this is another story in a ser ies on lehigh university gradu ates about whom we feel the students should know more he's twice the steel man i am or ever will be spoke charles m schwab of eugene gifford grace 99 many people smiled knowingly then but they do not smile now when they examine the progress re corded by the bethlehem steel cor poration under grace's leadership as president and now chair man of the second largest steel producing company in the world and the world's largest ship building organization grace has won the accolades of individuals and organizations the world over he received the coveted bessemer gold medal in 1942 from the british iron and steel institute which ac claimed him the acknowledged leader of the steel industry in america he also has received the gary award from the american iron and steel institute it is impossible to study the story of grace's life and his rise and not be impressed with the consistency of it the son of a ship captain turned storekeeper grace spent his earlier life in a rural com munity in cape may county n.j where his family had lived by jim picton ed note last february candidates for arcadia made many prom ises to student voters many of them were mere words designed to get votes others those elected have sincerely worked to fulfill six school months have passed since the present student govern ment was inaugurated last march the brown and white believes that now is the time to inform the student body just what the 15 members have done to live up to their campaign promises in a series beginning today the platform and effort by each arca dian to effect his promises will be discussed president ralph meerwarth listed two points in his platform one was a humor magazine while the other was a student purchase card system i feel strongly that no arcadia candidate once elected can fulfill five or six promised issues i believe that concentrating all my time and energy on the above two issues is of absolute necessity to do a thorough job if i am elected to arcadia said meerwarth in know your candidates a booklet about the candidates issued shortly be fore the election meerwarth was subsequently elected president of the organization and his two projects have fallen by the wayside after investigation by gayle williams indicated that local merchants did not wish to cooperate in the purchase card plan arcadia voted to drop the idea the merchants felt that publicity they received would be un fair to other storekeepers in the city williams reported two years ago a similar plan under the sponsorship of the national student association to which lehigh belonged at the time was put into operation here but it was discontinued at the end of the year i believe that through my experience as business manager of this year's 1953 epitome and a member of the brown and white staff i will be able to meet many obstacles facing such a project meerwarth said of a humor magazine in know your candidates he and another humor magazine enthusiast jack fox became members of the board of publications yet the board has not been presented with any plan for starting such a magazine apparently the idea has been for gotten evidently further investigation proved to meerwarth and fox that the obstacles were too great to surmount those obstacles include lack of subscribers lack of advertisers lack of talent and an inclination to be too smutty to please the administration others have tried to overcome these difficultes they failed meerwarth failed too next ed dussinger 77-year-old executive the com pany is my life says grace i have no side interests of a business na ture i keep active and busy and i keep just as well informed as i did 20 or 30 years ago grace has been as active and gen erous an alumnus of lehigh as he was a prolific undergraduate he has been chairman of the board of trustees of lehigh for many years at the cornerstone laying ceremon ies for grace hall which was one of his many generous gifts to the uni versity he related two of the hap piest events of his college days they were being chosen va ledictorian of his class and on that same commencement day knocking a grand slam home run against a hapless lafayette nine which lost 16 to 4 i think those two examples sort of emphasize to me what i have tried to give lehigh in this build ing grace captained lehigh's baseball team during his junior and senior years while on a southern tour with the team he hit a home run against the boston braves they offered him a handsome contract which he re gretfully declined in favor of beth lehem he still keeps actively inter ested in athletics however he has shot his age on the golf course since he was 67 the first things i read in the newspapers are the baseball see grace page 12 since colonial days he entered lehigh after a year at pennington prep as a major in e.e and graduated in 1899 valedic torian of his class he joined the bethlehem steel corporation upon graduation and rose from crane operator to presi dent of the company by the age of 36 a span of less than 14 years today as chairman of beth lehem steel receiving one of the largest salaries in the u.s and the acclaimed leader of the steel industry grace might very well rest on his laurels but such is not the case for this eugene g grace drown parking reverts to old permit system lu bethlehem pa soph ball plans bubbling prize friday december 4 1953 vol 65 no 18 seniors approve gift grievances cadia if it is fulfilling its constitu tional right of being the supreme student instrument for securing self government on the campus the committee will include three arcadians one of whom shall be chairman and two students not members of arcadia band concert 4 p.m sunday two goldman band arrangements will be featured as part of the brown and white concert band's initial performance of the 1953-54 season in packard auditorium at 4 p.m sunday the concert will be part of the music department's sunday re cital series and is open to the public there will be no admis sion charge in compiling the seven-number program prof william h schempf the band's director has included four numbers relating to the com ing christmas season and a suite written especially for military band by gustav hoist a contemporary english composer the program will begin with the playing of amparito roca a span ish march written for band by jaime texidor the second suite in f opus 28 no 2 the second of two such compositions for band by hoist will follow the suite is in four movements march song song of the blacksmith and fantasia see band page 3 the office of building and grounds will continue to maintain control of the parking in the drown hall park ing lot according to action taken by arcadia wednesday night besides naming that office as the agency for the issuance of permanent parking permits the arcadians established a tran sient parking permit system between the hours of 8 a.m to 4 p.m james gottling 54 chairman of the arcadia campus committee who introduced the bill said that his committee felt it the will of the stu dent body that the past system of permanent parking permits be con tinued he said transient parking permits should be issued to enable those stu dents having business in drown hall to park for the limited time without being subject to the normal univer sity regulation governing parking on campus wednesday night's action cli maxed two weeks of discussion of the merits of a new parking plan for drown hall which as originally introduced would have prohibited parking in the lot during school hours except for cars bearing approved ar cadia placards cars bearing i such placards would have been limited to one hour parking arcadia also decided to organize a five-man committee to investigate the actual powers and duties of ar cadia arcadia committees and ar cadia members sitting and voting on student-faculty committees the purpose of the motion as expressed by elliott barnett 54 who intro duced the motion is to inform ar the class plaque the insurance plan gift and a potential list of griev ances were approved at last week's senior class meeting in packard au ditorium more than 150 members of the class of 54 met at the special meet ing held last tuesday afternoon and all except 25 who abstained voted for the class insurance plan which may net the university 100 000 in 20 years if enough graduating men are pledged the plan has been in use by every senior class since 1938 and has total ed close to one million dollars the vote had been postponed be cause of a motion which asked that the gift plan be delayed until the administration answered the griev ances of the class against the dean's office once the plan was passed these grievances were brought before the assemblage a list of grievances had been anonymously submitted for approval of the class it was decided that the list as a whole be accepted and each individual point would be voted on separately it was also decided that copies should be sent to the board of trustees president and vice president of the university president phil newman pointed out we are showing as a group that we disagree with some of the tactics one member of the class then asked to have this final list pub lished in the alumni bulletin a motion was then passed which call ed for the latter to be mimeograph ed and sent to the alumni if it could not be published in the bulletin of the seven grievances listed on the petition six were passed these six will be taken up by a commit tee which will investigate and re-r word them additions may be made the six grievances in their see seniors page 8 m & c presents devil's disciple the mustard and cheese dramatic club opens its 69th year with george bernard shaw's the devil's disci ple tonight and tomorrow night in broughal jr high school curtain time is 8 tonight and 7:30 tomorrow lehigh students will be admitted free with id cards and tickets will be avail able at the door time was set at 7:30 saturday to allow couples to attend both the play and the snowßall the play lasts about two hours shaw wrote the play in 1896 and it had its first production in new york city with richard mansfield starring as dick dudgeon richard grant 54 president of mustard and cheese will create the role for this produc tion three years ago maurice ev ans starred in a revival of the play under margaret webster's direction kenneth verostick 53 secre tary of mustard and cheese plays gentlemanly johnny burgoyne and john archibald 54 plays major swindon john thompson 57 a newcomer to mustard and cheese enacts the role of the rev andersen and see m&c page 4 champagne will flow in grace hall tomorrow night while the 1953 snow ball dance is held between 10 p.m and 1 a.m a bottle of the bub bly stuff will be given away to the lucky couple which is closest to a picked spot on the dance floor when the music stops during the spot dance this particular dance will be announced beforehand matt gillespie and his orches tra will return to grace hall for the third straight year in what is fast becoming a tradition gil lespie and the snow ball are be coming synonomous with one word — excellent during intermission entertain ment will be provided by the pianq playing of irv chereshore 57 this talented freshman who also has his own combo plays with a style com parable to that of george shearing tickets for the dance will be on sale tomorrow morning in christ mas-saucon hall and tomorrowi night at the door they have been sold in the dormitories and fraterni-t ties during the week sponsored annually by the sophomore class the dance will be chaperoned by rev and mrs raymond fuessle and mr and mrs john haight rev fuessle is the new lehigh chaplain while mr haight is an instruct or of history the informal dance will have a decoration scheme of blue and white couples will enter grace hall through the door of a huge igloo and will
