mmm ?it^**^?iSfts^pi^^SSM Volume 32, Number 28 May 3, 1990 Bethlehem, Pa. Golfers win first ECC title White 6, Brown 0 Small to announce starting QB soon Lehigh's grid squad put the finishing touches on its first spring practice of the 1990's last Saturday as the White team scored a 6-0 win in the annual Brown & White game. Both teams played well defensively, which head coach Hank Small said was a welcome sign. "Both defenses played so well," Small said. "We've been building toward that and building toward that and the fellas showed that we can play excellent defense." Due to a rash of injuries, the game was limited to two full quarters. While the shortened game was a welcome relief to the guys playing in the trenches on a 93- degree day, the two quarterbacks probably would have liked two more quarters. Glenn Kempa (Taylor, Pa.) and Al Snyder (Peoria, 111.) have been two-thirds of another Lehigh quarterback battle during spring practices. Freshman Eric Abramson (Parsippany, N.Y.) is the third party in this fight but is a year or two away from making a contribution, Small said. Last year, Todd Brunner emerged from the spring battle to set 13 offensive records and Small is hoping either Kempa or Snyder can do the same this year. Neither played extremely well during the Spring Game. Small said he and his staff will reveiw the films and decide on a starter within a week or two. "I've got to evaluate this last piece of information," Small said. "How they handled today, what their poise was like, how they ran their teams. I've got to take all those different factors and add to it what I've already seen. Then I'll decide." No statistics were kept during the game. The game's lone touchdown was a Kempa to Jeff Hahn (Hummelstown, Pa.) three-yard pass late in the first period. The socre was set up when White linebacker Tom Erwin (Philadelphia, Pa.) intercepted a Snyder pass and returned it 35 yards. It appeared Erwin might score himself until he was cut down by Snyder, who had the angle and got the linebacker at the knees. NOTES: Post-game honors, handed out to the most improved players during spring practice, went to freshmen Jason Cristino (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Adam Ciperski (Wayne, N.J.) as most improved rookies while Ken Beesmer (Kingston, N.Y.) and John Gehrig (Westminster, Md.) were tabbed as most improved veterans. Erwin, slowed by injuries in his career at Lehigh, is expected to vye for time at middle linebacker since a shortage of linebackers has forced Small to move former inside men Craig Domalewski (Hawthorne, N.J.) and Beesmer outside. Defensive back Brian Duda goes up for an interception in the Brown & White game. Duda did not catch the ball, but the White won the game 6-0. photography by YOUNG HONG For the first time in school history, Lehigh can lay claim to being the best the East Coast Conference has to offer in golf. The Engineers won their first-ever ECC golf title by beating out two-time defending champion Delaware 304-313. Bucknell finished third at 317 in the rain-shortened event which turned into a one day tournament due to inclement weather on Monday in the Poconos. Individually, junior Scott Ferguson (Athens, Pa.) led Lehigh and took top prize in the conference by shooting a 73 edging John Ingham of Bucknell who shot a 74. Freshman Sean Markey (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) of Lehigh finished third at 75 while sophomore David Strassburger (Newton, Mass.) finished in a four way tie for fifth at 77. First year head coach Kelly Gutshall understandably was pleased with the team's performance. "The whole team played great and under difficult circumstances. Scott Ferguson played like he has all year, he's our team leader, just a solid player and a great putter." For Ferguson it marked the fifth time in seven outings that he led Lehigh in scoring while the tournament win was Lehigh's second this year, the East Stroudsburg tourney being the other. With only a Wednesday match at Colgate left on the schedule, Lehigh is assured of its best golfing record ever. Currently the Brown & White are 12-1 overall.
