prof behind crash car a total of 152,300 has been given to the lehigh alumni fund toward the 250,000 needed to meet the challenge gift of a similar amount for a new health center on the cam pus according to an announcement from stewart j cort chairman an anonymous donor offered to contribute up to 250,000 or any fraction of this sum which can be matched by alumni and friends to build equip and en dow a health center to replace the temporary army hospital which has been in use since 1946 the amount given so far compares with a total of 115,000 on this date last year the 1952-53 fund even tually reached 202,000 and was used for new equipment for the various departments another scholarship was made available to lehigh students be see 1,200 page 5 between dormitory men 2 to act as a means of financing improvements to provide expanded recreational facilities within the dormitories 3 to further more effective allo cation and supervision of income producing ventures within the dor mitory system since being appointed last month the committee has inves tigated the possible methods of organization it has also investi gated possible fields of opera tions and operations and recrea tional facilities which can be ob tained with any profits temporary chairman of the com mittee is william lindermann 54 and temporary secretary is danie klein 54 concessions plans of the commit tee will not affect any present co cessionaires if idc is given contrc of the concessions it asked for those now operating them will continue tc see ddc page 5 arcadian burgin fails to carry out pledges plans for the first step in follow ing donald halverson's advice for a better dormitory system will be pre sented to idc for its approval to night the council will be asked to endorse idc president bob ameling's appointment of 11 men to form an idc business committee to operate business ventures directly concerned with the welfare of the dormi tory residents the new committee would be an integral part of idc but eventually would be composed of men who are not members of the council ameling representing idc has written to don luce head of the arcadia concessions committee to ask for control of concessions di rectly affecting the dormitories if approved the committee would regulate these conces sions it would also purchase and operate washing machines in several dormitories these are the immediate operations plan ned others are long-range plans aims of the organization are three in number 1 to encourage more dormitory members to participate in dormitory affairs thus instilling a more cohe sive and cooperative relationship only eye witness to friday morn ing's accident in which a car driven by arcadia president ralph meer warth was in collision with a trailer truck on route 309 near montgom eryville were ironically a lehigh professor and his wife prof lyle w donaldson of the electrical engineering dept was driving between 600 to 900 feet behind the meerwarth ve hicle and was first on the scene i noticed the car — at that time i had no way of knowing who was in it — traveling at what i would con sider a normal rate of speed related the witness when the truck cut out from the right hand lane to cross the four lane highway apparently head ed for the diner across the way at the same time meerwarth apparent ly was trying to pass the truck in the left lane when he saw what was happen ing he attempted to swerve to the right but instead his hood went un der the right rear of the truck which sheared the roof almost completely off then the driver lost control of the car and it careened into a vacant lot he was thrown out donaldson said meerwarth still conscious was helped to the car and an ambulance was called ralph n meerwarth 54 president of arcadia was seriously injured friday morning when his automo bile collided with a truck on route 309 in montgomery township no charges were pressed the lake mohawk n.j busi ness major was reported in sat isfactory condition sunday by north penn hospital montgom eryville pa authorities thirty-seven stitches had to be taken in his face and the muscles and tendons in his left arm had to be repaired e spent a total of four hours on the operating table he was also reported to be suffering from shock meerwarth was on his way to philadelphia for a job interview when he collided with the right rear of a semi tractor trailer which was traveling in front of meerwarth in the right hand lane of the four-lane highway chief of montgomery town ship police d howard chap man reported that 122 feet of skidmarks were measured up to the point of impact and that the car was then hurled 70 feet into a vacant lot meerwarth was apparently thrown out of his 1950 cream ford two door sedan sometime while the car was plunging from the highway into the lot the front windshield was pushed back to the rear window the left door was sheared off and hurled on to the highway the steering wheel was bent toward the front seat the front of the roof was bent into the driver's seat and the left rear body of the car was also ripped off the truck owned by poteat company of hickory n.c and driven by jesse woodrow wil son 36 of newton n.c was in the right lane about to take a left turn into the 202 diner across the highway the truck would have had to cross the highway between red flags see meerwarth page 6 this is the fifth article in a series on arcadians their platforms and their efforts to carry them out arcadia needs to investigate the overcrowded dorms lehigh needs the adoption of a definite mascot we need more and better arcadia publicity that's what william burgin maintained in know your candidates last february has he initiated any of the reforms he says were needed from the record one is forced to conclude that he has done nothing no investigation of overcrowded dorms was ever asked by burgin once he was elected nothing was ever done about the adoption of a mascot publicity has been improved however the improvement has come as a direct result of the ideas advanced by the publicity committee of which burgin is not a member burgin was a member of the freshman orientation committee which did an excellent job he is a member of the controversial stu dent club finance committee scfc has been embroiled in many disputes this year they started with the committee's refusal to grant funds to music organizations because of lack of a financial statement on the sale of lehigh records then came the complaints about cuts in allocations most vociferous was wlrn other committee members have said that burgin's work on the commit see burgin page 5 ¦ gershwin music attracts 2,400 by jerry friedenheim george gershwin's music was brought back to life for a short in terlude friday night as 2400 enthu siastic spectators filled grace hall to its largest capacity in three years technically the show fell flat however the soloists two sing ers and a pianist reflected the lively and tuneful music that has made gershwin the top composer of the nation with robert zeller conducting the 30-piece orchestra the gershwin festival opened with an overture consisting of a medley of show tunes among these were swanee of thee i sing and wintergreen for president the choice of songs in the overture easily put the audi ence in a warm mood for the show mario braggiotti french pianist then took the
