Lehigh advances to ECC final Two close wins highlight weekend By TOM JAMES South Mountaineer Lehigh held off a tough Drexel ballclub Saturday night, then won a free-throw shooting duel with Bucknell Sunday afternoon to advance to Tuesday's East Coast Conference championship game at Towson State. The game marks the second time in three years Lehigh will face Towson in the finale. This year, the Tigers are 17-II 12. The heroes both days were senior guard Scott Layer (Hatboro, Pa.) and sophomore forward Bob Krizansky (Hazleton, Pa.). Layer hit the winning shot in the waning seconds against Drexel and Krizansky scored 45 points over the two games. Sunday. Krizansky had 24. including 15 in the first half, in guiding the Engineers (18-11) over Bucknell 73-67 in the semifinals. Senior center Tom Martin (Holland, Pa.) tallied 10 and led the Brown and White with 11 rebounds, and Layer handed.out a career-high 10 assists while scoring just two points—free throws with 28 seconds left that gave LU what proved to be an uncatchable four-point edge. Meanwhile, Bucknell senior guard Mike Joseph, the number-one free-throw shooter in the country (93.2 percent), missed the front end of a penalty situation with 18 seconds left and his team six points behind. Senior Mike O'Hara (Springfield, Pa.) sandwiched two pairs of free throws around the Joseph miss to help seal the win. Free throws made a big difference all day long. The Bison (15-14), fourth in the nation as a team (77.1 percent), shot just 60 percent on the afternoon, 54.5 percent in the second half. They missed three of their last five one-and- one situations and ruined their hopes of repeating as ECC champions. Lehigh, meanwhile, flicked in 25 of 30 (83.3 percent) foul tries: Krizansky was 9-11 and junior guard Mike Bob Krizansky scored 45 points in Lehigh's first two ECC tournament games, and was named to the ECC First Team. Photography by JOE RYAN O'Hara 8-9. O'Hara finished with 14. Dozie Mbonu (Philadelphia, Pa.), who had nine points and six boards, nailed two bonus throws with 6:50 left to give LU their 15th lead of the day, 60-59; they neither trailed or were even again. After Jay Hipp* (Alexandria, Va.) and Bison senior forward Greg Leggett each sank two throws, Engineer senior reserve guard Peter Rudman (Highland Park, 111.) tossed in a 25-foot right-wing bomb to sink Bucknell four points deep with 4:56 left and give Lehigh breathing room it couldn't find most of the weekend. Saturday night, Layer hit a jumper driving along the left baseline with four seconds left to give the Engineers a 76-75 quarterfinal win over Drexel. Lehigh got 21 points from Krizansky, a career-high 18 from Rudman including three of LU's six treys, and a lot of gift-wrapped points from Drexel in a 76-75 quarterfinal victory. Drexel, led by 17 points from back-up junior forward Art Clark and senior guard Todd Lehmann's 16, went ahead 75-74 on two free throws by Clarence Armstrong with : 11 to go. After Lehigh called timeout. Layer dribbled down the left sideline. In the left corner, he cut to the basket and let go a 12-footer, falling forward, that sliced through the net and gave Engineers the win. Krizansky, again registered a 15-point first half, seven coming in a 16-4 run over the last 6:30 that lifted the Engineers into a 38-38 halftime tie. He also gave out all four of his assists in the first 20 minutes. The Dragons turned the ball over 10 times in the first half to just three for Lehigh. That negated a 22-12 rebounding edge (10-2 offensive) and kept a hot-shooting Engineer squad (57.1 percent and eight of their last 11) in the game. Oh, there was Rudman. too. He swished seven of 10 shots on the night, and his perimeter exploits made an impact. His three with 10:50 left gave Lehigh a 59-58 lead and triigered an 8-1 streak (the,Engineers stayed in front until the final minute). Another Rudman bomb, from the left corner at the 8:34 mark, capped the run and made it 64-59. HOOP SCOOP: Lehigh's game with Towson was to be broadcast live by ESPN, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The game was one of 23 championship contests the all-sports network was to broadcast this week. If Lehigh advances to the NCAA tournament, it will be the Engineers' third trip in six seasons. Coach Dave Duke was named ECC Coach of the Year while Krizansky was named to the first-team all star squad. Mbonu was tabbed to the second team. Delaware ends Lehigh season with 69-63 win Bv MARC GESUALDO South Mountaineer They say all good things come to an end and that Mt home in a terrible way for the women's basketball team on Sunday night. After an 81-63 victory over Rider on Thursday in the opening round, of the East Coast Conference post-season tournament, the second-seeded Engineers lost a 69-63 decision to Delaware at the Towson Center, ending the team's hopes of an ECC championship. Lehigh suffered from poor. shooting—to the tune of 5-28 for 21.4 percent in the first half and 30.2 percent for the game. Delaware outrebounded Lehigh 56-31 as three Blue Hen players reached double figures in that category led by Sharon Wisler's 16. The game also marked the end of the careers of Jeanne Mooney (Collingswood, N.J.) and Sherie Androlewicz (Turnersville, N.J.) in Lehigh uniforms. Though they led the team with 17 points apiece, it was a harsh end for the seniors-Mooney was just 3 of 11 from the field while Sherie A. made good on just six of 22 shots. "We didn't get into our game at all today," Androlewicz said. "We kept our hopes up and we didn't throw in the towel but things just didn't work out." The Engineers did indeed make a game out of what seemed to be a blowout.' Lehigh trailed by 18 points at the half. Delaware then extended the lead to 50-27 with 14:08 left in the game and appeared to have things wrapped up. But Lehigh went on a 20-8 run to reduce the deficit to 58-47 with over eight minutes to go. After Delaware built the lead back up to 13 points with 3:23 to go, Lehigh went on a 10-2 run to get it down to 68-63 with :21 seconds left. Androlewicz then stole the ball with 15 seconds to go, but Mooney missed a subsequent three-pointer and the game was history. "It's a disappointing way to end the season," said head coach Jocelyn Beck. ' 'We're very proud of them and we really reversed from last year." Beck certainly did an impressive job in her first year as coach and she feels the team has a lot to look forward to despite the graduation of Mooney and Androlewicz. "We're gonna keep it going into next year," Beck said. "We'll have good leader- INSIDE Sherie Androlewicz, Lehigh's all- time leader in scoring and assists, was named East Coast Conference "Player of the Year." see page 3 ship with Sandy (Hume), Jen (Siemaszko), Wendy (Taylor), and Lori (Lynch) so we' re in good shape." ■ In winning the contest Delaware advanced to its second straight ECC See WOMEN'S BASKETBALL page
