Lehigh overpowers Davidson 43-20 By MEGAN CULHANE South Mountaineer Editor DAVIDSON, N.C. - Erick Torain must be smiling by now. The sophomore running back from Harrisburg, Pa compiled 247 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 43-20 thrashing of Davidson at Richardson Field in North Carolina. It was the season opener for the Brown and White. Prior to last weekend's activities starting tailback Lee Blum (Staten Island NY), who led the nation in rushing last year, was still sidelined with a knee injury he suffered versus Delaware. There was the nagging question of who was capable of handling the responsibilities in his absence - no small shoes to fill. Torain's most notable play came in the fourth quarter when he returned a Chris Hardin punt 64 yards for a score. Photography by LISA MASSEY Lehigh fans Joanne and John Milnor '56 of Baltimore, M.D., travelled to North Carolina to show their support for the team. "I was a little nervous on the first carry," Torain said after the game. "But as the game went on I got into it more. Coach (Hank Small) gave me a lot of confidence.'' Small said the matchup was a perfect way to experiment with the strengths and depth of his squad. "I see a lot of good things coming out of this game," the third year coach said. "We've got a win under our belts. It was a chance for us to See FOOTBALL page 3 Season begins for three teams By HOPE GOLDHABER Sports Infomation Intern The Lehigh men's soccer team outmaneu- vered Lock Haven last Tuesday, 2-1, in their second game of the season at home. Senior Chris Hoffman (Colombia, Md.) scored the first goal off an assist by senior Chris Cameron (Melville, N.Y.). With 3:30 left in the first half, junior Kyle Boschen (Denville, NJ) took a feed from Hoffman and quickly put it in the net. Lehigh took seven shots and one coiner kick during the game and junior goalie Scott Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa.) protected the net with four saves. Their record now stands at 1-1. Carrying on the winning spirit, the Lehigh field hockey team shutout Ohio State Saturday in a 4-0 home match. Junior Carol Gibson (Factoryville, Pa.) scored three goals in the first half, assisted by junior Kim Brower (Madison, N.J.) on the first and third, and by junior Maggie Quinn (Sea Isle City, N.J.) on the second. Quinn scored an unassisted goal in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Lauer (Short Hills, N.J.) stopped all six shots for Lehigh. The junior forward from Factoryville, Pa. notched a hat trick in the field hockey team's home opener versus Ohio State last Saturday and; combined with junior Maggie Quinn's (Sea Isle City, NJ) unassisted score early in the second half, the squad shutout the Buckeyes 4-0. Lehigh is now 1-0 while Ohio State left 0-2. "They're a tough team," Gibson said after the game. "But I just don't think we gave mem any chance to show what they could do...but I guess that's good."
