During his 1998 campaign, the 6-0 forward led the nation in goals per game (1.33) and holds all six Patriot League scoring records. Mittendorf was selected eighth overall out of 36 draftees. place Chris Marshall, Head Swimming and Diving Coach, is named Patriot League's Coach of the Year. Frank Donnelly, Men' and Women's Diving Coach, is named Patriot League's Diving Coach of the Year. Back when the Patriot League started not even the most optimistic of observers felt that Army could ever be beaten in the men's competition or that Army or Navy could be beaten on the women's side. Well that's not entirely true. Lehigh head coach Chris Marshall always felt that, in time, Lehigh could unseat the military academy's. In the last two years the Mountain Hawks have done just that. Last year it was the Lehigh women who emerged victorious. One year later it was the men's turn as Lehigh shocked Army over the weekend by medaling in all but two events en route to a meet winning total of 872 points. Army finished second with 792. "Never did I think it was a pipedream for us to win a league championship," an elated Marshall said after the meet. "I didn't think it would happen as quickly as it did, but even after we would lose to Army or Navy I tried to remain realistic. We would always talk about it as a team." Years of hard work, not only by this current squad, but also by such former Lehigh greats as Rob Chesley, Dave and Paul Littlefield, Ken Johns, Jeff Cline and Dan Rodenhaver all paid off Saturday night in Annapolis. Every member of Lehigh's team turned in top-rated performances. Chief among them was senior co-captain Chris Scheier. A double-winner, Sheier finished first in the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. His butterfly win was especially satisfying considering he touched out Army's Dirk Steinfort. It was Steinfort who had touched out Sheier in each of the three previous years championship meets. "I had hoped the team as well as myself could go out with a bang," Sheier said excitedly. "I never thought we could ccome close to beating Army when I first came here. It's strange to think that we did it. I'm just amazed." Amazing was one way to describe the 500 freestyle finish on day one of the meet. In addition to Sheier winning the event, teammate Rick Golebiewski finished second and senior Brian Merrittt touched third. The event helped to set the tone for the entire meet. Everywhere you turned a Lehigh swimmer was receiving a medal and in fact anyone who didn't know the Lehigh fight song before the meet, knows it now as it was played after every first place finish. Lehigh men's winners included freshman Jason Boire in the 400 IM who beat out sophomore teammate Andy Holland, who finished second. The men's 800 freestyle relay team of freshman Rick Golebiewski, Holland, senior Jason Fox and Scheier finished first. Gobeliewski touched first in the 1650 freestyle with senior Brian Merritt finishing fourth and freshman John Baumann fifth. Junior Adam Ritchie won the 200 backstroke and Holland the 200 breastroke. Lehigh also excelled in the diving events as Kevin Allen won both the one and three meter diving events. Allen was named the diver of the meet. And what would a meet be without Chris Marshall winning a coach-of-the year award. Marshall did so for the seventh time in his career. Lehigh head diving coach Frank Donnelly took home Diving Coach-of-the-Meet honors. Lost in all of the euphoria of the men's win was a very solid performance by the women's team. For the second straight year Lehigh beat Army. What a credit to the women's team that victories over Army are now expected! Freshman Jamie Grivalsky finished first in the 200 butterfly, but it was the Lehigh depth and an abundance of second and third place finishes that led Lehigh to the second place finish. Freshman Lauren Ayres finished second in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Vanessa Buschmann and Grivalsky placed 2-3 in the 200 IM. Senior Taryn Filo was second in the 1 and 3-meter diving. Junior Jessica Weathers and senior Michelle Pealer finished 2- 3 in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Dea Weisman touched third in the 200 breastroke and Grivalsky and Ayres finished 2-3 in the 200 butterfly. -Glenn Hoffman Associate Athletics Director 1. Lehigh 2. ARMY 872 792 3.
