Engineers end Skid Lehigh whips Towson 87-69 By ADAM SCHILDKRAUT South Mountaineer The offense that had been hiding for well over a week exposed itself last Saturday night in Stabler Arena as the Lehigh men's basketball team defeated the Tigers of _ Towson State, 87-69. The Engineers lit up the arena as they shot 60.4 percent from the floor and 83.3% percent the free throw line. The victory marked the end of a streak that saw Lehigh lose four consecutive East Coast Conference games. In addition, the win brought Lehigh's record to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference. In other action last week, Lehigh lost two consecutive conference road games, falling 74-69 to Lafayette and 85-73 to Drexel. "We needed it," Lehigh coach Dave Duke said of the Towson win. Lehigh's phenomenal free throw shooting was the major key to their victory. The Engineers, who normally shoot at a 68 percent clip from the charity stripe, converted 25 out of 30 free throws, including 14 straight in the last five minutes of the game to seal the victory. The Engineers started quickly, jumping out to a nine point lead early in the first half behind inspired play from sophomore forwards Dozie Mbonu (Philadelphia, Pa) and Bob Krizansky (Hazleton, Pa). The three point shooting of the Engineers helped them establish their early first half lead. Towson coach Terry Truax said, "Lehigh was magnificent in their first half three point shooting." Lehigh was 4-6 from long distance in the first half, with guards Mike O'Hara See MEN'S BASKETBALL page 3 USA-USSR volleyball match set for Stabler Lehigh University has been chosen as a site for a match between the United States National Volleyball Team and the defending Olympic Gold Medal team from the Soviet Union. The match will take place at 7:30 p.m. Mar. 3 in the Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center. Lehigh is the first of five touring stops for the two teams, who will travel throughout the country on an exhibition tour arranged by the United States Volleyb...! Association. The promoter and host of the event being held at Lehigh is local volleyball coach and enthusiast Jack Casteel. ^_, Casteel, head volleyball coach at Bethlehem Catholic High School, is hosting his second international match—the first was held last year between the United States and Canada. "I'm excited about the growth of volleyball in this area," said Casteel. "Last year's event was such a success that I think it's evident that volleyball is considered to be one of the fastest growing sports in this country." "We're very pleased to be chosen as a site for such a world-class event," said Lehigh's Director of Athletics Joe Sterrett. "It's a credit to our own program, the university, and the community, that we're able to bring in a sporting event of such magnitude to our campus." The United States Women's Volleyball Team is guided by Head Coach Terry Liskevych. Liskevych is in his fifth year of rebuilding a team which lost virtually every member from its Olympic Silver Medal squad of 1984. Liskevych has made great strides in a short period of time as the USA was one of eight teams earning a 1988 Olympic berth at Seoul, Korea. In 1988, the United States posted its best record under Liskevych, going 32-15, which included a seventh place finish at the Olympic Games.
