PATRIOT LEAGUE LEADERS Under first year head coach Michelle Finegan the field hockey team is off to a 4-0 start in Patriot League action and in first place. FOOTBALL: UNH beats Lehigh in non-league action, 8 OLYMPIC SPORTS: Paul Short Cross Country Run results, 7 Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball & Tennis results 7 South Mountaineer Volume 10, Issue 7 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly October 15,1996 Gutsy effort at UNH falls short Bid for win over #24 Wildcats halted by UNH running game by Corky Blake Easton Express Times Jerry Azumah, who set a Goodman Stadium rushing record last year with 278 yards, again riddled Lehigh's defense for 248 yards and three touchdowns to lead the University of New Hampshire to a 42-27 non-league victory over Lehigh before a homecoming crowd of 7,335 at Cowell Stadium. The sophomore scored on runs of 1, 16 and 2 yards and the Wildcats, ranked 24th in Division I-AA, accumulated 512 yards of total offense. Lehigh (2-4) stayed within striking range of the Wildcats and trailed by eight with 6:37 left on Brian Baker's 5-yard touchdown run. New Hampshire came back with a 29-yard completion from Chris Bresnahan to Al Barrow and a 25-yard Azumah dash around left end. Those plays set up a 4-yard TD toss from Bresnahan to reserve tight end Tyson Wehrman. Lehigh advanced to New Hampshire's 25 on its ensuing possession. Three incompletions and a sack of quarterback Seka Edwards ended the threat. The Wildcats sealed the outcome with a 5-play, 71- yard drive that culminated in Dave Lopez's 2-yard score. "Our kids played real hard and we had an opportunity to win with six minutes left against a talented football team," Lehigh head coach Kevin Higgins said. "I'm proud of the kids and the effort they gave." Junior Seka Edwards started his second straight game at quarterback for Lehigh and improved on last week's performance at Princeton. Edwards completed 21-of-40 attempts for 367 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 1 yard for another score. "I was pretty comfortable putting the ball up in the air," Edwards said. "We had a good game plan, and they had a lot of holes in their defense. We were mixing the crossing routes and the outs." Azumah's 1-yard score put New Hampshire ahead 7- 0 with 1:35 left in the first half. Lehigh answered with a 65- yard scoring drive that featured a pair of 16-yard completions from Edwards to sophomore split end Deron Braswell. Baker's 4-yard run tied the score at 7- all. Azumah again scored on a 13-yard run. Lehigh failed to gain a first down, and punt returner Calvin Jones dashed 55 yards up the middle of the field for a 19-7 Wildcat lead. The Engineers fumbled the kickoff, but their defense stopped Bresnahan shy of a first down on fourth-down sneak. Four plays later Edwards scored from the 1. The big play was a 53-yard reception by Braswell. A 35-yard field goal by John Curry gave New Hamphsire a 22-14 halftime lead. Late in the third quarter, a defensive holding call on 3rd-and-17 kept a Lehigh drive alive. But Baker, who gained 73 yards on 21 carries, fumbled at the UNH 17 to kill the march. New Hampshire (4-1) retaliated with a 15-play drive that featured six rushes and a pass reception by Azumah, who banged off three tacklers for the 2-yard TD and a 29- 14 lead with 11:42 left in the game. The Engineers didn't quit. Edwards completed a 13-yard pass to Joe Falzone to keep the chains moving on fourth down. A personal foul on UNH gave Lehigh another first down at the Wildcats 5-yard- line. Baker then scored on the next play. Braswell was the offensive star for Lehigh catching seven passes for 139 yards. Sophomore wide receiver, Deron Braswell leads the Patriot League in receiving with 629 yards Joe Ryan Joe Ryan Freshman Ian Eason recorded four unassisted tackles and one assisted tackles.
