Santoro (Bethlehem, Pa.) placed fifth at 126. It was the third time the co-captain has made Ail-American. Santoro, the 1983 and 1984 EIWA champion, ends his Lehigh career with an overall mark of 60-19. Diekel (Whitehall, N.Y.) fin ished sixth at 190, earning All- America honors for the first time. Diekel recorded Lehigh's only pin of the tourney, decking Weber State's Ryan Western at 6:10 in the first round. Diekel also suffered Lehigh's only fall, to Nebraska's Bill Scherr, the No. 1 seed and eventual champion, at 4:59 of their quarterfinal bout. Publication resumes April 9. Dennis Diehl, assistant executive director of the Lehigh Alumni Assn., which publishes The South Mountaineer, announces that beginning with next September's issues all subscriptions will be handled on a paid basis only. Previously alumni have been able to receive the paper free, through second-class mailing, or first-class mailing if they wished to pay that cost. Less than satisfactory second-class postal service and a need to offset some of the publication costs were cited among reasons for the change. The Alumni Association's Board of Directors now will offer a subscription rate of $10 for one year, or $27 for a three-year period. Forms to subscribe will appear in the issues of May 7 and May 14, last of the 1983-84 series. No renewals will be accepted by phone but questions regarding subscriptions may be phoned to Diehl at 861-3136, area code 215. U.S.A. vs. Bulgaria April 3 Coca-Cola of the Lehigh Valley has announced it will sponsor the Coca-Cola Olympic Challenge Match between a USA wrestling team and the Bulgarian Olympic team at 8 p.m. Apr. 3 in Stabler Center. Richard Strain, president of the Lehigh Valley-based bottling company says: "We are committed to supporting our local Olympic hopefuls by providing them with the best international competition prior to the final trials." The Bulgarian team has seven reigning medalists from the 1983 world championships. "In fact," he adds, "the preliminary match Apr. 3 at 6 p.m. between Lehigh Valley and New Jersey junior freestyle teams also will be a good one featuring many of the best high school wrestling stars from the Valley and nearby New Jersey area." Headliners in the main event will be Easton native Bobby Weaver, 1979 World Cup champion (105.5) and former Lehigh teammate Darryl Burley, a 1979 and 1983 NCAA champion. Mark Lieberman, another ex-Lehigh champion and an ABC radio network commenter for the '84 Games, believes both are top candidates to make the Olympic Team and win gold medals. "Weaver is clearly a favorite to make the U.S. team," he says, "because Bobby has defeated the reigning gold medalist from the Soviet Union." Lieberman also adds while Burley is in the most competitive weight class in the U.S., Olympic Coach Dan Gable believes Burley has great potential for international success because of an important victory over '83 World champion Victor Alexeev of the Soviet Union. Coca-Cola of the Lehigh Valley will distribute complimentary student tickets to the Olympic Challenge Match. They will be mailed to wrestlers throughout the Lehigh Valley to ensure that they will be able to see this outstanding pre- Olympic matchup. In addition to Weaver and Burley, other U.S. Team members include former Lehigh All-Americans Pete Schuyler and Colin Kilrain in addition to current Lehigh wrestlers Rich Santoro, Jim Reilly and Paul Diekel. This week marks the beginning of the spring season, with several teams already under way. The baseball team, coming off an 18-12 campaign, dropped its first two contests, to Armstrong State College of Savannah, Ga., by scores of 14-9 and 8-6. The diamond squad belted five home runs in the twin bill, including a grand slam and a solo shot by sophomore Mark Zlock (Newton, Pa.) in game two. The team will complete a 10-game southern swing March 19 at Navy. Also on spring trips are the following squads: golf (in North Carolina); men's tennis (one match at Towson State, followed by five in Virginia); women's tennis (three matches in Florida); and track (in Bermuda). Men's tennis downed Towson, 6-3. Men's lacrosse opens its campaign March 14 at Salisbury (Md.) State, while the women's squad hosts Towson State March 24. The Softball team debuts in a home contest March 20 against Muhlenberg. Women's Basketball 13-9 Lehigh's women's basketball team completed a winning season on a disappointing note, bowing 77-73 to American in the first round of the East Coast Conference playoffs. The squad had a 13-and-9 record, 4-and-5in the league. Against American the Engineers fell far behind, rallied to tie at 45-45, then lost as center Ellen Silver of Hazlet, N.J., and guard Patti Cutting of Rock- ville, Md. ran into foul trouble. The Eagles regained control of the game and nailed down the victory as Silver, after sitting out eight minutes, fouled out with four minutes left and Cutting followed two minutes later. Shawn Steward of Columbus, Oh., and Liz Feeley of Worcester, Ma., paced Lehigh with 16 points apiece and Cathryn Laydon, of Hamden, Ct, added 15.
