NewSE Enjoys Big Day, Whalen Kicks Record FG After his first three passes of the new football season last Saturday, against Maine, Lehigh quarterback Larry Michalski had three completions for 117 yards and two touchdowns. The Engineers used these early points as a springboard to a 24-10 triumph before 10,195 fans in Taylor Stadium. Maine settled down following the opening blitz and, aided by recoveries of four Engineer fumbles and a pass interception, managed to go the rest of the way fairly evenly. Converted defensive halfback Dan Ryan, of Guilderland, N.Y., made a stunning debut as Lehigh's new starting split end, following in the shadow of the graduated Steve Kreider and Mark Yeager. He scored all three of the Engineer touchdowns, on throws from Michalski covering 43,65 and 17 yards, during a day in which he hauled in six aerials for 167 yards. Michalski, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., who made his varsity debut last year completing 14 of 27 aerials against Maine for 234 yards and three TDs in a 37-6 rout, had an even better game. This time, while also throwing for three scores, he completed 13 of 21 for 257 yards. On Lehigh's second play from scrimmage Michalski fired nine yards to Ryan, reaching mid- field. After two running plays he unloaded again, throwing to Ryan for a touchdown on a play covering 43 yards. On the Engineers' second possession they moved from their 12 to the 35 on the ground before Michalski and Ryan did their thing again, this time striking for a 65-yard touchdown. On each score Ryan broke loose behind the defense near the left sideline, made his catch and raced for the end zone. Reserve split end Mike Whalen, of South Plainfield, N. J., got into the Lehigh record book on his first field goal try during the third period, booting a 49-yarder for a 17-3 lead. The old mark was 47 yards set by Dave Mancosh in 1974 against Colgate and tied by Mark Weaver against Penn in 1975 and by Ted Iobst against Rhode (Continued on Page 2) Game At A Glance LEHIGH 14 0 3 7—24 Maine 0 3 0 7-10 L—Ryan 43 pass from Michalski.
