On Saturday, Lehigh travelled to Manhattan for two games. Lehigh fell to the Jaspers 18-3 in the first game. Junior pitcher Kevin Post received his third loss on the year. In the second game, Lehigh put up a good fight but eventually lost 5-4. Sophomore pitcher James Young recorded his second loss of I the season. | Lehigh-Wagner On Sunday, the Mountain Hawks hosted Wagner at the Goodman Campus. Lehigh fell 3-10 in the first game and the second game was cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled. Junior pitcher Phil Stambaugh received his second loss this year. The Mountain Hawks return to the diamond on Saturday to open its' Patriot League season against Bucknell. The squad will host the Bison in a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon on both days on the Goodman Campus. At the end of the first quarter, the Nittany Lions led the way 6-2. The Mountain Hawks managed to out score Penn State 6-4 in the second and third quarters and tie the game at eight points apiece. In the fourth period, the Nittany Lions proved too tough for the Mountain Hawks as it outscored Lehigh 6-2 and notched the victory. Lehigh was led in scoring by Tim McWilliams and Hernan Zapata, who both netted two goals each. The Mountain Hawks' goalie Todd Schreiner had 21 saves during the game. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 1-3 on the season. The team opens its' Patriot League season against foe Bucknell on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Goodman Campus. Senior tri-captian John Van Doren takes fifth at NCAA tournament. Grapplers named All-Americans Joe Ryan A tough Saturday afternoon among the nation's elite did little to diminish the superb effort by Lehigh's three captains, who claimed one fifth and two sixths, to give the school its fifth Top 20 team finish in the '90s and (unofficially) our 46th in the 69th Annual NCAA Championships. The Brown & White finished in 19th place, with Pennsylvania unofficially Uth and Harvard 20th. John Van Doren, who likes to finish tournaments on a winning note, scored a dominant 10-3 consolations final bout at 184 over Indiana's Victor Sveda. Van Doren scored two takedowns in both the first and third periods, adding 1:14 riding time against the Hoosier. Sveda enjoyed his own remarkable run, with a Big 10 third place and 42- 5 season mark going into his bout with Van Doren, with his prior tourney losses to Nebraska's Brad Vering. For the Somerville senior, it capped an incredible three year run since his 12-15 freshman year, as the only Lehigh wrestler in years to complete four years eligibility in four years. Since '96, John finished with a 96-19 record (.835 W-L) and NCAA third and fifth place medals. His 35-4 record this year is the 2nd best win-lost percentage (.897) in the 1990's for Lehigh, behind only Matt Ruppel's 37-0-1. Ryan Bernholz and Chris Ayres each finished sixth, as Bernholz lost 5-3 to Penn's Brett Matter, for fifth, after dropping a 5-3 bout to Adam Tirapelle. Bernholz finishes the year 37-9, with his 72 career wins a new Lehigh mark for the first two years. Ayres lost 4-3 to Brian Snyder of Nebraska and Easton High School, before his 2-1 loss on riding time to #2 seed Chad Kraft of Minnesota. Ironically, the fathers of Matter and Snyder wrestled for Penn State. Ayres finishes 31-10, creating the first Lehigh trio ever to win 30 bouts in the same season. -Denny Diehl'70 Lehigh Trivia Records and Recollections: How often has a Lehigh team with threeor more qualifiers gone to nationals and enjoyed a 100% return rate in All-Americans? The best rates in Lehigh history: 1980 (6-for-8 for 75%); 1965 (4-6 for '67%); 1956 (2-3 for 67%); 1992 (2-3); and 1966 (4-7 for 57%). This was the most Lehigh All- Americans since 1983 and the most for the EIWA since 1981 (also 8). The last year the league had more was 1976 (9). Penn (3 All-Americans) and Harvard (2) had more than 1 All- American for the first time. Lehigh maintained its third place standing behind only Oklahoma & Oklahoma State with a remarkable string of having at least 1 All-American in 42 of the last 46 years.
