Vol. 21 — No. 18 FEBRUARY 6, 1979 BETHLEHEM, PA. Cagers Whip Bucknell, Rider Easy Week For Mat Squad Springfield, Army Fall One-sided triumphs over Springfield, 36-6, and Army, 35-6, last week allowed Lehigh wrestlers to clinch their 27th consecutive winning season. Coach Thad Turner's squad has a 10-5 record with only meets against Penn State and Syracuse remaining. The Engineers won 17 of 20 bouts during the week, losing at heavyweight against Springfield and at 167 and heavyweight at Army, to bring their seasonal totals to 84 victories, 60 losses and six ties in 150 bouts. NCAA champion Mark Lieberman, of Allentown, Pa., who has been hampered by illness for the last several weeks, returned at 177 in the Springfield meet and pinned Mike Ciarmiello in 1:02. He wrestled at 190 in the Army dual and flattened John Hilliard in just 36 seconds. He now has 35 career falls, second only to Eddie Eichelberger who holds the Engineer record of 37 compiled during regular-season, EIWA and NCAA comeptition. He also is working on a string of four pins in a row and the mark is six, also held by Eichelberger. Falls against Penn State and Syracuse will enable Lieberman to tie both records. Other double winners during the week were freshman 126- pounder Pete Schuyler of Bound Brook, N.J., 150-pounder Greg Cunningham of Livingston, N.J., and 158-pounder Bill Schneck of Milford, Pa. TUESDAY, FEB. 20 Conn. Valley Lehigh Club: (Continued on Page 2) A pair of 23-point outbursts by senior guard Bill Griffin, of Scotch Plains, N.J., paced Lehigh's basketball team to victories over Bucknell, 82-64, and Rider, 74-68, last week as the Engineers ran their winning streak to three games. Coach Brian Hill's charges enjoyed one of the finest weeks in recent years, beginning last Wednesday when a highly- favored Bucknell squad was flattened in Grace Hall. Saturday the Engineers moved to Trenton, N.J., for their triumph over Rider. Lehigh scratched its way to a 34-33 halftime lead, kept up a winning pace at the start of the second half and gradually built up a stunning margin over the taller Bisons by converting free throws after forcing frequent fouls. It all made for a surprisingly disappointing trip for a large and boisterous delegation of Bucknell fans which opened the game wildly cheering the Bisons' every move. The noise-makers, horns and yelling didn't subside for a long time but finally the visiting rooters accepted the inevitable as Lehigh simply refused to buckle and Bucknell went down to a totally-unexpected defeat. Griffin pumped in his 23 points, Kevin Riley of Philadelphia had 16, Paul Hanks of Warminster, Pa., 15, Jeff Vandemark of Mah- wah, N.J., nine along with eight rebounds, and Brian Camperson of Haddonfield, N.J., eight. Bucknell made a couple of runs at the Engineers in the second half, once slicing its deficit to six, but Vandemark and Riley countered with big three-point plays to keep things going in Lehigh's favor. The Engineers kept drawing fouls, as Bucknell desperately tried to fight back, and they converted 30 of 36 chances from the free throw line. The Bisons returned to the Lehigh Valley three days later and hammered out a 74-68 victory at Lafayette. At Rider Griffin hit several jumpers in the beginning of the game to provide the Engineers with a 14-6 lead at 15 minutes. But Lehigh didn't score for the next six minutes and Alberto Baptiste, who scored 20 points, started taking the ball inside and put Rider up 16-14.
