five years ago an honor graduate of the univer sity of washington in 1923 he re ceived his master of science degree in electrical engineering from union college in 1928 he has lectured at the massachusetts institute of tech-i nology harvard yale and johns hopkins universities brooklyn polytechnic institute the university of texas and before numerous american and canadian electrical engineering institutes he is a member of the american institute of electrical engineers and tau beta pi and sigma xi l v bewley member of the lehigh staff who is deemed to have done most toward advancement of the interests of the university a sergeant in the 13th ma chine gun battalion during chi psi on pro illegal rushing the judiciary committee of the interfraternity council placed chi psi lodge on social probation for a one-month period commencing feb 8 this action was taken in en prof loyal v bewley head of the department of electrical engineer ing was named dean of the college of engineering by the board of trustees president martin d whit aker announced saturday a member of the faculty since 1940 bewley has served as sec retary of the lehigh engineer ing executive committee for the past two years before joining the lehigh staff he served as re search engineer of the general electric co for 17 years author of five textbooks bewley is chairman of the electrical engi ; neering division of the american society for engineering education , he will direct the annual meeting of that group june 14-18 at the uni versity of illinois while at ge he received the charles a coffin award in recog nition of outstanding contributions to the knowledge of lightning and traveling wave phenomena last year he was the recipient of the hillman award given annually to a william a editor during his seven semesters on the b & w he has also been editor of the freshman handbook and a reporter for the plainfield courier news the bethlehem globe-times and the univer sity public relations dept thomas h asson 54 this semester's financial manager and previously national advertising manager has been named business manager jerry friedenheim 54 and daniel s klein 54 will be managing edi tor and editorial director respectively friedenheim is news editoi this semester and was editor-in-chief last summer klein is editor this semester and was assistant managing editor other editorial positions will be filled by robert e balestier 56 news editor richard c wallis 55 assistant news editor and arthur j roth 56 sports editor posts on the business staff will be filled by albert n gardner 55 fi see editors page 6 < idc business committee fate decided tomorrow by arcadia ties concerned that any and all inn fractions of the ifc rushing rules will be regarded as a willful break in faith between member fraternif ties and the council they added in this case the violation was committed by one member of the fraternity but that in no way could serve as a basis for vindication because all member fraternities are responsible for the words and actions of its members the judiciary commit tee ruled the four freshmen mentioned in the citation received the minimum penalty that the council is empower ed to invoke they were deprived of the right to be rushed by or to pledge the guilty fraternity for the remainder of the freshman year this penalty is automatic however in cases of greater breach of the rules heavier penalties may be de cided upon by the judiciary com mittee see probation page 6 meerwarth ok returns here mon for exams ralph n meerwarth 54 arcadia president expects to return to le high monday it was learned from north perm hospital lansdale where he was released sunday intending to rest this week at the home of his uncle in phila delphia meerwarth will return to school for the first day of ex ams mai gross 54 saw the injured student over the weekend and de scribed him as looking in fine shape forcement of the rushing rules of the council which state that rushing will be permitted only during the period begin ning feb 12 and ending feb 25 rushing which is defined as the association of fraternity men with non-fraternity men in any form of entertainment . . .", was engaged in by the house at one of the local taverns a member of the judiciary com mittee was present at the tavern and witnessed one member of the house sitting and drinking with four freshmen under the interpretation of the rules which states specifically that association with freshmen in taverns is illegal the complaint was filed this case a landmark in ifc ac tion should serve as full and suffi cient warning to all member houses and freshmen that the council will act swiftly to prosecute any violat 1 ors of the regulations it must be remembered by all par arcadia will decide the fate of the new idc business committee tomor row night when it considers the idc's request for control of certain concessions directly concerning dor mitory men at its meeting last thursday night the arcadia concessions committee was unable to reach a decision on idc's application and referred the matter to its parent body concessions involved are laundry dry cleaning stores and houseparty flowers and favors interdormitory president robert ameling 54 had by executive order written to the concessions commit tee his request for control of these concessions his action came as a result of the formation of the new com mittee which was approved by idc at its meeting a week ago the committee which is approved on an interim basis until a definite organization and plan of operation are submitted to the interdormitory council is to have control of busi ness ventures directly concerning dormitory residents an important part of its immedi ate program is the regulation of con cessions through more effective control the committee hopes to pro vide more efficient concession serv ice other operations will include the purchase and operation of several washing machines to be placed in the dormitories immediate plans also call for in vestigation of the possibility of re ducing costs thus increasing profits of the stores through central buying other central buying plans involve the dry cleaning concessions if arcadia approves the plan nc present concessionaire would be affected until his stay at the univer sity is completed with this issue the brown and white ceases publication until feb 16 notices and copy for next issue will be accepted until sunday feb 14 next semester's b&w staff members are requir ed to report feb 10 at 7:30 p.m that yale has nothing on lehigh except perhaps 15 snowballers in jail was aptly and riotously demonstrated on the dravo steps note unsanded condition saturday note coward center retreating in face of
