Volume 33, Number 24 April 10, 1991 Bethlehem, Pa. Lewis to chair wrestling scholarship program Alvin B. Lewis has been named the chairman of the Lehigh wrestling scholarship campaign, with a goal of reaching $2.7 million by 1994-95 in order to endow eight non-need-based full scholarships. The announcement was made by Lehigh University president Peter Likins. Lewis, currently a partner in the Lancaster, Pa. law firm of Hartman, Underhill & Brubaker, is a member of Lehigh's class of 1954. Lewis' grandfather, Roy A. Lewis, who served as General Manager of the Bethlehem Steel plant for 28 years through World War II, was one of the early Bethlehem leaders in support of Lehigh wrestling. R.A. Lewis originated the "Lewis Dinner" held annually at the conclusion of each season in recognition of the wrestling team. ing interest in the success of Lehigh's wrestling program. I am pleased and proud to serve as chairman of such an important effort associated with the future of this program," says Lewis. The campaign target has been set at $2.7 million, and combined with currently available endowments of $1.1 million will fully fund eight non-need-based full scholarships. "Al Lewis brings strong leadership to a campaign that is geared to raise endowed funding to preserve an important Lehigh tradition," explains Likins. "Just as important is that increases in endowment in support of wrestling will actually free up money that will be used for our general scholarship needs." "This is an exciting time for wrestling at Lehigh," explains Joe Sterrett, "Our family has had a long-stand- Lehigh's assistant vice president and di- Lehici schol I uhtyh I nivcr MgrMlL'ilftAi. "We care deeply about preserving and enhancing traditions of excellence, particularly those where national distinction has been earned. The wrestling program is one of those traditions, and this campaign will help to preserve that excellence without increasing costs," Sterrett adds. Lehigh University's Board of Trustees approved moving forward with the wrestling scholarship plan at its January 18th meeting earlier this year. That announcement was made by board chairman Lehigh wrestling coach torn Hutchinson, the 1991-92 captains, Solomon Fleckman and Matt Ruppel, and Alvin B. Lewis will chair a campaign committee with the charge of raising the funds needed to endow the scholarships. "Al Lewis, his father, and his grandfather have had a long history of being around Lehigh wrestling," said Lehigh wrestling coach Tom Hutchinson. "I think it's only fitting that the Lewis family chairs the drive. Given the number of people who have supported us through the good times and the bad, I really believe the drive will be successful." Women's soccer becomes Beginning with the 1991 fall season, Lehigh University will field a Division I women's soccer team which will compete in the Patriot League. The announcement was made by Joe Sterrett, Director of Athletics, in concert with a Lehigh University Board of Trustees meeting on April 6. Women's soccer will become the twenty-third intercollegiate sport at the University and the first to be added since women's indoor track and field began competition during the 1987-88 season. "We are all very excited at Lehigh about adding women's soccer to our intercollegiate sports program," Sterrett said. "We have been competing on the club level for many years and we feel that this is the perfect time for Lehigh to elevate women's soccer to the varsity level. The sport has seen tremendous growth on our campus and in the Patriot League as well as nationally among colleges and universities." A recent study by the NCAA backs Sterrett's comments as women's soccer has shown the second largest increase in women's sports nationally among Division I schools trailing only volleyball. Women's soccer has competed at the club level for the last two years at Lehigh. Lehigh will be one of six schools competing in the Patriot League with Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross and Lafayette also fielding squads. Unlike the past season when an in-season championship was awarded, the Patriot League will conduct a post season tournament next year. The addition of women's soccer brings the number of Patriot League sports Lehigh sponsors to 11 men's and 11 women's. The wrestling team competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. In addition to the five league contests, the Engineers will also play 10 non-league games including area contests against Muhlenberg, LaSalle, Temple and Pennsylvania. All home games will be played on the Goodman Campus. ' • ■'' ■-" * ''■' ■ ■ -,|,J ■»:;,-;. ■ i inil
