Lehigh's football team climbed above the .500 mark last Saturday with a hard- fought victory over Connecticut before 12,000 Freshman Parents Day fans in Taylor Stadium, 13-7. It was the Engineers' second straight triumph and the third against two losses. The Lehigh points came on a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Marty Horn to split end Rennie Benn and the kicking of Jim Scott who contributed an extra point and field goals of 21 and 32 yards. Connecticut, riding the crest of successive victories over Yale and New Hampshire, and ranked among the national 1-AA leaders in team defense, battled the Engineers from start to finish but couldn't preserve its budding win streak. Lehigh turned back the Huskies for the fifth straight time in their short six-game series. UConn won the opener in 1945. Both defensive units kept busy grabbing fumbles and/or interceptions as each team was guilty of five turnovers. Although Horn wound up with another day of creditable figures he had a slow start, being intercepted four times in the first half. The Engineers broke a scoreless tie with 5:46 left in the second quarter as Scott, from Boonsboro, MD, kicked a 32- yard field goal after the Engineers moved into position on Award-Winners Corner back Dave Mecca (defense) of Dunmore, PA, center Dave Whitehead (offense) of Bethlehem, PA, and return man Pete Schreck (special teams) of West Lawn, PA, received Lehigh coaching staff awards following the victory over Connecticut. NCAA Champs Take Memorial Run Reigning NCAA champion Wisconsin took men's honors and Oregon was first in the women's division of the 10th annual Paul Short Memorial Run last Saturday at the Saucon Fields. The tournament had a national flavor as teams from all over the country partici pated as a tuneup for the NCAA Div. I nationals which Lehigh hosts on the same course Nov. 21. Wisconsin was charged with only 24 points while runnerup Michigan had 98 and third-place Georgetown 122. JohnEaskerof Wisconsin took men's individual laurels finishing the 10,000 meter run in 29:32.1. Scott Jenkins of Wisconsin was second. In the women's 5,000 meter test Oregon had 55 points against 85 for runnerup Florida and 105 for Penn State. Kathy Hayes of Oregon was the individual winner with a time of 16:41.0. Suzanne Girard, of Georgetown, placed second. passes from Horn to Benn plus a 12-yard toss to reserve fullback John Tamburo of Baldwin, NY. Lehigh kicked off, forced a return punt, and suddenly clicked on a touchdown drive from midfield. Horn's 35-yard throw to Benn set the stage for his 16-yard scoring toss to the same receiver who made a diving, circus catch in the end zone with only 1:45 remaining in the half. Early in the third period a fumble on a punt return gave Connecticut an opportunity from the Lehigh 12-yard line and the Huskies took full advantage of the miscue. They moved to the 1 on three plays and tailback Gary Dubose rammed his way into the end zone. The conversion cut Lehigh's lead to 10-7 with 10:52 still to play in the quarter.
