Vol. 28 — No. 10 NOVEMBER 18, 1985 BETHLEHEM, PA. Engineers Shut Out Bucknell (B&W Photo by BILL WILSON) LEE BLUM surges through the Bucknell line. Blum rushed for 189 yards in the rain and mud to record the best performance by an Engineer back since Rod Gardner against Colgate in 1973. Lehigh University ? [2J % Richard Gibney Director of Athletics Taylor Gymnasium 38 Bethlehem. Pennsylvania 1S015 Telephone (215) 861-4320 November 18, 1985 Dear Lehigh Supporters: On behalf of Lehigh's department of athletics, I would like to express my deep appreciation to you for your support of the first annual Lehigh University Golf Classic. Thanks to your help, we were able to meet our goal of generating $20,000 to assist our recruiting efforts. Ninety-six (96) people participated in the golf fund-raiser October 11. In addition, many former athletes and friends sent contributions in support of the event, although they could not attend. Other contributors didri't play golf, but joined us for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at Saucon Valley. Nine individuals sent contributions of $500 each to sponsor holes and many hotels, restaurants, etc., sent raffle gifts totaling $5,000. In retrospect, I believe that everyone enjoyed the day, i.e., luncheon, playing on one of the best golf courses in the country, and all had fun during the reception/raffle session which followed the outing. As a result, we have begun to improve the appearance of our office and reception area with some of the money donated in the golf fund-raiser. 'Our offices have been painted, new rugs and lights installed, and new furniture is on order. The physical appearance of the athletic facilities has a very positive impact on recruiting. Just as important, our coaches will have larger recruiting budgets thanks to your generous contributions. Thanks again for helping make the first annual Lehigh University Golf Classic a success. We look forward to next year's event with the hope that we can improve on this year's fund-raising effort to assist our program. Please mark down Friday, October 10, 1986, on your calendar for the second annual Golf Classic, and plan on staying over for our football game with William & Mary the next day. Best regards. Sincerely, Dick Gibney Director of Athletics P.S. Gus Riemondy, Class of '41, was the winner of the biggest raffle prize, the trip to Scotland. Blum Rushes For 189 Yards; Defense Limits Foes To 146 By JOHN MISSIMER '85 On a gridiron that resembled a lake more than a football field, the Engineers splashed their way to a 19-0 win over Bucknell, before 1,100 fans at Lewisburg's Memorial Stadium. A constant, cold rain did not slow offensive stars Marty Horn and Lee Blum. Horn (Short Hills, N.J.) helped stake Lehigh to a 17-0 halftime lead by completing 12 of 13 aerials, including touchdown passes of 26 yards to Rennie Benn (Short Hills, N.J.) and four yards to Todd Melton (Berlin, N.J.) Blum (Staten Island, N.Y.) gained an eye-popping 189 yards on the ground, 108 in the second half, helping the Engineers control the ball, the clock and their lead. Nor did the conditions deter a swarming, intense defensive unit which held the Bison to a net total of 10 rushing yards and just 136 yards through the air. Led by tackle Jim Rovito (Kulp- mont, Pa.) and nose guard Wes Walton (Closter, N.J.), the Engineer defense sacked Bucknell quarterback Jim Given six times for losses totaling 45 yards. Furthermore, strong safety Steve Apa (Camp Hill, Pa.) picked off a Given aerial, and tackle Mike Kosko (Susquehanna, Pa.) snared the bedeviled Bucknell signal-caller in his own end zone for a fourth- quarter safety. The whitewash was Lehigh's first in 46 games, since the Engineers shut out Bucknell, 18-0, Oct. 24, 1981. The contest's themes were established in this march. Horn completed three passes (he hit his first 10 in a row), and Blum carried four times for 30 yards, including a 17-yard jaunt on his first try, and a key pickup of six yards when Lehigh faced third-and- two at the Bison 32. Lehigh's next drive, crowned by Horn's touchdown strike to Melton, was more of the same. Horn clicked on four passes, including a 20-yard swing pass to fullback John Tamburo (Baldwin, N.Y.) that moved the Engineers to the Bucknell 3. Blum carried five times, keeping the drive going with a gain of just enough on a fourth-and-two play at the Bucknell 30. Meanwhile the defense shut the Bison down. Bucknell did not post a first down until well into the second period, and was allowed just nine all day. The Bisons' best drive of the first half ended in frustration. Apa intercepted his first pass of the year to stifle Bucknell after a fake punt netted the Bison a 14-yard gain on fourth-and- three at the Lehigh 48. A 32-yard field goal by Mike Beattie (Danbury, Conn.) capped an Engineer drive following the interception. Blum netted 40 yards on five carries, while Horn completed three of four passes, the key a 7-yarder to split end Greg Casten (Wexford, Pa.) on fourth-and-four at the Bison 29.
