Lehigh's football forces wiped out Bucknell last Saturday, 40- 15, scoring three touchdowns in a period of less than seven minutes during the first quarter. It was their fifth consecutive victory over the Bisons in a series dating back to 1888. Bucknell, which still leads the Engineers 23-22, with two ties, got on the board first before a Homecoming Day turnout of 6,500 but Lehigh countered with touchdowns on its first three possessions and coasted the rest of the way. The first came at 7:40 of the quarter as quarterback Marty Horn and split end Rennie Benn, the former Millburn, NJ, High School teammates from Short Hills, NJ, teamed up on a 72- yard scoring pass-run maneuver. Benn took the ball away from a defender at the Bucknell 40, stumbled a couple of times breaking free, and again near the goal line, but managed to get into the end zone. Lehigh kicked off, forced a return punt, and took over at midfield. The Engineers worked their way to the Bison 22 where Horn threw 10 yards to tailback Peter Schreck, of West Lawn, PA, and then ran the left side for 11 more to the 1. On Bucknell's first play following the ensuing kickoff tackle Wayne Kasbar, of Summit, NJ, intercepted a deflected forward pass giving Lehigh possession at the Bucknell 47. Horn fired to Benn for 35 yards and to Schreck for nine, fullback Doug Ertz of West Lawn, PA, picked up a couple and Tamburo again plowed the final yard. Scott converted and it was 21-7 at the 14:19 mark. Late in the second quarter, after Bucknell had driven from its own 35 to the Lehigh 8 only to be halted, the teams exchanged punts and interceptions with the Engineers—after a grab by linebacker Ross Santangelo of Hershey, PA—taking over at the Bucknell 34. They drove to the 9 where Horn's pass to Benn was taken in the end zone for another TD. The conversion attempt failed after a center snap was mishandled but Lehigh had a 27- 7 margin going into the locker room at halftime. The cushion jumped to 33-7 at 8:17 of the third period on a 21- yard throw from Horn to Benn right after the Engineers had recovered a Bucknell fumble. Scott's conversion try was off target following this score. Tony Semler replaced Horn during the fourth period and directed an impressive 68-yard scoring march, passing 14yards to wingback Eric Hunsberger of Schwenksville, PA, 20 yards to wingback Jim Davidson of Selinsgrove, PA, and the final five yards to tight end Jeff Hunt of Nazareth, PA, deep in the end zone. Semler also reeled off a 19-yard run during this surge. Freshman tailback Joe Svede, of Mt. Bethel, PA, got his first varsity chance in the third period and made the most of it. The 6-foot, 195-pound youngster, who starred for the JV team this fall, emerged as Lehigh's rushing leader with nine carries for 35 yards. Horn had a great first half, completing eight of 11 aerials for 163 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, but he cooled off after the intermission and ultimately gave way to Semler who completed (Continued on Page 2)
