Beattie, Banco Kick Hens Gridders Edge Delaware On llth-Hour Field Goal (B&W Photo by BILL WILSON) RUNNING BACK ROGER FAISON (25) takes a handoff from Marty Horn (7) and high steps into the Delaware line. Faison spearheaded a strong Lehigh running attack which gained 156 yards on the afternoon. Varsity Sports Week Four Straight for Soccer Team The soccer team continued its climb back to the .500 mark, trimming ECC rival Towson State, 1-0. In other action, the field hockey team tied Hofstra, 2-2, and lost to Delaware, 4-0. The women's cross country team lost to West Chester and Delaware. In volleyball the spikers downed Delaware, 3-1, and won two and lost two at the LaSalle tournament. In a contest marred by temper flare-ups, the Engineers scored the game's only goal after Towson goalie Chris Delpi was issued a red card and ejected from the game. Senior Jeff Shiner (Landisville, Pa.) converted on a penalty kick at the 73:29 mark. The win was the Engineers' fourth straight, and»seottnd in the ECC. With four games to play the booters' record is 5-7-1 overall, 2-3 in the conference. Eric Sejourne (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded his fourth straight shutout in the goal for Lehigh. Last week, Sejourne was tabbed as the ECC Co- Player of the Week for his efforts against Rider and Wilkes. In the Hofstra field hockey game, Engineer goals were scored by sophomore Carla Juliani (Collingswood, N.J.) and freshman Jennifer McElw- reath (Pompton Plains, N.J.). Cheryl Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.) assisted on McElwreath's goal. Goalie Patti Lee (Cran- ford, N.J.) saved 19 shots. For head coach Tubby Raymond and his Delaware team, it was a day to forget. Beattie, a sophomore from Danbury, Conn, kicked three field goals, including a 35- yarder with 41 seconds remaining in the game to give Lehigh a come-from-behind 16-14 victory over Delaware. Beattie was only one-half of an Engineer kicking game that stole the spotlight. The other star was punter Steve Banco (West Lawn, Pa.), who consistently sent the Blue Hens reeling deep into their own territory. Banco punted seven times for an incredible 49.1 average. Other bright spots for the Engineers included the defense, which was strengthened by the return of Jim Rovito, and the running of Roger Faison and Marty Horn. Faison, a senior from New York, N.Y. playing in only the second game of his varsity career, carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards and one touchdown, all in the second half. For the Blue Hens it was a third straight frustrating defeat at the hands of the Engineers. It was the seventh time in the past nine meetings that Lehigh has beaten the Hens. It didn't appear as though Lehigh would have a chance early in the game, as a fired-up Delaware squad, determined to atone for a 46-6 humbling last season in Taylor Stadium, Delaware 14 Penalty Yards 50 42 Punts 7 9 Avg. On its first possession, Delaware drove to the Engineer 25, but John Gasson's 42-yard field goal attempt was wide to the right. Later in the quarter, Delaware took advantage of a bad snap on a field goal try by Lehigh to take over on its own 46. Seven plays later Ron James hauled in a 13-yard Rich Gannon pass all alone in the right flat for a Blue Hen touchdown. Gasson added the extra point and Delaware led 7-0. Lehigh was again able to drive into Blue Hen territory, but this time the Engineers were turned away when Matt Haudenschield picked off a Horn pass on the 18-yard line. This interception led to the second Hen touchdown, as Delaware drove 82 yards on 12 plays, with Gannon scampering the final seven for the score. Gasson added the PAT and the score was 14-0 with 12:21 to play in the second quarter. Sophomore cornerback Clifton Hubbard (Philadelphia, Pa.) came out of nowhere to pick off a Gannon pass and return the ball 21 yards to the Delaware 44 to set up Beattie's first field goal. With only 1:46 before intermission Beattie split the uprights from 29 yards out to put the Engineers on the board. Lehigh got the ball one more time before heading into the locker room, but Horn's "hail mary" was plucked from the air by Delaware's Phil Altwell on the Engineer five to end the half. A determined Lehigh squad emerged in the second half. Mixing it up well, the offense drove 79 yards to paydirt. Key plays were runs of 13 and nine yards by freshman tailback Lee Blum (StatenIsland,N.Y.),and Horn completions to tight end Randy Miller (15 yards) and Todd Melton (14). Horn also demonstrated his ability to scramble out of the pocket as he rambled 10 yards to the Hen 30 during the drive. Enter Faison, who has been hampered by injuries throughout four years at Lehigh. Faison sprinted 16 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown to complete the drive. Beattie converted his 19th straight PAT of the season to draw the Engineers within striking distance. Now the defense and Banco took over. In the second half, Banco recorded punts of 52, 55, 51 and 61 yards. The high sailing (Continued on Page '£)
