LEHIGHLIGHTS AN ALL-STAR PERFORMANCE - Lehigh junior Steve Cassidy came through with a gutty performance last Monday night at the NWCA All-Star Classic al Stabler Center. The event featured the top two wrestlers in the nation at each weight class, but Iowa's Terry Steiner (ranked #1 at 150) was unable to attend due to illness. Cassidy, who was selected to replace Steiner just a few days before the meel. lost a close 6-4 decision to Penn State's Troy Sunderland. Cassidy scored the first two points of the bout on a takedown before Sunderland reeled off five straight points to take a lead he wouldn't relinquish. Due to his performance, Cassidy moved up to #9 in the national rankings as determined by Amateur Wrestling News. The two wrestlers will likely square off again in this Saturday's dual meet at Penn State. The Engineers, now 7-10 overall and 1 -3 in the EIWA, crushed Drexel 33-3 and California University (Pa.) 30-8. but dropped their conference match with Syracuse, 26-10. Rick Hepp upped his overall record to 27-1 and remained a perfect 15-0 in duals. Hepp and Ron Edmund, were the only winners in Friday night's 37-9 loss to fowa State, Edmund taking a forfeit at heavyweight. Hepp, going 3-0 on the day, defeated Syracuse's Seamus Lyman (13-5), recorded his seventh pin of the season against Drexel's Colby Barth in 6:34 and took a forfeit against California. The Engineers ended up shuffling the lineup due to the absence of Sam Dollyhigh at 142 and Charlie Getz at Dllyhigh? and Getz sprained his1 shoulder, both in the Iowa State thatch. The new faces in the lineup against Drexel all scored victories. Jung Lee won by technical fall over Peter Kade, and Brian Booze decisioned Adam Hockenberry 5-3. Booze and O'Byrne also had wins against California, along with Toby Fagan, who stepped in at 150 with a 13- 12 decision over Bob Burmeister. Ryan Hammersmith and Ron Edmund came up with decisions at 190 and heavyweight. Lehigh head coach Tom Hutchinson was pleased with his young squad's depth. "This showed that we have more depth than in other years." Hutchinson said. However, the Syracuse match ended up being a battle of roster depth and the Orangemen held out longer than Lehigh. "They have people out of the lineup and we have people out of the lineup," Syracuse head coach Ed Carlin explained. "This is the time of year we start losing people." The Orangemen took the first two bouts, including Tom Koch's loss to Fred Fabbrini (12-5). John McCumber came up with a 7-4 decision over Jeff Duque at 134. O'Byrne lost a 10-4 decision to Jamie Kyriazis and Steve Cassidy, who looked tough at 150 after missing the Iowa State meet, decisioned Chris Saba 6-2. Syracuse left the Lehigh Valley with three wins and an 8-3 overall record, while California went winless on the day, falling to 3-15-1 on the season. And why shouldn't they? After the regular season ended with a couple of solid showings at Bucknell, head coach Chris Marshall has to feel his teams' best efforts are yet to come. The men beat the Bison, 138-106, while the women swam well in losing, 130-104, to a Patriot League powerhouse. The performances left both squads with 6-3 records and reestablished Lehigh as one of the teams to watch at next week's Patriot League Championships at Colgate. And if the regular season is an accurate gauge, the Engineers will be making plenty of noise. "Both teams swam fast against Bucknell but most importantly, they swam tough," Marshall said. "Bucknell was really up for this meet but we stayed tough throughout both meets." Freshman Jeff Cline was one of the key factors in the men's triumph, as he took first place in the 500 free and 1000 free. Andy Jones continued to dominate with a win in the 200 breast, and the 400 medley relay team of Jones, Vince Tsai, Matt Goodrich and Hunter Simpson also emerged victorious. But the turning point of the meet was when Lehigh swept the diving events. Chuck Donaldson and Kevin Murphy finished one- two in the one-meter dive, with Donaldson setting a school record. That was followed up by Murphy's victory in the three-meter dive in which he, too, set a school record. "That was the key for us because we Jaime Burrough won the 200 breaststroke on Saturday against Bucknell. -Photo by Joe Ryan didn't expect to be sodominant in the diving," Marshall said. "They really came through for us when we needed it and gave us a big lead." Individual winners for the women's squad were Angela Palma in the three-meter dive, Jaime Burrough in the 200 breaststroke and the 400 free relay team of Theresa Doyle, Darryl Smith, Stephanie Martyak and Catherine McGuckin. Palma set a school record in her first-place finish. "Bucknell had a lot of big guns up front but they also had strong depth," Marshall said. "Our team swam well, but we just ran into a real well-balanced team." The Engineers have the luxury of a 10- day rest period before the Patriot League Championships start. The key for Lehigh will be to maintain the same level of confidence that's carried the squad through one of its finest seasons in history. "We've trained hard all year and we know the physical capability is there," Marshall said. "The fact that we swam tough against Bucknell is a great sign because it translates into mental toughness." And should that mental toughness be on display next week in Hamilton, N.Y., it may wind up sinking several Patriot League foes.
