LEHIGHLIGHTS A PATRIOTIC UPDATE - Since the last publication of the South Mountaineer, several Engineer hoopsters have received honors from the Patriot League. In men's action, senior guard Chuck Penn was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the week ending 12/13. In that same week, freshman forward Maurice Hallet was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. On the women's side, freshman guard Jessica Mudry also received Rookie of the Week honors for that week. THE 1,000-POINT JACKPOT— Senior guard Chuck Penn scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career when he hit a short jumper early in the second half of the Engineers' game at Villanova 12/28. The Allentown, Pa. native becomes the 18th Lehigh men's basketball player to achieve that honor and the fourth in the last three years, along with Mike O'Hara, Bob Krizansky and Dozie Mbonu. "POLL" POSITIONS - The latest EIWA rankings show six Lehigh wrestlers in the conference's top five. Junior Tom Koch is fifth at 126 pounds, junior John McCumber is fourth al 134 and sophomore Brian Cippolone ranks fourth at 158. Three of the six are ranked second -junior Steve Cassidy at 150, senior Sam Dollyhigh at 142 and sophomore Rick Hepp at 167. The Engineers are ranked fourth as a team in the EIWA behind Navy, Cornell and Brown. HIGH FLYIN'— Two Lehigh men's track athletes qualified for the IC4A Indoor Track Championships after Saturday's TAC Development Meet at Rauch Field House. Cleveland McCrayjumpedapersonal best 23 feet, 9 inches in the men's long jump to advance to the IC4A Tourney. He also placed first in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in 7.75 seconds, and barely missed the cutoff to advance. Hassan Young, running in the men's 400-meter dash, qualified for the tourney in 49.38 seconds. Ranked sixth nationally at 167 lbs., Hepp moved up to 177 at Sunday's ACC-EIWA Challenge and added three more pins for a perfect 7-0 dual meet record. He was also unanimously picked by the coaches as the Most Outstanding EIWA wrestler. Lehigh, ranked fourth in the EIWA, faced three ACC schools, defeating nationally-ranked Clemson (29-9), but losing to defending ACC champions North Carolina (21-14) and a tough Maryland squad (21-14). Lehigh's dual meet record now stands at 4-5. "This is the kind of team I thought we'd have coming into the season," said head coach Tom Hutchinson. "I think we're capable of beating almost anyone on a good day and losing to almost anyone on a bad day." Freshman Jason Kutz, who has been rehabilitating from elbow surgery, made his first appearance of the season at 118 pounds. Kutz dropped his first match to North Carolina's Jeff Vasquez 17-10, but shook off the first-match jitters and pinned Clemson's James Jones in 5:09. Freshman David Hardwick lost his only bout of the day by a technical fall (18-2; 4:22) to Maryland's tenth- ranked David Land. Jun ior Tom Koch went 2-1 on the day, losing a close match to Clemson' s Sam Henson 3-1. Henson is ranked third in the nation at 118 pounds. Koch won his remaining two matches by decisioning Jared Ezzel (North Carolina) 5-3 in overtime and Jim Guzzio (Maryland) 10-8. Juniors John McCumber and Toby Fagan each saw action at 134. McCumber split his two matches, 1992-93 Individual Records — losing to top-ranked T.J. Jaworsky of North Carolina and decisioning Chris Moreno of Maryland 15-3. Senior Sam Dollyhigh struggled at 142; dropping a 14-7 decision to Dave Leonardis (North Carolina) and a 12-7 decision to Keith Burgess (Maryland). Chris O'Byrne also had trouble at 142, losing a 3-2 decision to Mike Mammon of Clemson. In the 150-pound class, junior Steve Cassidy, ranked tenth in the nation, was surprised by Maryland's Steve Woods who decisioned him 3-1 in overtime. Cassidy decisioned North Carolina's Reid Monaghan (17-6) and Clemson's Mike Miller (12-3) to finish 2-1 on the day. Strunck lost a technical fall to North Carolina's David Reynolds (20-4; 4:24), but bounced back to decision Tommy Stafford {Clemson and Mike Von Oss (Maryland), 4-1 and 6-2, respectively. Hepp, who has wrestled all but two of his seven dual bouts at 177, decisioned North Carolina's David Reynolds (16-2), Clemson's Tim Morrissey (7-6) and Maryland's Marc Papa (12-0). Charles Getz, a junior, earned the first win by fall of his collegiate career over Clemson's Scott Engel, pinning him in 3:41. Getz dropped his other bout of the day to North Carolina's Damon Michelsen 5-1. Classmate Anthony Silimperi lost his only match to Kevin Brown of Maryland 11-0. At heavyweight, sophomore Jon Rose and freshman Ron Edmund both saw action. Edmund won his only bout, decisioning Brent Ingram of Clemson 8-2. Rose went 0-2, losing to Rick Hall (North Carolina) 3-2 and Bill Ferencz (Maryland) 2-5. MAT NOTES - Hepp became first LU wrestler since Darryl Burley to reach Midlands finals (12/29-30) and is now 18-1 against NCAA-eligible wrestlers...Engineers took-two of three matches at Michigan quad (119), defeating Ferris State 25-15 and Morgan State 31-15 before losing to Michigan, 36- 11. Lehigh hosts Rider, Carson Newman and Brown on Saturday at Stabler.
