Lax Wins NCAA First Round Vol. 26 — No. 24 MAY 11, 1984 BETHLEHEM, PA. Edged in ECC Finale Baseball Thrills Home Crowd Women Stop Loyola, 11-10, Face No. 1 Maryland Next It's enough to shatter the nerves. The women's lacrosse team, after losing the East Coast Conference (ECC) title game to Delaware, still earned a berth in the 12-team NCAA national championship tournament, and this is a team of quality and guts. In the opening round of the national tourney, the Engineers downed Loyola Wednesday by 11-10 in sudden-death overtime, to advance to Saturday's (May 12) quarter-final round. Senior Terese Cuff (Chadds Ford, Pa.) nailed down the game-winner after 1:38 of sudden-death, assisted by sophomore Cathy Engelbert (Collingswood, N.J.). Leading the way for Engineers were Karen Denmark (Moorestown, N. J.), four goals; Karyn Yost (Northwoods, Pa.), three goals; and Cheryl Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.), two goals and three assists. Lehigh will travel to the University of Maryland to take on the Terrapins, the nation's top ranked team, in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal round of the ECC tourney, Lehigh downed Lafayette for the second time this year, 7-5. Yost and Sue VanWagenen (Rye, N.Y.) each had two goals, while Miller, Denmark and Engelbert added one each. Goalie Patti Lee (Cran- ford, N.J.) recorded 15 saves. She had eight stops in the Loyola game. Delaware prevailed over Lehigh in the title game for the second year in a row, but the score was not as close as last season's 9-8 overtime count. The Blue Hens won by 10-5, making Lehigh's comeback against Loyola all the more dramatic and admirable. In the contest, Yost was the undisputed star, with three tallies and one assist. Three members of the team, Yost and defensive standouts Sue Coursen (Collingswood, N.J.) and co-captain Kathy Zeberlein (Cherry Hill, N.J.) were voted to the ECC all-star team. This is the second straight all-ECC honor for Yost and Coursen. Men Take ECC Tennis Crown Led by singles champions Eric Galcher (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Richard Katsoff (Yonkers, N.Y.), Lehigh captured the team crown at the East Coast Conference (ECC) men's tennis championships, held April 27-29 at Towson State. It was Lehigh's first ECC team title. Coached by Kevin Kopp, '82, Lehigh amassed 29 points to second-place Towson's 21V2. Lafayette placed third (17>/2), Bucknell fourth (14) and Delaware fifth (13). Hofstra was sixth (9V2), American seventh (8), Rider eighth (IV2), and Drexel last (V2). Galcher, the top seed, defeated Gary Schmidt of Hofstra, 7-6, 6-1, to take the title in No. 2 singles. Galcher teamed with David Smith (Middletown, N.J.) to capture the crown at No. 2 doubles. Katsoff ousted top seed Rob Lyles of Lafayette, 6-4, 6-4, to win the championship at No. 5 singles. Katsoff was seeded second. It was so sad. It was electrifying and wrenching. Lehigh's greatest baseball season ever culminated in an unforgettable series of games in the East Coast Conference tournament, at the Murray H. Goodman Campus May 5-7. Those who were there on the final day will never forget the stunning Engineer comeback, an awesome Lumber Company assault which seemed to give Lehigh the ballgame and the ECC title; but which was not enough, as Rider made a comeback of its own in the bottom of the ninth inning, to wrest away the crown, 14-13. THE HEART-STOPPING championship game featured many scenes like this as the Engineers battled back with some heavy lumber. Second Annual Boat Trip To Navy Annapolis, Md. will be bursting at its collective seams on the weekend of the Lehigh-Navy football game on Oct. 13,1984. The reason is the renowned annual Boat Show which is expected to draw as many as 500,000 additional tourists to the harbor. Therefore, the Lehigh Home Club and the Alumni Association are issuing a traveller's advisory—that the best way to attend this year's Navy football game will be via the 2nd Lehigh Boat Trip. In an effort to double last year's pleasure (and avoid traffic jams in Annapolis), two ships will cruise from Baltimore Harbor to Annapolis on Saturday morning, Oct. 13. One hundred hotel rooms are now available at the Baltimore Hilton (301-752-1100), the comfortable lst-class hotel used last year ($50 single, $65 double). Also, 100 suites (converted apts.) at Tremont Plaza (call 215-437- 6095 for reservations). . . $60 Corporate Suite, $70 Executive Suite. The Hyatt Regency (right across from our Boat dock) has rooms in the $110 range (301-528-1234). Departure is from the Inner Harbor Saturday morning, with return by 10 p.m. the same day. Hotel rooms should be booked directly with the hotels, while boat reservations may be made by mailing checks (payable to Lehigh University) at $60 each to the Lehigh University Alumni Association, Alumni Building #27, Bethlehem, PA 18015. The package includes $12 football ticket, round-trip boat fare, lunch and dinner, open bar and music en route home. Call 215-861-4682 with any questions. Lehigh fell behind in the title contest by 10-3 after three innings, and the mood of the big crowd at the diamond was dour. But this Engineer squad, which finished at 20-9, with a shiny new school record for wins in a season, never quit all year, and they let the bats do the talking, scoring one run in the fourth, and four each in the fifth and sixth, to take a 12-10 lead. The place went nuts. Lehigh batters clouted everything, it seemed, to the far reaches of the yard, or clean out of it. In the fourth: a home run by right fielder Ross Brinley (New Cumberland, Pa.). In the fifth: four runs, five hits, including triples by third baseman Mike Matto (Stanton, N.J.) and left fielder Scott Fegely (Allentown, Pa.). In the sixth: four runs, four hits, including two 2-run homers, by Brinley again and center fielder Jeff Onorato (Paramus, N.J.), and another triple by Matto. The Engineers added a run in the top of the ninth to make it 13-11, and were within three outs of grabbing the title and sending the crowd into pandemonium. But Rider bravely whacked two singles and a double, and that was that. While they did not win the tournament crown, and very likely will not advance into the NCAA tournament, the 1984 Engineers distinguished themselves as a skilled and determined bunch — all heroes, really. It's easy enough to forget, in the afterglow of the final game's excitement, that Lehigh got to the title tilt by beating, for the third time this year, none other than Lafayette. The Engineers thumped the Leopards, 12-2, in the tourney's opening round. Jon Mark (Stroudsburg, Pa.), an intelligent and dependable hurler, went the distance, running his record to 7-3. Second baseman Pete D'Agostino (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored four runs. The Engineers' next victim was defending-champion Delaware. The high-flying Blue Hens, who clawed Rider, 12-0, in the first round, were brought to (Continued on Page 2)
