It was the 119th game of the most-played rivalry in college football and the Engineers made it a stirring climax to a memorable Centennial Season which also included victories over Army, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Bucknell, Northeastern and East Stroudsburg. Losses came against Navy, Colgate and New Hampshire. Lehigh left the field with an 8-and-3 record against a blockbuster schedule, taking the last five games in a row and seven of the last eight. Lafayette, with an offense ranked very high nationally in the 1-AA division, had to settle for 6-and-5. Horn pulled the trigger Basketball Saturday Lehigh's winter sports season claims the spotlight this weekend as men's and women's basketball teams open their schedules. The men have a home attraction Saturday afternoon (11/26) against Kutztown in Stabler Center at 3 o'clock, marking the debut of Tom Schneider as head coach. The women are at Princeton Friday (11/25) for a 7 p.m. opener. Their first home game is Saturday, Dec. 3, in Grace Hall against Navy at 1 p.m. (B&W Photo by BILL WILSON) MARTY HORN Horn Selected Lehigh quarterback Marty Horn was voted Most Valuable Player by members of the news media covering the 1983 game. against Lafayette but it was the Engineer defense which loaded the gun. All-American linebacker John Shigo of Bethlehem, PA, corner back Blair Talmadge of Philadelphia, PA, tackle Kevin Zlock of Newton, PA, end Scott Theuerkauf of Demarest, NJ, and nose guard Wes Walton of Closter, NJ, made the big plays which doomed the Leopards. Lehigh's first touchdown was the result of a 9-play, 44-yard drive in the opening quarter with Horn, of Short Hills, NJ, throwing the last 24 yards to wingback Jim Davidson of Selinsgrove, PA. Earlier in the march he had passed to tight end Jeff Hunt, of Nazareth, PA, for nine yards and to favorite receiver Rennie Benn, split end from Short Hills, NJ, for 13. This was an impressive drive, although there were a few yards lost on the ground, and the only one not set up by the defensive unit. And the "D" even can claim some credit for this one because two straight sacks by Theuerkauf cost the Leopards 15 yards, pushed them back to their 7-yard line, and forced a punt which gave Lehigh the ball in great field position for its touchdown march. Lehigh's later 16 points all came with direct assists from the defense. Toward the end of the second period, with the Engineers clinging to a 6-0 advantage, Shigo intercepted a pass and returned the ball 22 yards to the Lafayette 6-yard (Continued on Page 2) Matmen End Trials, Open Dec. 2 Lehigh wrestlers completed a pre-season intra-squad tournament (11/15) with their annual "wrestle-offs" for positions in the starting lineup. The results are not binding upon coach Thad Turner but he will have most of the trials winners in his lineup during the early-season meets. The regular schedule opens with Lehigh hosting the Sheridan Tournament in Stabler Center Dec. 2-3 against North Carolina State, Nebraska, Oregon State, Lock Haven State, Bloomsburg State, Trenton State and James Madison. The first dual meet is home Dec. 6 against Wilkes College. Co- captain Jim Reilly, who missed the trials recovering from knee surgery, hopes to return for the Sheridan Tournament. December 10-11 the Engineers are in the Lock Haven State Tournament, Lock Haven, PA, against Penn State, Maryland, Boston U., Michigan State, Ohio U., Slippery Rock State, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, West Chester State and the host Lock Haven matmen.
