DID YOU KNOW? The first-ever gold medal in the Olympics was won by Thomas Burke, a former Lehigh coach in 1896. He won the 100 and 400 meters. This Week's Schedules/Colgate Football Preview Page 13 Olympic Fall Sports Previews Page 14-15 Lehigh Soccer Tournament Page 15 South Mountaineer Volume 9, Issue 02 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly September 12,1995 Army runs over Lehigh 42-9 FOOTBALL STATS by Glenn Hofmann Sports Communications Director West Point, NY — Members of the Lehigh football team toured West Point on Friday, the day before they were set to battle in what has been called one of college football's finest settings. On Saturday they played Division I-A Army at Michie Stadium. Army showed Lehigh why they are always ranked among the top 10 rushing teams in the country as the Cadets piled up 376 yards on the ground en route to a 42-9 season-opening win. As good as the vaunted Army rushing attack was, Air Lehigh was equally as inept. Lehigh could manage only 98 yards passing and 204 total yards of offense. In the process, Lehigh's consecutive game double figure scoring streak was ended at 96 straight games. "Going into the third quarter I thought we were in good position to win the game," head coach Kevin Higgins said. And he was right. Lehigh trailed 21-9 at the half, not an overwhelming deficit considering how the game started. On the first play from scrimmage Rashad Hodge ran 74 yards for a touchdown. On its next series the Cadets travelled 66 yards on 14 plays to make it 14-0. Air Lehigh came back and seemed to get in synch. Senior quarterback Bob Aylsworth completed 4-of-5 passes, the last a six-yard TD strike to sophomore Chris Ashby. The extra point was no good due to a botched hold. -Dave Bourque Senior defensive back Roman McDonald makes one of his 16 tackles. The Lehigh defense stiffened on the next series forcing an Army punt. Starting at their own 45, Lehigh marched down to the Army 30, but Aylsworth was intercepted. "The ball just sailed on me," Aylsworth said. "To win a game like this against a I-A opponent you can't make mistakes and we did." Army took the turnover and 10 plays later scored on a one-yard run by quarterback Ron McAda to give the Cadets a 21-7 advantage. Again the Lehigh offense responded thanks in large part to junior Rabih Abdullah, who gained 31 of his 90 yards on the next series. Unable to get a touchdown, senior placekicker Mike Swartz kicked a career-long 42-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 21-9. Rabih Abdullah turns upfield against Army Saturday in Lehigh's 42-9 loss. Abdullah rushed for 90 yards on 12 carries. ■Dave Bourque Junior Curtis May stopped Army's next drive at the Lehigh 20 yard-line with an interception and the stage appeared set for a great second half. "I think we were well prepared," Aylsworth said. "In the first half the offense looked good, but in the second half we were out of synch." Lehigh could muster only 24 yards passing and 36 yards rushing in the second stanza. Meanwhile, the Army offense wore down the Lehigh defense turning the game into a rout. "We were prepared," senior defensive back Roman McDonald, who had a team-high 16 tackles, said. "We didn't make the plays when we had to." "I think we are more physical and stronger than last year," Higgins said. "I think in games two and three it will show up." Game two is against a I-AA and Patriot League foe Colgate on Saturday. Let's hope Higgins is right. EXTRA POINTS ... Two freshman started on the defensive line, Nick Martucci and David Merrifield ... Thirteen frosh were on two-deep depth chart... Lehigh was stopped at Army one-yard-line late in second half... Junior backup quarterback Aaron Brown is also on kickoff and punt teams ...
