math of lafayette game the brown and white squad hopes to repeat last year's win over the scarlet team the new yorkers continue to ignore lehigh contract in navy negotiations the star center forward is chosen captain for next year's eleven by popular choice final count 43 - 13 extensive plans afoot many speeches feature many veterans back the brown and white five is outplayed in latter half weinstein plays well coach lukens has excellent veteran material back in all events except the sprints the mix-up resulting from col gate making an agreement with the naval academy for a football game on november 3rd 1923 the date on which they are scheduled by a previous agreement to play lehigh will soon be straightened out ne gotiations have been going on for the past few days with carnegie tech for the date being left vacant by colgate's move an agreement has been sent to pittsburgh and a reply is expected any day now ; the terms specify a return game at the taylor stadium here in 1924 continued on page four the cause of the present mix-up seems to be unknown but was un doubtedly planned some time ago harlow telling his men between halves of the game played at bing hamton last fall that it would be the regular meeting of the rail road society will be held this even ing at 8 o'clock in the physics building mr h b gardner of the locomotive stoker co will be the speaker the lecture will be illustrated with slides his topic is stokers and firing his com pany was the first one in the united states to build a successful over feed stoker but to-day 4,800 of their stokers are used on the 76 railroads of the country recently on the illinois central railroad an engine equipped with their stoker was operated in road service four days handling six sep arate full tonnage trains and cover ing a total of 320 miles without hav ing the fire cleaned or any delay due to steam trouble everyone interested is invited to attend this instructive lecture plans progressing on new epitome quintet to meet gettysburg five on monday night all lehigh gathered in the commons to stage a celebration unique in the history of the university it was not to commemorate a great victory but to honor a team which had upheld to the nth degree one of the great le high traditions the tradition of a fighting team no matter what the odds the entire football squad were guests at the banquet and sat in lehigh soccer team was elected captain of next year's team at a meeting of the letter men held monday afternoon fernan dez for two seasons has enjoyed the distinction of being the leading goal scorer in the pennsylvania state in tercollegiate soccer league after consideration of the two assistant managers by a special meeting of the athletic committee c m alford 24 has been appoint ed manager of the soccer team for next season while the general at titude of both men during the sea son was of great importance it is believed that the final decision was based on the relative scholastic standing of the candidates as soon as the meetings of the inter collegiate soccer league and the pennsylvania soccer league have taken place the schedule for next season will be made up that lehigh intends to enlarge in soccer activities is apparent by the intention announced of consid ering the advisability of joining the intercollegiate soccer league which at present includes such teams as princeton yale harvard cornell haverford and pennsylvania this aspiration is influenced by the ex cellent showing made by the soccer team in the last two seasons hav ing won the title in the state league in the season recently closed more particular however is the excellent showing made against princeton the intercollegiate champions losing by a score of 1 to 0 and which indi cated that the lehigh team of the past season places the merit of the team on an equal plane with those of the national body a meeting of the intercollegiate soccer league will be held in new york on saturday of this week and it is understood that r mercur 23 captain for the past season and coach j h carpenter will attend and present a petition for admis sion into the organization if ac cepted lehigh will also retain its membership in the pennsylvania state league it is felt that with a large squad a representative elev en could be developed to compete as a second team in the state organ ization haverford and perm are at the present time entered in both leagues a meeting of the pennsyl vania state league will be held in philadelphia next week the lehigb swimming team has put the final finishing touches on its workouts and is ready to make a strong bid for the tank honors on saturday when they will meet the powerful rutgers aggregation at new brunswick the try-outs which will probably be held friday will determine the men who will take the rutgers trip the rutgers meet will draw par ticular attention this year not only from the point of our keen rivalry with this college but also because it is one of the hardest competi tions on the brown and white's schedule it will be remembered that the lehigh swimmers after a hard struggle took the new bruns wick team into camp last year which will further make for a hard er-contested struggle on saturday the rutgers team of last year is still intact and should be consider ably strengthened by their hard 1 and steady practice giebel captain for the second year will probably represent rut gers in the 50-yard 100-yard and relay races harmon's opponent of last year ross is back again and out for revenge in the 220 yard race galbraith of rutgers is ex pected to make a strong bid for the diving honors while sparks and yon standing will plunge against their respective lehigh opponents giebel ross rossetti and enan der will no doubt make up the rut gers relay team the try-outs for the lehigh team have not been made to date but an estimate has been made as to what men will make the trip from the three men regad un derwood and delong two will be picked for the plunge astarita and childs will represent lehigh in the diving end of the program in the relay race four men will be picked from the following har mon schaffer saxton vurnham huggins atwood and freeman the entire lehigh team is in the best of condition and good 1 results are to be looked for in the meet on saturday quick will swim the back stroke the men who show up best in the try-outs for relay positions will be placed in the various sprint events it must be admitted however that the veteran team put out by the new brunswick collegians is a slight favorite over lehigh's gregation the boys from gettys burg are coming here with the pros pects of defeating the strong brown and white quintet but the hard grind that baldwin has put his men through and the splendid fight his men steadily and the faults that have been noticed in the previous games are now reduced to such an extent that the speedy formations shown in the former games will again be used the regular line up will be : lingle f ; snyder f ; lees c ; henschen g ; hart ung g baldwin also has some very prom ising substitutes for his team the most reliable men are weinstein hess springsteen titus and har per as has been seen in former games the line-up has been seeded with these second-string men with out changing the effectiveness of the attack all the features com bined against the five dribblers from gettysburg promise to be very in teresting and the team should have the support of every man to help them along notice wrestling try-outs to be completed today lehigh's courtmen journeyed to west point on wednesday evening and met the fast army quintet los ing to the tune of 43 to 13 this was the army's sixth straight vic tory having defeated trinity st john's columbia and delaware although the army's team is al most entirely a new one it has been steam roll ing its opponents reg ularly the military boys proved to be an exceptionally fast team they displayed unusually eleven work un der the basket keeping the pace around the brown and white's end of the floor a good part of the game whirlwind passing also was a feature of the army's play time after time roosma or vichules would receive a lightning-like throw from one of the guards and settle it into the goal before the lehigh men knew the ball was in motion roosma starred at foul shooting putting in 15 out of 19 foul goals / lehigh was able to cage but three goals during the entire game getting one in the first half and two more near the end of the game lehigh's defense was rather weak against the fast army players and they were not able to gain posses sion of the ball often enough nev ertheless the brown and white fought a bard game and every point the west pointers made they earned lehigh started the game strong but were able to put in but one basket the first half the ball see sawed back and forth continually but when the brown and white players had the ball they seemed unable to put it in the goal the first half ended with the army in the lead 21 to 8 during the first part of the second half the lehigh team was at its worst of the game the army seemed to be able to put in baskets at will for a time but ronsseau professor gauss de livered his address before some for ty or more members of the arts and science club plus about a dbzen members of the faculty the club dispensed with the regular routine meeting and all unnecessary and time-consuming items being strick en from the program and the entire evening given over to mr gauss he touched upon only one phase of ronsseau's work or what he termed as the positive side of rons seau he covered rather minutely upon his childhood and youth tell ing of his birth in geneva switzer land and of his life there until the age of sixteen he left geneva at that age and wandered about the country and in fact his whole life was passed continually moving from place to place besides this anr other character of his life up to the age of 38 was his entire inaptitude in almost every line of endeavor he undertook at this time there came a decided change in bis life brought about by his attempt to answer the question have arts and science contributed to improve morals this question was the theme of his first discourse and in fact the cen tral idea of bis later ones after bis lecture professor gauss asked for questions from the audi ence upon any phase of ronsseau a number of questions were asked and answered one in particular in regard to the connection between ronsseau s work and our declara tion of independence professor gauss said that theire is in our declaration of independence un doubted influence from the works of ronsseau going on to show ins tances and reasons why this connec tion exists the wrestling try-outs for the coming meet with princeton start ed yesterday and will be continued to-day coach sheridan asks all the wrestlers to be out in order that the try-outs may be finished friday ev ening however if it is
