Published by the Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 26 - No. 3 SEPTEMBER 27, 1983 BETHLEHEM, PA. New Football Loop Proposed Navy Defense Stops Engineers Second Half Breakaway For Middies A rock-ribbed Navy defense dominated play last Saturday as the Middies handed Lehigh its first football shutout in 68 games before 23,000 fans at Annapolis, 30-0. The winners allowed the Engineers only seven first downs, two in the second half, 13 net yards rushing, intercepted five passes and recovered a fumble. Two long returns in the fourth quarter afforded Lehigh scoring opportunities but the Navy defenders managed to keep the door tightly shut. The first came as Mike Lippincott of Easton, PA, ran 59 yards with an intercepted pass to the Middie 20. Four straight Engineer aerials were unsuccessful. The second came as Peter Schreck, of West Lawn, PA, returned a kickoff 54 yards to the Navy 28. Four plays later Lehigh relinquished the ball at the 32 on an interception. LU President, Ivy League Back Plan The presidents of Lehigh, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and William and Mary have announced that discussions are moving forward on the possible formation of a new football league, to be called the Colonial League. It is anticipated that such a league would be associated with the Ivy League, including inter- league football scheduling agreements. The purpose of the new league would be to bring together a group of institutions of higher learning which enjoy comparable academic standards of admission and achievement, as well as historically long commitments to intercollegiate athletics. The league has been actively advanced by Lehigh President Peter Likins, whose recent experience as Columbia provost encouraged him in October of 1982 to propose the idea of this new league as a "sister" to the Ivy League, with intersecting schedules. Dr. Likins sees in the Colonial League an opportunity to advance the highest principles of intercollegiate athletics while at the same time streng- (Continued on Page 2) Soccer Victory Brothers Jeff and Kevin Remley, of Fleetwood, PA, notched goals as the Lehigh soccer team defeated Swarthmore, 3-1.
