Lehigh, Third In EIWA Meet, Qualifies Four For Nationals Santoro, Reilly And Diekel Win Titles; Yozzo Second JIM REILLY RICH SANTORO PAUL DIEKEL Women Ready For Playoffs Shawn Steward and Ellen Silver led the Lehigh women's basketball team to a 75-64 victory over Bucknell as the Engineers ended their regular schedule with a 13-and-8 record, 4-and-4 in the East Coast Conference. Steward, of Columbus, OH, led the scorers with 22 points and added 10 rebounds and nine assists. Silver, of Hazlet, NJ, had 17 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Patti Cut- Johnny Engel was Lehigh's first NCAA mat champion. ting, of Rockville, MD, contributed 12 points. The team moves into ECC playoffs Thursday (March 1) at Rider. Four Lehigh wrestlers, three of them crowned EIWA champions last weekend and one of them a runnerup, will represent the Engineers in the NCAA championships March 8-9-10 at The Meadowlands, East Rutherford, NJ. They earned their berths in the 80th EIWA tournament, held at the Naval Academy, in which Lehigh placed third behind first-place Navy and second- place Syracuse. Rich Santoro, of Bethlehem, PA, won at 126 pounds. Jim Reilly, of North Wales, PA, took the 167-pound EIWA title and Paul Diekel, of Whitehall, NY, was first at 190. Peter Yozzo, of Sayville, NY, was second at 142. Lehigh's only other place- winner in the EIWAs was Bernie Brown, of Bethlehem, PA, fourth at heavyweight. The first three finishers in each weight class qualify for the Nationals. Failing to place more than' five men, including Brown and the four finalists, was responsible for the Engineers' drop from first to third place in the EIWA standings. Somehow he missed out in the Outstanding Wrestler voting to 142-pound winner John Orr of EIWA TV Sunday WLVT, Ch. 39 of the Lehigh Valley, will telecast the final round of the EIWA tournament Sunday (Mar. 4) at 11 a.m. ♦Selected by EIWA coaches as "wild card" entry into NCAA Tournament. Princeton despite his two falls, a 13-11 victory over Navy star Jim Reich in the semis and a 9-1 triumph over Mike DeGenova of Temple in the finals. The edge over Reich came in the tourney's top bout, for Lehigh spectators, as he mauled the Middie star in the third period to overcome a 7-2 deficit. It was a disappointing weekend for coach Thad Turner and his squad, finishing behind two teams which they recently had defeated in dual meets. It started badly, with 158-pounder Tom Toggas of York, PA, withdrawn by the Engineers at the last minute because of a skin infection, and it didn't get a whole lot better. Damian Butler, 118-pounder from Cincinnati, OH, didn't make weight Saturday. Brian Yates, 134-pounder from Clarksboro, NJ, seeded No. 1 in his division, was upset in the quarterfinals and again in the first round of consolations. Toggas, after receiving clearance from a physician at Annapolis, and from Naval Academy doctors, to compete, was lifted following a phone call from a Bethlehem physician who received test results Friday and contacted Turner at the field house.
