Scott Semptimphelter and Dave Cecchini did connect on two late scoring plays, but it wasn't enough as Bucknell defeated Lehigh 32-27 to put a big blemish oil what was turning into a very exciting season. The loss, coupled with Lafayette's win over Holy Cross left the Engineers in atie for second place in the Patriot League with Bucknell. Each team is 3-1 and trails Lafayette (3-0-1) by one-half game with one game left. Bucknell finishes November 20th at Colgate and of course Lehigh and Lafayette battle for the 129th time at Goodman Stadium the same day. Still, with a win over Lafayette the Engineers will gain at least a share of the league title. A Lehigh win coupled with a Bucknel I loss would give Lehigh the title outright. None of the above will matter however if certain disturbing trends continue. As has been the case in almost every game this season the Lehigh offensive and defensive lines were dominated at the line of scrimmage. The Bison gained 498 yards of offense including 220 on the ground. Once again the secondary was picked apart as Bison quarterbacks Rob Glus and Travis Kopp threw for 278 yards. Once again Lehisih was unable to musterany type of rushing attack, gaining just 42 yards on the ground. And finally Semptimphelter had very little time to throw the ball as he was sacked four times and pressured on numerous other LEHIGH BUCKNELL 14 12 —27 —32 LEH — Dyson 36 FG BUCK - Bernardini 22 pass from Glus (kick failed) BUCK - Garner 35 pass from Glus (Miller kick( LEH - Dyson 20 FG LEH - Lookenbill 2 run (Dyson kick) BUCK - Garner 3 pass from Glus (Miller kick) BUCK -- McHugh 1 run (pass failed) BUCK -- McHugh 1 run (pass failed) LEH - Cecchini 23 pass from Semptimphelter (pass good) LEH — Cecchini 22 pass from Semptimphelter (pass failed) TEAM STATS LEHIGH BUCKNELL First Downs 20 23 Rushes-Yards 28-46 53-220 Yds. Lehigh has been able to overcome these deficiencies often this year, but against a Bucknell learn which four weeks ago was I- 5 they couldn't. "Offensively this was our poorest effort up front all season." said head coach Hank Small. "We couldn't get a running game going today. They ran the ball well enough to win and made the big pass plays." "I look al the big pass plays they bad and our inability to get the ball in the endzone in the first half as the difference." The day started off simple enough as Lehigh marched clown the field on the opening possession, but Mark Lookenbill fumbled at the Bison 13-yard line. Four plays later Lehigh got the ball back at the Bison 39-yard line, but could only manage a 36-yard field goal by Byron Dyson, the longest of his career. Bucknell scored twice to take a 13-6 halftime lead. Lehigh tied it at 13 on a Lookenbill two-yard run in the third quarter, but the Bison exploded for three unanswered touchdowns to take a 32-13 lead with 4:36 left. Semptimphelter hit Cecchini for touchdowns of 23 and 22 yards to make the score closer than the szame really was. "This is a horrible feeling." Cecchini said afterwards. "I hale losing anytime, but when you're going for a championship..." EXTRA P()INTS:The leaguechampionship is based on a point system (2 pts. for a win l for a lie and 0 for a loss). But mention llie University ofldaho Vandals lo I-AA football coaches and a look of fear grows on iheir face. The Vandals area member of llic Big Sky Conference and since 19X2 have won five league championships and made eight NCAA I-AA appearances. In fact, the Vandals have enjoyed I 1 straight winning seasons. So why are they on the Lehigh schedule? "The opportunity to schedule a team like Idaho will allow us lo measure where our program is against one of ihe best teams al our level in the country." Director of Athletics Joe Sierreti explained. "Jusl as importantly it will give our kids an excellent educational opportunity.;" The opportunity lo schedule Idaho came about when the Yankee Conference expanded last year. Among the teams thai joined were William & Mary and Northeastern, two schools traditionally on the Leliigli schedule. This presented three open dales on the Lehigh schedule. Sterrett was able lo pickup Delaware and Hol'stra. bui still there was llie November 13th open date. '•We looked al I over the country for a game againsi a I-AA opponent." Sierreti said. Idaho became attractive because of their well known offense, which is similar to ours." While there has been some concern over the timing of the game, with Lafayette jusl one week later, Sierreti points out "You can gel hurl in any game."
