lu bethlehem pa volume 65 — number 16 seniors delay gift action as result of grievances friday nov 20 1953 lehigh and lafayette will clash for the 89th time on the taylor stadium gridiron at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon the traditional battle between the two schools is the longest consecutive gridiron rivalry in the nation and one of the nation's oldest rivalries a crowd of 16,000 is expected in renovated taylor stadium to wit ness the season's finale for both clubs lehigh will be seeking to win four games in four consecutive seasons from lafayette for the first time in its history the engineers have beaten the leopards five straight times but that was when the teams played two or three times a season since the inception of the series in 1884 we have won 30 while losing 55 to the leopards three of the games have ended in ties both teams come into the traditional fracas with identical records of 4-4 both teams records against mutual opponents are almost identical the only difference being that lehigh beat muhlenberg while lafayette lost to the mules lehigh who has been doing most of their gaining through the air is expected to continue that practice against lafayette with junior quarter tom gloede doing the pitching la fayette has a heavy line which has given up only 150 yards per game the games that the leopards have lost came through poor pass defense as far as defense is concerned the main objective of the brown and white will be to stop a strong maroon running attack which leads the eastern collegi ate athletic association with an average of 256 yards per game the engineers will be at full strength except for bob miles who has a foot injury that has kept him bulletin 16,000 expected to witness leopard game on taylor grid of the 32 selected from lehigh's senior class for who's who in american colleges and universities 25 are shown above from left to right they are — front row james gottling george ziminsky daniel klein martin edelman elliot barnett robert ameling and edward dussinger second row george lemmon kenneth stahl wallace butler ralph meerwarth wilson stout peter barba malvern gross william haase and gerald friedenheim 111 third group for who's who lafayette's bonfire was set off by a group of six lehigh men at approximately 4:30 a.m yester day a spokesman for the four freshmen and two upperclass men who turned the trick said that no guards were found at the fire molotov cocktails gasoline in jars were placed in the wood pile and ignited the spokesman said that from a distant ridge the blaze look ed very nice higher than the bethlehem steel furnaces voting by the senior class on the class gift for the university was postponed until a meeting tuesday as the result of numerous griev ances most of which referred to tactics of the dean's office after reports by university treasurer elmer w glick and charles zug 26 secretary of the class gift committee since 1938 jack barnett a member of the graduating class proposed that before the senior class votes upon the gift plan the senior officers should consult with the administration with the purpose of supplying the senior class with the answers to the follow ing questions 1 is the administration aware of the resentment prevalent among the student body concerning the tactics employed by the dean's office 2 if so does the administration approve of the methods the motion was defeated 30-17 mainly because those opposed to the motion disapproved of at tempting to hold an ax over the administration persons who had voted the mo tion down then suggested that the * class approve the class gift plan and then have officers representing the class meet with members of the ad ministration and consider the ques tions as to the dean's office a suggestion that dean of stu dents wray h congdon and other high officials of the administration be asked to speak before a gathering ' see senior page 3 out of action in recent games joe kryla speedy halfback will not be able to start because of a shoulder injury but he is expected to see spot action lehigh's line-up will be the same see lu meets page 8 pajama d frosh march to mcw the pajama parade which will be held tonight after the bonfire was the main discussion of the freshman cabinet meeting last monday night frosh paraders will meet in grace hall and will then follow the band across the new st see frosh page 6 c hayes had insisted that i see no need for more than 10 spaces when asked how he arrived at the limit of 10 spaces dean hayes said that the most student cars he ever saw outside of drown hall was five so he simply doubled that earlier when asked if there was a parking problem gottling replied the problem is that any student parking on the low er campus is illegal when it was pointed out that if this were true his plan is illegal he said i can't answer that one dean hayes claimed that litzen berger agreed to let the committee take over the job the chief com plaint he said was the slipshod manner in which the job had been done in the past he claimed that the dean's office see parking page 6 james gottling 54 chairman of the arcadia campus committee will recommend to his committee that the one-hour limit on parking out side drown hall be dropped from his original proposal gottling's statement came as a result of the open meeting held tuesday to which all interested parties were invited gottling was the only committee mem ber present as was said in the meeting a one-hour parking limit wouldn't make sense because it would be im possible for a person to transact all his business within that period of time he asserted any recommendation on the limit of 10 spaces would hinge on a con ference with superintendent of buildings and grounds andrew w litzenberger gottling continued at the meeting dean byron bond tours world tomorrow lu discharges 1 soph 2 frosh for drinks etc three students have been requir ed to withdraw from the university r for disciplinary reasons according to dean wray h congdon chairman of the university committee on i discipline one of the students a sopho more was sent before the com mittee in connection with his conduct at the lehigh-buffalo game he was required to withdraw and was assessed five disciplinary de merits for drunkenness disorderly conduct falsification of testimony to ' the committee and violation of uni versity regulations regarding posses sion and use of alcoholic beverages on university property the other two students have been withdrawn from the university one * immediately and one for the 1954 spring semester for the sale of con traband merchandises of an illicit ' nature not permitted in the grant of the original permission for a con see discipline page 6 thirty-two seniors have been se lected for who's who in american colleges and universities 1954 it was announced today by thomas nitsche 54 head of the who's who committee robert ameling thomas as son peter barba elliot barnett wallace butler john cable richard davis edward dus singer martin edelman gerard friedenheim james gottling malvern gross thomas gunn william haase and john hen derson were picked also in the group are george hopkins daniel klein george lem mon alvin lewis donald luce hans dreher ronald madison ralph meerwarth robert miller philip newman edwin scheetz bertram schweigaard-olsen donald schindel kenneth stahl wilson stout frank young and george zi minsky selections were made by members of the junior class who have excel lent opportunities to view lehigh activities and faculty members ac cording to nitsche leadership and participation in extra-curricular and academic activ ities citizenship and service to the school excellence and sincerity in scholarship and promise of future usefulness to business and society were the criteria of selections who's who is a publication rep resenting approximately 630 colleges throughout the united states by dick wallis the 90-piece brown and white band will tour the world tomorrow afternoon via music and marching in a half-time show based on trav el the musicians will transport lafayette game spectators to the four corners of the earth and in clude a few surprises along the way during pre-game ceremonies the marching men of lehigh will salute briefly the visiting leopards and the returning old grads strains of auld lang syne will ring out over tay lor stadium as the band spells out grads the half-time show will be slight ly reminiscent in part of the recenif houseparty as the band takes us on a tour of the world we will visit such distant places as england and the london bridge paris and the eiffel tower ireland and her tra ditional shamrock india and a snake charmer and sunny italy and her music the musicians will conclude the show with an unusual and enter taining salute to our alma mater this week's show was con ceived by a committee of bands men appointed by the student director clinton schmeig jr the men thought up the ideas last week and don kirkpatrick and dick wallis worked out the final details of formation with the exception of the open ing march and the school songs al of the music in the show is new tc the band the show numbers were ordered by prof william h schempf faculty director monday and arrived at grace hall in time for the wednesday rehearsal the arrangement of eh cumpari was done
