Vol. 26 — No. 6 OCTOBER 18, 1983 BETHLEHEM, PA. LU Women Retain Tennis Title New Hampshire Tops Gridders Garron, of UNH, Registers Five TDs In 52-28 Game New Hampshire played "long-ball" against Lehigh last Saturday, coming up with a variety of big gainers which leveled the Engineers' highly-regarded defense and produced a 52-28 victory at Durham, NH. The loss snapped a budding two-game win streak for Coach John Whitehead's footballers and dropped them back to the .500 mark at 3-and-3 with five games remaining. UNH also is 3-and-3. Lehigh's offense put 28 points on the board, usually enough to win, but the defense couldn't survive against the brilliant play of tailback-split end Andre Garron, quarterback Rick Lec- lerc and an overall offensive blocking effort which could be used as a film on how to play the game. Garron, a 5-11, 187-pound sophomore listed as a split end, divided his duties there and at tailback. Wherever he lined up he dazzled the Engineers and a turnout of 8,500 spectators. He carried the ball 24 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, and returned two kickoffs for 113 yards including a 92-yard scoring dash to open the game. His touchdown runs from scrimmage were for four and 27 yards and his touchdowns on recep tions came on plays of 27 and 63 yards. Leclerc completed 11 of 15 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns while guiding an explosive, balanced offense in errorless fashion. Lehigh signal-caller Marty Horn, of Short Hills, NJ, connected on 21 of 38 aerials for 233 yards and two touchdowns, the scores coming on passes of seven and 32 yards to split end Rennie Benn, also of Short Hills, and scored on a 1-yard rollout, but these accomplishments meant little against the UNH point parade. The Engineers, shaking off Garron's opening TD sprint, came back with a drive from midfield to tie the score at 7-7 during the first quarter on Horn's touchdown. The Wildcats then opened up a 31-7 advantage with a field goal, Garron's 27-yard touchdown run and scoring passes of 10 yards to alternate tailback Curt Collins and 27 yards to Garron. When Lehigh tallied just No tickets remain for the Lehigh-Army football game at West Point Saturday, Oct. 22. It's Homecoming for the Cadets and more than 40,000 tickets have been sold. KAREN ADAMS . . .Winning Coach before halftime, on Horn's 7- yard toss to Benn, and again in the third period on a plunge by fullback Doug Ertz of West Lawn, PA, slicing the New Hampshire lead to 31-21, visions of a successful comeback stirred the Engineers. Leclerc quickly dashed all hopes, connecting on an 82-yard screen pass to Collins for a touchdown and a 63-yard scoring toss to Garron. When Garron raced across from the four, for his fifth TD of the day, the Wildcats had an incredible 31- point margin at 52-21. Horn's late 32-yard TD aerial to Benn closed out the scoring. Tailback Peter Schreck, of West Lawn, PA, turned in a fine day for the Engineers with 21 carries for 84 yards, four pass receptions for 27 yards and two kickoff returns for 31 yards.
