Volume 31, Special Issue Bethlehem, Pa. NFL to play at Goodman this summer Lehigh University will host two professional scrimmages this summer at Murray H. Goodman Stadium. The two contests slated will pit the New York Jets vs. Washington Redskins on July 29, 1989, followed by the New York Giants vs. New York Jets on August 5, 1989. The Jets vs. Giants contest will be a veteran controlled scrimmage, while a rookie scrimmage will be held by the Jets and Redskins on July 29. Both scrimmages are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Lehigh's new Goodman Stadium. "Some of our coaches had a chance to take a look at the stadium this spring when we came down to test some prospects from Lehigh's football squad," explained Ray Callahan, quality-control coach of the New York Jets.. See NFL SCRIMMAGE page 8 West Point's Director of Athletics named Colonial League Exec. Director WEST POINT, N.Y. — Carl F. Ullrich, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the U.S. Military Academy since August of 1980, has been named Executive Director of the Colonial League, effective July 1, 1989. He will serve in a dual capacity as West Point's Director of Athletics and The Colonial League's Executive Director for the 1989-90 academic year, and will become full-time Executive Director of the League as of June 1, 1990. Ullrich succeeds Alan W. Childs, Dean of Academic Services at Lafayette GVlege, who has served as the league's Executive Director for the past three years. The Colonial League, founded in 1984 as a football conference, will expand to seven schools in 1990 when competition will commence in 20 sports in addition to football, numbering 11 for men and 10 for women. Joining charter members Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh will be Army and Fordham. Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh currently are members of the eight-school East Coast Conference for sports other than football, and will be leaving that conference to bring all athletics under the Colonial umbrella. Holy Cross, Army and Fordham will be leaving the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to join the expanded Colonial League under similar circumstances. Ullrich, 60, will bring a wealth of administrative experience and knowledge in the field of intercollegiate athletics to his new position. He is a past president of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, has served on numerous NCAA and ECAC committees, has been a member of the ECAC See COLONIAL LEAGUE page 8 It's a wrap The 1988-89 season at a glance Men's Basketball In his first year as head mentor to the basketball team. Dave Duke guided a young, but talented squad to a 10-18 slate (5-9 ECC) and had one newcomer, Dozie Mbonu (Philadelphia, Pa.), selected to the East Coast Conference All-Rookie team. Mbonu led the Engineers in eight offensive categorgies. Mike O'Hara (Springfield. Pa.) was the leader in points (380, 14.7 ppg) and his touch from the field was impressive with a team leading 55 three-pointers made. The Engineers played in seven games decided by one shot (three points) or less, and dropped five of them, largely due to road inexperience. They took photo-finish decisions over Army ;'74r72 and Drexel in doirbleoverthne. 94-92. In addition, an overtime loss (75-65) against Lafayette came only after a missed free throw in the final second of regulation. Women's Basketball Sherie Androlewicz,(Turnersvill, N.J.) became only the third woman in the history of Lehigh basketball to score 1,000 points in her career and only the second junior to do so. She finished the season with 440 points (I.165 for her career) and is well on the way to establishing herself in the record books. Overall the team suffered through a tough 7-21 season, due to injuries and lack of bodies. Androlewicz (15.7 ppg. 4.5 rpg), Pam McAfee (Brentwood, NY) (13.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Jeanne Mooney (Collingswood, NJ) (13.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg) offered the top statistics. Mooney reinjured her knee midway through the season and only played 18 games. The players pulled out all the stops for this year's Lehigh/Lafayette rivalry. The team drove the Lady Leopards into a 67-62 overtime situation, only to lose at Stabler. Then they ventured to Kirby Field House and dropped a mere two-point decision (67-65) to Lafayette. The two sparred again in the first round of the ECC playoffs, but to no avail in a 63-52 end of the season loss. Baseball Pitcher Dave Norwood (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the staff in victories with a 5-4 record, saves (2), games started (10) and complete games (3), innings pitched (59), strikeouts (67) and walks (22). His strikeout total put him among the East Coast Conference and ECAC leaders. Pat Connors (New Canaan, Ct.), paced the baseball squad in batting during the recently-completed season with a .339 mark. Outfielder-pitcher Rick Folk (Wind Gap, Pa.) was close behind with a .338 figure. Folk was one of only three men to play in every game as the Engineers compiled an 11-14 record, 5-9 in the East Coast Conference.
