Crusaders' skillful attack stuns Lehigh By MEGAN CULHANE South Mountaineer Editor WORCESTER, MASS - Holy Cross quarterback Jeff Wiley may not be one for the big play, but his short, steady passing spurts, coupled with the dashing abilities of a fullback by the name of Joe Segreti, were unstoppable last Saturday as Lehigh ventured into Crusader territory. The Brown and White bowed to Holy Cross, 48- 24, in a series that has been dominated by head coach Mark Duffner's potent squad since its inception in 1924. It was perhaps the most pivotal and emotional game of the season for Lehigh, which boasts its most potent team in years. The Brown and White surrendered two touchdowns to sophomore tailback Darin Cromwell and Photography by PAM LOTT Crusader Rob McGovern snags tailback Lee Blum. So far this season Blum has rushed for 105 yards. Segreti in the first quarter alone before kicker Erik Bird (Casselberry, Fla.) booted a 31 yard field goal to put Lehigh on the board in the second. No other opponent had scored on Lehigh in the first quarter this season. The Holy Cross offensive unit came out gunning with a combination of short, deadly passes and a balanced run which Lehigh never adjusted to. "That's their offense, run and shoot, although sometimes it may have looked like we'd never seen it before," head coach Hank Small said. "I was a little disappointed that people came so wide open a few times. It's one thing to get run over, its another thing to make it look like you don't know what you're doing. I felt there was an aspect of those kinds of breakdowns. "They have good athletes and obviously a sound plan," the third year coach continued. "When we could stay on schedule, down in distance and not have penalties, we could put together a balanced drive and go down the field. We were just beaten by a better football team." Quarterback Mark McGowan's (Essex Fells, N.J.) usual run-and-gun style was stifled Saturday by an unyielding Holy Cross defense. Although he owned an early second quarter score on a two-yard up and over, he was sacked four times and held to See FOOTBALL page 3 Netminder Lauer hangs tough in goal By HOPE GOLDHABER Sports Infomation Intern In her first season as goalie, junior Andrea Lauer led Lehigh's field hockey team to an East Coast Conference title. In that 1986 championship season, she allowed only 25 goals in 17 games (1.5 per game) and recorded a saves percentage of .769. She was credited with six shutouts and had six other games in Which opponents were limited to one marker. To top off a 14-7-1 season, the 1987 squad defeated Lafay ette, 5-0, and Delaware, 1 -0, as it carried home a conference title. To date this year, Lauer has recorded five shutouts, owns a saves percentage of .923. All this after a year-long rehabilitation program that saw her through two knee surgeries. Although statistics may indicate a brilliant goaltending career, Lauer chose the position on a whim one day.
