Vol. 22 — No. 17 JANUARY 22, 1980 BETHLEHEM, PA. Winning Saturday Cagers, Grapplers Victorious Basketball Team Surprises American At Stabler, 73-68 Shrugging off a 6-game losing streak, and the absence of its leading scorer, Lehigh's basketball team upset highly-favored American last Saturday at the Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center, 73-68. It was a remarkable turnabout for the Engineers of Coach Brian Hill who simply took the game away from the much-taller Eagles with 40 minutes of aggressive, hustling basketball. Earlier in the week Lehigh was defeated at Gettysburg. 74-59 and at Drexel, 83-77, during contests in which the Engineers outscored both teams from the floor only to lose from the free throw line. They obviously were paying attention because against American they won in the same manner, trailing 28-21 in field goals but piling up a 31-12 margin from the foul stripe. The Eagles had the top individual scorer, in all-conference star Boo Bowers who netted 24 points, but Lehigh's better-balanced attack overcame this problem. Charley Blue, of East Orange, N.J., and Mike Power, of Doyles- town, Pa., had big weeks for the Brown and White. Blue collected 50 points in the three contests with 13 at Gettysburg, 22 at Drexel and 15 against American. Power had 16 at Gettysburg, 10 at Drexel and 18 in the big win over American, for a total of 44. These kind of performances, especially against American, took up the slack caused by the absence of Jeff Vandemark of Mahwah, N.J., the seasonal scoring leader who's sidelined with a bad ankle following an Women Lehigh's women's basketball team won once and lost twice in the Snowflake Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Ship- pensburg State. The Engineers opened with a 59-48 loss to Millersville in which Mary Zdrocoff of Allentown, Pa., netted 13 points and Sharon Beltz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, added 10. In their second appearance the Lehigh women downed Clarion, 83-63, before losing to Slippery Rock, 58-52. Karen Lelinski of Levittown, Pa., netted 26 points including 12 in a row to open the second half against Clarion while Beltz and Zdrocoff had 14 each and Laurie Gregg of Wellesley, Mass., and Helga Schlape of Florham Park, M.J., netted 10 apiece. injury at Rutgers Jan. 8. Vandemark, a senior with 964 career points, may be out for the rest of the campaign with ligament damage. Little Bob Epstein, a 5-7, ball- handling guard from York, Pa., who serves as an Engineer tri- captain, came off the bench against American in a situation which called for his dribbling talents. Lehigh, after building up a 66- 60 lead largely on the scoring of Power, Blue, Kevin Riley of Philadelphia, Pa., and freshman Fred Ketcho of Wood-Ridge, N.J., needed Epstein to direct a clock-killing effort in the final minutes. Time: 1:49.9 Wrestlers Defeat Pittsburgh 47-4, Winning Nine Bouts Four falls and two defaults helped Lehigh pad its score Saturday as the Engineer wrestlers rolled over Pittsburgh in Fitzgerald Fieldhouse, 47-4, for their fifth victory in seven dual meets. Leadoff man Rich Santoro of Bethlehem, Pa., at 118, set the tempo of the meet when he needed just 38 seconds to dispose of Mark Yurich and give Lehigh an early 6-0 advantage. The other pins were registered by Tommy Bold of Bethlehem, at 150, Colin Kilrain of Braintree, Mass., at 177, and Mike Brown of Bethlehem at 190. NCAA champ Darryl Burley of Pemberton, N.J., competing at 142 pounds for the first time, and freshman Roy Lobdell of Deposit, N.Y., representing the Engineers at 167, accepted defaults when their opponents couldn't continue because of injuries. Three other Lehigh grapplers took decisions. At 126 Steve Bastianelli, of Georgetown, Del., scored the only takedown of his bout against Bill Clark to finish on top, 3-2. Pete Schuyler of Bound Brook, N.J., wrestling at 134 for the first time, won 11-2 over Glenn Nacion and at 158 Jim Reilly, of North Wales, Pa., romped to a 12-3 margin against Eric Harris. Steve Smocharski, 6-9 and 420 pounds, was Pitt's only winner as he downed Drew Keiser, 6-3 and 300, of Sinking Spring, Pa., 10-2, in the last bout on the card. Smocharski had a takedown and 3-point near fall early in the bout, for a 5-point move, and Keiser never could catch up. Burley had difficulty with Gordon early in the bout but was out front by a comfortable margin when the Panther matman defaulted. Lobdell, in only his second varsity ap pearance, gave up three takedowns and back points before struggling to win against Chendy who injured a shoulder in the third period. The pins and defaults enabled Lehigh to match a school record for most points in a dual meet set Jan. 9 when the Engineers routed Southern Illinois, 47-2. Schuyler and Burley, both up a notch in weight, had a chance to work at their new spots in case Coach Thad Turner decides to use them there Saturday afternoon in the big meet against Penn State at Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center. Prior to the Pitt meet Turner said he'd have Burley "down again for the tournaments" but refused to say where he'd spot the NCAA champion against the Nittany Lions. Burley, Kilrain and Brown have the best individual marks for Lehigh this season, all at 9-1. Santoro is close behind, at 8-2. Bastianelli is 4-1, Reilly 6-2, Bold 6-3, Schuyler 4-2, Keiser 5-5 and Lobdell 1-1. LEHIGH 47, PITTSBURGH 4 118— Rich Santoro, L, pinned Mark Yurich in 0:38. 126 — Steve Bastianelli, L, dec.
