Vol. 28—No. 14 JANUARY 7, 1986 BETHLEHEM, PA. Cagers Capture Five Straight Matmen Face Nation's Iron By JOHN MISSIMER '85 On the eve of its most difficult western swing in history, the wrestling team thumped Michigan, 26-18, before 1,250 in Stabler Center. Two days earlier the grapplers weren't as fortunate, as the Badgers of Wisconsin invaded Stabler and handed Thad Turner's team its first loss, 19-14. Prior to the Christmas recess, the Engineers manhandled Tennessee, 43-8, before a near- capacity crowd of 2,650 in Grace Hall. After looking sluggish against Wisconsin, the team looked very sharp in defeating Michigan. After freshman Rick Hartman (Lakewood, Ohio) was outpointed, 14-1, at 118 pounds, senior Mike Price (Blooms- bury, N.J.) put the Brown & White on the board with a 10-0 major decision over John Moore. Juniors Jim Frick (Columbia, N.J.) and Peter Yozzo (Sayville, N.Y.) and senior C.J. Mears (No. Canton, Ohio) recorded consecutive technical falls to put the Engineers on top, 22-5. Senior captain Paul Diekel (Whitehall, N.Y.) was the only other Lehigh wrestler to win, posting a 13-3 decision over Scott Rechsteiner, but the damage had already been done. Perhaps the evening's only disappointment came at heavyweight, where Bernie Brown met 1985 NCAA runner-up Kirk Trost. Last year in the dual meet at Ann Arbor, Brown lost, 7-6, in the last 10 seconds, and many of the fans were looking for the Bethlehem native to gain revenge. But it was not in the cards. Trost took Brown down to the mat in the first period, and went on to win easily, 11-3. Wisconsin employed a deliberate style to hand the grapplers their first loss in a very uneventful match. Even the premier bout, between Lehigh's All-American Peter Yozzo and 1985 NCAA 134- pound champion Jim Jordan, didn't live up to expectations. The two appeared to respect each other's abilities so much that each was reluctant to really tie it up. The bout ended in a 4-4 draw. The bright spot for the Engineers was Eyvind Boyesen (Kempton, Pa.) at 177 pounds. Boyesen posted an 8-7 victory over Ralph Liegel, who had been ranked as high as 4th by the National Mat News. 1st Such Streak Since'82; CBS Will Showcase Team (Photo by BERNHARD J. SUESS) VERNON DOSWELL (11) brings the ball upcourtonafast break as Daren Queenan (12) trails. Doswell, noted for his defensive play has provided the Engineers with an extra offensive punch. Other winners were Mears at 150, Diekel at 190, and Brown at heavyweight. Against Tennessee the mat- men dropped two of the first three bouts, but Yozzo got the ball rolling with a 20-7 win over Buzz Winchesky and the team captured the last seven bouts to cruise to the 43-8 win. Price, Chad Watkins (Ocean, N.J.), and Boyesen all had falls, and Brown won by a technical fall. Kerry Ritrievi (Levittown, Pa.) and Diekel chipped in with superior decisions, and Mears added a major decision to wrap up the scoring. NOTES: The team now embarks on its annual western (Continued on Page 2* By JOHN MISSIMER '85 Playing with poise and confidence, the men's basketball team has strung together five victories in a row for the first time since the 1981-82 season. Included are triumphs over Ivy League opponents Columbia and Harvard, and a win over East Coast Conference foe Drexel. It began back in December, when sophomore All-American Daren Queenan scored 18 second-half points to help bury Dickinson, 93-68. Queenan wound up with a game-high 26, shooting 12-for-16 from the floor. Sophomore Bill Cheslock (Hicksville, N.Y.) added 21 points and eight rebounds. After a three-week layoff, the hoopsters returned to Stabler Center to square off against Muhlenberg. The Mules gave the Engineers all they could handle before succumbing in the second half, 86-72. Senior co-captain Mike Androlewicz (Turnersville, N.J.) scored eight points during a ten-point Engineer run which broke open a 44-44 deadlock early in the second half. Androlewicz finished the evening with 22 points, tied for Engineer high-scorer honors with Queenan. Muhlenberg's Matt Women Hoopsters Continue Roll The women's basketball team continued its winning ways, with a victory over Robert Morris before the break, and two big wins over William & Mary and Yale following the New Year. Muffet McGraw's troops now stand at 7-2, and with just one game (against St. Francis) to go before the start of conference play, appear to be in good shape. Leading the way is a trio of seniors. Shawn Steward (Columbus, Ohio), the only woman in the history of Lehigh to score 1,000 points, is the leading scorer with 18.6 points per game. In the 77-68 victory over Robert Morris, Steward had a game-high 20 points on 5-for-10 from the floor, and a perfect 10- for-10 from the foul line. Senior co-captain Liz Feely (Worcester, Mass.) may soon join Steward in the exclusive 1,000-point club. This year Fee- ley is averaging 14.7 points per game, and her consistent play has been a factor in the team's success. Feeley was tied with Steward for leading-scorer honors in the 74-51 blow-out of William & Mary. Each tallied 16. Against Yale, Feeley's 14 points spearheaded a well- balanced attack which led to a 64-45 pasting of the Eli. The playmaker on this year's squad is Cathy Engelbert (Collingswood, N.J.). Also a standout in lacrosse, Engelbert is third on the team in scoring (13.9), and first in assists. Against Robert Morris she had 15 points, and against William & Mary and Yale had 14 and 13 points. Another starter who has played well is sophomore Jessica Lofgren (Oak Park, 111.). Lofgren is averaging 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest. Her strong performances have been a help, especially since sophomore center Mary Kush (Pringle, Pa.) has been absent since the opening game with a stress fracture in her foot. Kush is expected to return to the lineup in the next few weeks. The final starting position has been shared by junior Cathy Laydon (New Haven, Conn.) and freshman Bernadette Kozlowski (Factoryville, Pa.). Laydon is a physical player who provides a solid defensive effort. Kozlowski is a 6-0 center who is more of a finesse player. In the win over Robert Morris Kozlowski played 27 minutes and scored 13 points. (Continued on Page 2) German led all scorers with 23 points. Cheslock tallied 19 points and had 13 rebounds. Next on the agenda for first- year head coach Fran McCaffery's legions was a meeting with the Lions of Columbia. Seeking revenge for a 53-47 overtime defeat last year in Stabler Center, the cagers The men's basketball team will be the subject of a special feature on CBS television, Saturday, Jan. 11, from coast to coast. The segment will air at halftime of one of the games CBS will telecast that day. Be sure to watch as the Engineers are showcased on national network television. accomplished the seemingly impossible. For the first time in 17 years, they defeated an Ivy opponent, upending the Lions, 90-84, on their home court. This time the hero was senior Vernon Doswell (Somerset, N.J.). Doswell, who earlier in the year tied a Stabler record for points in a game by a Lehigh player, sank 11 of his first 12 shots from the floor, and six of seven from the foul line to account for his game-high 28 points. Androlewicz had 22 points and Queenan 18. The Engineers took the lead for good with 5:10 left in the first half. Now the team was ready to begin defense of its conference title, and the first victim was Drexel. Using a well-balanced attack, the Engineers wore down the Dragons with effective defense to coast to a 79-66 win. The margin of victory is a little deceiving, since the Brown & White watched a 39-36 halftime lead evaporate into a 45-39 Drexel advantage early in the second half. McCaffery called for a timeout to regroup, and the Engineers charged back to regain the lead at 13:37 as Androlewicz canned both ends of a one-and-one. The final ten minutes were all Lehigh, as the Engineers pulled away down the stretch. Setting the pace was Queenan with 17 points, and Androlewicz (Continued "on Page 2)
