Vol. 28—No. 2 SEPTEMBER 23, 1985 BETHLEHEM, PA. Huskies' Bite Bad As Bark (B&W photo by BILL WILSON) KEVIN MITCHELL (99) AND LOU SOFIANAKOS (55) attempt to put a halt to the scrambling of UCONN quarterback Peter Lane (11). A strong defensive effort in the final quarter kept Lehigh in the game. Lehigh University ;: L?J Richard Gibney Director of Athletics Dear Friend of Lehigh Athletics: We are pleased to announce the first annual Lehigh University Golf Classic, to be held at the Saucon Valley Country Club on Friday, Oct. 11. Our goal is to generate $20,000 to augment our football and basketball recruiting budgets, to help make these programs more competitive. Keith Rust, Class of '57, and Joe Workman, Class of '53, are the co-chairmen of this important event. We have scheduled the golf outing with the idea that you would participate in the fun-filled golf day on Friday, and stay over to see the exciting football game against the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, Oct. 12. The cost for participation is $200 per player. Included in the cost are lunch, a round of golf on one of the country's best courses, cart, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, two football tickets, and a chance to win valuable raffle prizes. Among the prizes are a trip to Scotland, donated by the Lehigh Alumni Assn., golf clubs, a golf bag, putter, golf balls, umbrella and many others. In addition to participants, we are looking for hole sponsors at $500 per hole. $500 sponsors will receive lunch, golf, cart, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, football tickets, and a room for two at the Hotel Bethlehem for the night of Oct. 11. Participants and sponsors will receive recognition in our football and basketball game programs. If you cannot join us for the full spectrum of activities, you are encouraged to attend the cocktail party at a cost of $100 per person. If you are unable to attend either the golf outing or the reception, your donation will be greatly appreciated. We need your help to upgrade our programs, will enable us to do that. Your contribution Lunch will be served at 11:15 a.m. Friday, followed by a shotgun start at 12:15. The post-golf reception will begin at 5:00 p.m., featuring brief remarks by our football and basketball coaches. Awarding of prizes and the raffle drawing will begin at 6:00 p.m. Space is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first- served basis. I look forward to seeing you on the 11th. If you have any questions, please call me at (215) 861-4320. Thanks for your support! Sincerely, Dick Gibney Director of Athletics Fourth-Quarter Turnovers Kill Engineer Comeback By JOHN MISSIMER '85 The script was perfect, except no one told the Lehigh football team that the ending had been changed. After seven straight defeats to the Engineers, the University of Connecticut finally got the monkey off its back, handing the Brown and White a 28-24 loss before a Volunteer Day crowd of 9,500 in Taylor Stadium. It appeared the Engineers were going to pull out another come-from-behind victory, but the Lehigh offense sputtered in the fourth quarter, driving as far as the UConn 13, 18, and 15- yard lines without being able to put any points on the board. Trailing only 28-22 with 9:26 left in the game, the Engineers took control of the ball on their own 29 and marched to the Husky 13. Marty Horn's (Short Hills, N.J.) 21-yard completion to senior flanker Todd Melton (Berlin, N.J.) was the big play. The drive stalled, however, as Horn faded back on third-and- eight and delivered the ball right into the arms of Husky strong safety Scott Daniels. Lehigh got the ball back two plays later, when junior Matt Cichocki (East Greenville, Pa.) returned the favor by picking off a Peter Lane pass onthe UConn 24. Once again the offense couldn't move the ball, as a penalty nullified a completion to Melton which would have turned fourth-and-four from the 18 into a first down deep in Husky territory. When the play was run over, Horn overthrew Melton in the end zone, and Lehigh gave up the ball on downs. Cichocki came up with another clutch play, pouncing on a Lane fumble at the 23, and the Engineers had one more opportunity at taking the lead. Horn completed his first pass to junior tight end Randy Miller (Robesonia, Pa.), but on second-and-two from the 15 was intercepted once again. Mike McNamara made the theft for Connecticut. The Engineer defense, playing an excellent fourth quarter after allowing three third- quarter touchdowns, pushed the Huskies back to their own 2- yard line. Punter Jim Carriere stepped out of the end zone to give Lehigh a safety and two points, in order to avoid booting from so deep in Husky ground. UConn took a free kick with 1:51 remaining. Sophomore Sean Pitzer (Dal- lastown, Pa.) who returned the second half kickoff 42 yards to set up the touchdown that gave Lehigh its only lead, brought the ball back to the Lehigh 43, but a clipping penalty put the Engineers back on their own 20, and when Melton fumbled a Horn pass and Jerry Mcintosh recovered with 1:11 left, Connecticut had its second win against the Engineers in nine tries, and its (Continued on Page 2) UConn 28, Lehigh 24 Connecticut 7 0 21 0 -28 Penalty Yards 86 71 LEHIGH 0 7 7 10 —24 Punts 6 6 Attendance: 9.500 Avg.Distance 35 41 C—Lane 16 run first.
