N.Y.) was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the week ending I/23. Herzog led the Engineers with 10 points against Fordham (1/20) and; followed up the pcrfoiniaee with a -career-high 19 point cl'forl in Lehigh's near-upset of Army (1/ 22). She then led Lehigh with 15 points against Hartford (1/24). marking the third straight game she led the Engineers in scoring. For more on Herzog. please see feature story on page 3. CAREER BESTS CONTINUE - Just one week after three Leliigli players scored their career high in points in a 105-94 win over Army, the Engineers were al it again. Allan Campbell (Dallastown, Pa.) scorched the nets for a career-high 26 points while Jason Fichter (Occanport. N.J.) tied a personal best with 15 rebounds in Lehigh's 81-75 upset ol" first-place-Colgate on ihc Red Raiders' home floor. The win moved Lehigh lo 4-2 in Palriol League play and moved the Engineers back into, sole possession ol" second place in the league. Lehigh swim teams shock Rutgers; rock Lafayette By MARC GESUALDO South Mountaineer Editor The word "perfect" is rarely used because it's a term which can be taken too liglnly. But il just might describe the week that Chris Marshall and his Lehigh swim learns recently experienced. The Engineer men and women both posted huge victories al Rutgers on Wednesday and followed up by crushing Lafayette on Saturday at Jacobs Pool. -The win over Rutgers was the biggest I've ever experienced in terms of programs we've beaten and it's certainly a highlight of my five years." Marshall said. "Bui beating Lafayette is always big." The wins over Rutgers couldn't have been much closer as the women look a 121 - 120 decision while the men pulled out their meet by a 124-117 score. On the women\s side.Casey Bahrenburg and Angela Palma were double winners, with Bahrenburg taking the 50 free (:25.I2) and ihc 100 free (:54.42) and Palma sweeping the diving events with a 210.53 score in llic onc-nieicr and 240.75 in the iliicc-nietcr. "We actually locked up the meet when Micki Montoro finished second in the 200 breaststroke," Marshall said. "Thai meant we only needed to gel first and third in the free relay rather than going 1-2-3. We knew we could do it because of our depth.". Theresa Doyle also had a victory in the 1000 free (10:53.42) and the forcmcniioncd 400 free relay team look first-place honors with a 3:42.01 time. While the men didn't have as many individual winners, they scored when il ,_ counted. Take Jeff Cline for example. The sophomore freestyler took second place in all ilircc of his events (200,500 and 1.000) unci broke a school record in ihe 1000 ■free (9:27.04). despite being nipped by Rutgers' Larry Page in each event. "When Kevin Murphy told me he'd won ihe ihrcc-mclcr dive. I knew we were going lo win." Murphy's victory in llic event put Lehigh over the lop as ihc Engineers placed 2-3 in ihc 50 free (Derek Moore. Dan Rodcnliavcr), 100 free (Moore. Rodcnliavcr). 200 backstroke (Rob Chesley, Ben Fradkin) and one-meter dive (Murphy, Chuck Donaldson). Wilh momentum still fresh in its Corner. Leliigli channeled all of it inio Saturday's meeting with archrival Lafayette. The men slapped a 169- 72 loss on ihc Leopards while the women pasted their neighbors from Easton by a 177-54 count. "Normally when the meel has been decided early on. you go lo exhibition racing bin we decided lo go full house." Marshall said. "It's nothing against Lafayette's athletes or coaches but it's a major rivalry and you can't back off." The men were led by Cline's triple-winner effort as he scored victories in llic 200 free Rob Chesley was one of many swimmers who contributed to Lehigh's 2-0 week. "We were already winning X5-29 when we wenl lo break as we won some early events which I wasn't sure we would win." The women, meanwhile, look first place in every event except the 400 free relay. Bahrenburg (1:59.24in ihc 200 free and :55.17 in Ihe 100 lice), Dede (:25.82 in llie 50 lice and 5:1 K.44 in the 500 free) Palma (235.S75 in the one-melei' dive and 243.375 in the three-meter dive) and Alexis Corr (2:16 11 in ihc 200 fly and 2: fcX.66 in llic 200 IM) were all iwo-iimc winners. Oilier individual winners were Jamie Burrough in the 200 breast (2:35.5K). Amy Kravitz in the 200 back (2:14.72). Catherine O'Connor in llic 1000 free (11:05.31) and both relay learns. The women stand al 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League while llic men are 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the league wilh Drexel and Bucknell on lap this week.
