list of games arranged for 1923 brown and white to meet strong cadet courtmen at west point tomorrow combined musical organizations to appear at allentown col lege on friday evening seventeen additional matches to be fired before close of season early in april students may attend score 45-44 hard game expected award soccer letters university of toronto courtmen come from behind to win on friday night score 35-32 small l is given team which won pennsylvania state league championship cedar crest college in allentown will be the scene of the first appear ance of the combined musical clubs since the christmas holidays on fri day evening the concert is being arranged for by the sophomore class of cedar crest as a benefit and outsiders will be admitted upon payment of a nominal fee early in december the clubs ap peared at bishopthorpe manor the w r ell-known local school for girls and made a decided hit since then some new specialties have been re hearsed and several innovations will be seen for the first time at the coming concert a high standard is being maintained and the clubs have worked hard to perfect a pro gram which is of a high class but worthwhile and amusing manager h t litke 24 is mak } ing tentative arrangements for the i proposed trip to washington and several other cities during the eas [ ter holidays the clubs will appear in bethlehem at the grand theatre iox a three-day engagement during : the latter part of february the following is the program continued on page four senior class ballots are needed at once the first college meeting of the new year was held friday morning in packer hall when the student body voted for the assistant mana gers of football the two men win ning these honors were a c dv bois 25 and f p spalding 25 after the ballot was taken a few i:np o r t an t announcements were made one by j a todd 23 chair man of the football banquet com mittee who urged every student to try and be present at the banquet which was so successfully held last evening a w hicks 23 president of the arcadia requested that any student who had taken any of the traffic signs red lanterns and other police department equipment from the streets of the city to return such material to either the university policemam or to hicks himself and he shall see that the articles are re turned to the proper authorities he also urged the students to re frain from committing such acts in the future after several minor an nouncements were made the meet ing was adjourned plans were discussed for the football testimonial banquet which took place last evening and an earnest appeal was made for under graduate support in so far as it was possible fraternities were ask ed to close their tables on that ev ening the cadet courtmen will furnish the stiffest opposition yet encoun tered when the brown and white five travels to west point to-mor row in spite of the fact that the army has almost an entirely new team the military boys have been romping through their schedule in fine shape and are confident of add ing another victory at the expense of lehigh the army five is fast covers the court well and has a habit of keep ing the ball dangerously near an op ponent's basket since the return from swarthmore coach baldwin has given the squad intensive prac tice and has the men in excellent condition it is not probable that there will be any changes in the le high line-up the army basketeers have play ed thus far trinity st john's col umbia and delaware they over whelmingly defeated delaware last friday to the tune of 37 to 11 vi chules and roosma are their stars at field goals while roosma does the foul shooting the lehigh defeat of swarth more on the same date is not ade quately described by the 45 to 44 score the brown and organi zation have not yet been received the individual firing in the match on friday was not up to par due to the lay-off over the holidays however the members of the team are practicing daily and will soon be back in their old form tankmen preparing for rutgers swim okeson will lead football referees the senior class book commit tee has started to compile the ma terial on hand for the senior sec tion of the 1924 epitome there have been a number of ballots turn ed in already and all photographs and ballots must be in by wednes day january 10th at this time also a check for 13.00 to cover the charges of inserting the individual pictures and write-ups must be in the hand's of the committee all photographs must be in on the above date but any not taken by the mc caa studio should be turned in now those who have not had their photographs taken should make arrangements with mr mc caa at once the photographs may be left at the mccaa studio and the committee will get them there the committee also wants a snap-shot of every member of the class these can be given to e h snyder 23 at the phi delta theta house j w gardy 23 chairman of senior class book committee has called a meeting of the commit tee to be held thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the alpha chi rho house at this time the section will be arranged and the detail work carried out the ballots which have been turned in to date have been done according to the directions of the committee and it is hoped that the rest of the class will make out their ballots as carefully the com mittee hopes to put out a very good book but their success depends largely on the co-operation of the class the 1924 epitome board is hard at work on the annual and by all accounts a precedent should be es tablished this year in that it is ex pected the book will appear on time a copy of the book is in cludedl in the senior assessment and will be delivered when the epitome is published at a meeting of the football offi cials of the eastern area of the uni ted states held im new york city during the past week the associa tion of football officials of the eastern district was formed in the past a certain amount of dis satisfaction has been expressed con cerning officials who made accurate but perhaps unpopular decisions this organization bands together the men who om the field control our gridiron battles and will prevent unfair treatment of any of their number one of the leading spirits in bringing about the conference w r okeson 96 of lehigh universi ty and at present alumni secretary was elected president okey has always been a confirmed devotee of the gridiron game not only as a member of lehigb's controlling board but also as an active referee himself he is generally consider ed to be one of the most accurate and skilful arbiters at present ref ereeing in the eastern area other officers elected were w c crowell of swarthmore vice-pres ident e thorp of de la salle secretary and treasurer the pur pose of the organization is to pro mote fair play and good sportsman ship and to co-operate with the na tional collegiate athletic associa tion the intercollegiate football rules committee and the central board of officials after being in the lead twice the brown and white five was finally nosed out by the strong university of toronto team the intercollegi ate champions of canada last fri day evening the final score was 35 to 32 it was a fast and ex citing game from the opening whis tle to the last second of play the outcome was in doubt while there was much brilliant playing in spots the game as a whole was character istically a season opener the lehigh dribblers came through with a well-deserved win over swarthmore last saturday 45 to 44 the game was a nip and tuck affair taking two extra peri ods to decide the winner incident ally this is the first basketball game won by a le'high team away from home in three years toronto game the toronto team presented a wonderful exhibition of teamwork the aggregation had worked to gether for several years and had their passing down to a fine point capt duffill the canadian team's guard was in a large measure re sponsible for his team's victory along with mclean an accurate and accurate shooting forward but when in the second half le high had piled up a number of points in excess of toronto's he was put back into the game and seemed to instill a new spirit into his team-mates resulting in the ral ly which won the game lehigh on the other hand plain ly showed lack of practice their defense was not all it should have been several times when the can adians rushed down the floor to the basket hartung was the only op posing guard in the way of the ad vance lehigh's offense showed spurts of brilliancy several times henschen broke through the tor onto line and placed the ball in the basket by long shots but the brown and white's teamwork lack ed the usual finish there were too many long shots attempted when the ball could have been worked nearer to the basket toronto started the game strong but inside of a minute lehigh by a brilliant passing game recovered the ball snyder and lees shot two field baskets in quick succession bell of toronto managed to put one in after a long run but hen schen matched it by a successful long shot henschen and lees fea tured for a while with long runs then the spurt of speed shown by the brown and white died down and toronto evened the score af ter ten minutes of play 9 to 9 a long basket by lingle was offset a second later by a pretty shot from mclean continued on page four then followed a time when nei ther team could gain on the other caple was put in for dufnll and the canadians lacking his leader ship quieted down henschen was on saturday the lehigh swim ming team will meet the strong rutgers tankmen for rutgers it is the initial contest and with all of the last year's team back not having lost a man by graduation the squad which will oppose lehigh will be a first-rate combination to add to the power of the team there will be a few new men coming from the freshman class who have been showing good form in practice giebel captain for the second year will no doubt represent rut gers in the 50-yard 100-yard and relay races in the intercollegiate contest last year this speedy swim mer took three ist places the 50 yard 100-yard and backhand stroke ross is doing well in practice and is training hard for his dual with harmon who defeated him in the 220-yard race last year gailbraith will no doubt try to carry away the honors in the dive while sparks and yon standing will plunge with considerable improvement over last year the rutgers relay team will undoubtedly be the same as last year with giebel ross rossetti and enander as their representatives ever since november of last year the rutgers team has been hard at work getting into shape for this in itial meet with lehigh and they are putting forth a mighty effort to avenge the defeat of last year at the hands of the brown and white the lehigh team has been mak ing some improvement since the ra ther poor showing against prince ton and practice this week will de termine who will represent lehigh in the meet at new brunswick at a meeting of the athletic com mittee held last thursday quite a number of points of general inter est to the student body were dis cussed and settled practically all of the matters brought up having to do with football or soccer it was decided that owing to the fact that no game had been secured for september 29 the season would start one week later than has pre viously been the custom next year's football candidates then will be required to report only one week before the opening of college in stead of two as this year some amount of discussion over the situation regarding the proposed colgate-lehigh game for novem ber 3 w r as brought up and the com mittee was advised that negotiations were already under way to secure a game v : th carr cgie tech for this date which has been left open by colgate's default dr richards on behalf of lehigh has taken up the matter with the colgate author ities and has also endeavored to ac quaint the navy authorities with the facts of the case since he was advised that colgate had sounded the navy as to possibilities for a game on that date by a press re port in the public ledger for sun day however the navy has refused to negotiate with colgate until they have settled with lehigh there has been some talk and many ru mors of equity suit and law such rumors are to be absolutely discredi ted if it be a mere matter of money then lehigh can find a game that will derive as much financial return as that which colgate can celed oine main objection to a game with carnegie to be played at pittsburgh is the fact that it will allow two saturdays to elapse with out a home game the rest of the schedule was ratified as follows : — oct 6 — gettysburg at home oct 13 — rutgers away oct 20 — fordham at home oct 27 — muhlenberg at home nov 3 — carnegie tech to be settled nov 10 bucknell away nov 17 alfred at home nov 24 — lafayette at home nov 29 — brown 1 , at providence regarding soccer the following matters were discussed : — the election of a manager is to * be deferred until the scholastic standing of the two competitors c m alford 24 and j h vandyke 24 can be investigated a wednes day game to be played with west point was ratified by the commit tee but must also be sanctioned by the faculty before the date can be dosed the choice of coach was left to some future date the mat ter of awarding letters to the eligi ble soccer men was then discussed continued on page four on monday evening december 18th there was a very interesting meeting of the civil engineering society in the physics lecture room the topic was the dela ware river suspension bridge and the speaker was mr chase an as sistant engineer of the construction on this bridge mr chase opened by giving a brief history of the project it has been a question of much discussion ever since about 1750 but there was no actual progress until 1918 ac tual work was begun in the spring of 1921 after the best location had been determined and after the sus pension bridge was found to be the most suitable and feasible plan the main part of mr chase's ad dress was a description of the con struction and structure of the bridge it is to be the longest sus pension bridge in the world being 1,750 feet long the roadway is to be 57 feet im width and in addition there are to be two foot walks out side of the cables the bridge when finished will cost 28,000,000 dollars of which some 8,000,000 dollars is for real estate it is expected to have the structure completed early m 1926 the two towers supporting the cables will be 350 feet high and will be able to bend 20 inches in each direction to provide for expansion in the cables the cables are 30 inches in diameter and consist of parallel wires each one 196 inch in diameter the total length of these wires will be 25,000 miles the bridge will have a clearance of 135 feet above the water after the meeting had adjourned those present enjoyed cider and pretzels the physics lecture room the topic was the dela ware river suspension bridge and the speaker was mr chase an as sistant engineer of the construction on this bridge mr chase opened by giving a brief history of the project it has been a question of much discussion ever since about 1750 but there was no actual progress until 1918 ac tual work was begun in the spring of 1921 after the best location had been determined and after the sus pension bridge was found to be the most suitable and feasible plan the main part of mr chase's ad dress was a description of the con struction and structure of the bridge it is to be the longest sus pension bridge in the world being 1,750 feet long the roadway is to be 57 feet im width and in addition there are to be two foot walks out side of the cables the bridge when finished will cost 28,000,000 dollars of which some 8,000,000 dollars is for real estate it is expected to have the structure completed early m 1926 the two towers supporting the cables will be 350 feet high and will be able to bend 20 inches in each direction to provide for expansion in the cables the cables are 30 inches in diameter and consist of parallel wires each one 196 inch in diameter the total length of these wires will be 25,000 miles the bridge will have a clearance of 135 feet above the water after the meeting had adjourned those present enjoyed cider and pretzels
