fraternities open their doors to housepartying couples a global tour can be taken by just traveling to some of the houses or if you are more in clined toward visiting with fel low countrymen as they appear now or in history books the parties should satisfy your ima gination switzerland paris bermuda cai ro rome and arabia will be head lined at alpha tau omega pi kap pa alpha theta kappa phi alpha chi rho kappa alpha and delta upsilon respectively theta xi will sum up the tour with a cosmopoli tan theme from american history beta theta phi will present an indian party while delta chi will bring back ancestors the gold rush days will be relived by delta tau delta the westerns will be brought back by tau delta phi and phi gamma delta that prohibition did exist will be accentuated by sigma alpha mv and the speakeasy by delta phi this was also the period where gangsters reached their prime and theta delta chi is fea turing a hood party that hallowe'en is upon us will be emphasized by sigma phi epsilon and chi phi is not forgetting the see parties page 4 delta phi boasts location good average & bruce modern america's man of mu sic stan kenton and 20 of the world's most outstanding instrumen talists will be featured friday eve ning at the moulin rouge house party formal dance in grace hall from 10 p.m to 2 a.m kenton will provide music for the main floor prom dancers while george sommer and his orchestra will perform for top floor party go ers kenton for four consecutive years winner of down beat magazine's popularity poll as leader of the nation's number one orchestra returns to the south mountain campus after a very successful visit at the fall houseparty in 1950 kenton has been one of the most influential figures in the world of jazz since the orchestra was orga nized over a decade ago even more surprising is the fact that kenton has now delved into the strictly dance music barrel and come up with many old favorite dance melo dies in an abrupt contrast to his modern innovations in jazz kenton has shown a new dream-like quality of music without losing the old stan the man touch sommer and his orchestra are party for the second time in the also back to a lehigh house spring of 1952 sommer filled in at houseparty after the tragic death of bob shebley left the dance committee with only one band friday night sommer will intro duce his latest vocal find miss louise lane who will provide the houseparty bands touch of femi ninity to the occasion at midnight the fall houseparty queen of 1954 will be crowned after being chosen from the 12 most beau tiful girls at the dance the court of 12 will be chosen by roaming red sashed judges during the earlier part of the evening the queen will be driven on the field at the half time in the lehigh bucknell football game saturday to throw out the football to lehigh capt tom gunn this is the first year the queen has had such an ad ditional royal duty to perform moulin rouge the parisienne nightclub of yesteryear will form the backdrop for the see jazz page 4 by bill arnold no one can be great all the time but with constant effort he can beat the law of averages although he doesn't claim to be a philosopher stan kenton was responsible for the above quotation and it's the code by which he lives in little over a decade he has grown from ob scurity in music to the point where the entire business and followers of modern music look to him to set the pace he spent many hours of his early life arguing with his mother who being a piano teacher was trying to convince him that he should study music eventually she made him understand that he was meant for music but it was not until after a siege of saxophone trumpet and even banjo that he finally reverted to the piano stan graduated from high school in 1930 during the depression he was a little unhappy that his family couldn't afford to send him to a uni versity to study music the following years kenton spent playing in beer joints in california having the price of dinner one day wondering what would happen the next in 1941 after being assistant musi cal director at earl carroll's theater restaurant he organized his own band composed of musicians who like himself felt the need for music to rise from its stagnant state at that time the next four months were spent in balboa calif and during this time word spread like wildfire all over southern california about his drastically different type of music soon the whole nation began to un derstand more about progressive jazz in 1946 look magazine pre dicted kenton's band would be the year's greatest it was right as the band walked off with ev ery popularity poll and ran up high grosses when other bands complained of bad business kenton set up a tremendous pace see adds page 5 two lehigh students who were evicted from the lehigh-buffalo foot ball game at taylor stadium oct 10 for their drunken conduct have been suspended from college effective immediately according to dean wray h congdon chairman of the university committee on discipline the brown and white learned that the two students were francis schwerin and bob gschwind dean congdon explained that those students caught attempting to carry alcoholic beverages into the games will be reported to gen percy l sadler director of athletics he further emphasized that the action taken against the two students is to serve as a precedent for cases involving future misconduct at football games in explaining the position of the committee on discipline dean congdon " gave the following statement to the brown and white the university committee on dis cipline took action in the cases of two lehigh students who were in volved in drinking at the lehigh buffalo football game in taylor sta dium saturday oct 10 the charges against these students are drunken ness disorderly conduct and viola tion of university regulations as to possessing and using alcoholic bev erages on university property the actions taken were under the following university regula tions which are published and made available to all students each semester at registration to refresh the memories of all stu dents so that we can avoid any more such unfortunate incidents i repeat the regulations here with a student who at any time con ducts himself in a manner unbe coming to a gentleman contrary to the accepted codes of decency or laws of good citizenship or who by his speech or actions brings the good name of lehigh university into dis repute or is disobedient to the di rections authority or regulations of members of the university staff un der whose jurisdiction the student may be will be subject to disciplin ary action in accordance with the seriousness of the offense the regulations of the univer sity applicable to alcoholic bev erages will be strictly adhered to by all students these can be summarized as a complete ban on possession or use of alcoholic beverages on university property in student's residence halls fraternities or rooms at any time except for group social affairs when the appropriate petition has been submitted well in advance and permission has been officially under these regulations the uni versity committee on discipline took action to suspend these two students from college immediately with loss of all credits for the cur rent semester one until february 1954 and with the assessment of five disciplinary demerits and one until september 1954 and with assessment of six disciplinary demerits b w apologizes for columnist's error on lh the brown and white wishes to apologize publicly to lamberton hall for a columnist's statement last friday oct 23 that the soccer team's bout with food poisoning was attributed to food obtained in lamberton hall this is definitely not true and we are sorry for having pub lished the statement without checking information given to us in what the writer thought was good faith actually the soccer players did not become ill until after a game had been played at gettysburg be fore then several meals were eaten elsewhere arcadia president ralph meerwarth 54 and william malkames president of the muhlenberg student council are shown signing the annual peace pact between the two schools thursday looking on are left to right ronald schlittler president of the junior class at muhlenberg buell miller 55 arcadia secretary dan klein 54 brown and white editor-in-chief and daniel hosage vice president of the muhlenberg student council not shown is robert malkames editor of the muhlenberg weekly who was also present at the signing the pact is designed to prevent vandalism on the two campuses be for the football game nov 7 at taylor stadium it provides a mini mum penalty of payment of damages and also calls for today delta phi winner of the ifc scholastic im provement cup last fall delta phi has climbed high upon the fraternity ladder of scholastic success it won the cup with an average of 2.330 which placed it sixth among frater nities while last spring it had an av erage of 2.411 which placed it fourth in the same group with an excellent location just off campus at 229 warren square delta phi has a house with a living capacity of 2 and a dining capacity of 30 there are 17 brothers and one pledge t with all but two members living in the house among the six seniors two juniors and 10 sophomores there are 13 engi neers four business men and one arts man there are four dorm rooms and eight study rooms in the double house which is actually a two-fami ly house it can be partitioned off which makes it an especially nice place for houseparty dates to stay delta phi's first house in bethle hem was at a distant location on delaware aye the second was on the corner of delaware aye and mohican
