Vol. 22 — No. 11 NOVEMBER 21, 1979 BETHLEHEM, PA. At Murray State Dec. 8 Engineers In Playoffs Lafayette Routed, 24-3 Lehigh put together a classic combination of ball-control offense and rock-ribbed defense last Saturday to pound Lafayette into submission before 19,000 spectators at Taylor Stadium, 24- 3. It was the Engineers' tenth victory over the Leopards in the last 12 meetings in college football's most-played rivalry. The teams, which first tangled in 1884, faced each other for the 115th time. Sophomore halfback Joe Rabuck of Philadelphia, Pa., who paced the Lehigh (9-2) onslaught with 27 carries for 113 yards, won the Most Valuable Player award on a vote of news media representatives. The Engineer defense staged an award-winning performance, too, limiting Lafayette (5-3-2) to zero yards on the ground and only 94 in the air, and a meager six first downs. The Leopards never threatened seriously on their own, averting a shutout late in the first half only after recovering a fumble on the Lehigh 9. After being held to a pair of yards on three plays, and calling time with one second remaining on the clock, they settled for Dave Heverling's field goal from the 14, a 24-yard boot. Otherwise it was 33 rushes for the Leopards for 57 yards, but a matching 57 yards in losses for a net of zero on the ground, 10 completions in 24 aerial attempts for 94 yards, and nine punts. It was another day of standing ovations for the Engineer defensive platoon as it returned to the sideline after shutting down almost every Lafayette move. The zero yardage is a rarity and so was the number of penalties called. There was only one, against Lafayette, and it was a half-the-distance call at the Leopard 4, meaning a 2-yard infraction. Lehigh's offense staged one of its better displays of the season netting 263 yards on 62 running plays and completing eight of 13 passes for 89 yards. That's 75 offensive chances for 352 yards against Lafayette's 57 plays and 94 yards. The Engineers accumulated 22 first downs, 16 of them on the turf. A defensive fumble, after a pass interception late in the second period, set up the Lafayette field goal. An offensive bobble, in the fourth stanza, cost Lehigh possession on the Leopard 11. Except for those lapses, and one pass interception by the enemy, it was a relaxing day for wearers of the brown and white, on the field and in the stands. Lehigh will travel Saturday, Dec. 8, to face Murray State at Murray, Ky. The winner of that game advances to the Div. This will be Lehigh's fourth postseason appearance. In 1973 and 1975 the Engineers were first-round losers while in 1977 they won the Div. 2 national championship. The Lehigh Alumni Office will endeavor to arrange alumni activities before and after the Dec. 8 contest. Alumni wishing detailed information are asked to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Alumni Office, Alumni Memorial Building No. 27, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., 18015. Stabler Center Dedication On Dec. 1 Lehigh's new 6,000-seat Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center will be officially dedicated Saturday afternoon, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. Major participants in the program will be Harold S. Mohler, president of the Board of Trustees; Dr. Deming Lewis, president of the University; Frank C. Rabold, vice chairman of the Trustees' Physical Planning and Plant Committee; and Donald B. Stabler, Lehigh alumnus and Trustee, for whom the Lehigh trustees named the building. Stabler and his wife, Dorothy, are the major donors to the $3.7- million facility through the first phase of Lehigh's $75-million "New Century Fund." The University will dedicate the building in memory of Mr. Stabler's parents. A plaque, which will be placed in the lobby of the facility, will read as follows: "Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center, named . in memory of George W. and Etta Mae Stabler by Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler. The Lehigh University Trustees acknowledge with deep gratitude the generous gift of Donald B. Stabler, B.S. '30, M.S. '32; LL.D. '74, and his wife Dorothy in memory of his parents who by their sacrifices made possible their sons' Lehigh education. A devoted and distinguished Alumnus and Trustee, Donald Stabler and his wife Dorothy also provide generously in other meaningful ways for the Students and Faculty of the University." Stabler is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Stabler Companies, Inc., Stabler Construction Company, Protection Services, Inc., State Aggregates Inc., and DBS Transit Company, all headquartered in Harrisburg. He also is chairman and chief executive officer of Eastern Industries, Inc., Wescosville, Pa. He and Mrs. Stabler maintain homes in Harrisburg and Bal Harbour, Fla. At the ceremony memorial and special gifts to the building will be announced and also dedicated. The ceremony will be preceded by a junior varsity wrestling meet against Wilkes College and will be followed by a varsity wrestling meet against Wilkes, a men's varsity basketball game with Muhlenberg College and a women's varsity basketball game with the University of Scranton. Stabler Center, which has a total of 55,440 square feet under one roof with 19,720 of floor space for events, was first used for Lehigh's 1979 Commencement in May and the Lehigh Alumni Association's 1979 Reunion in June. Since then a variety of special events have been held in the Center, including programs sponsored by the University and by other organizations. Recently the spectacular "Holidy on Ice" show was staged in the building. Also in November 1,000 freshmen and their parents had dinner in the Center. In September the kickoff dinner for the United Way of Northampton Counties was hosted there and the Lehigh Home Club and Alumni Association held a testimonial dinner there for the late John S. Steckbeck. And, in October, the Lehigh Office of Public Information and Auxiliary Services Office held a "Press Prevue Party" in the Center. One of the features of the Center are the 1,240 retractable armchair seats, which give the building a great deal of flexibility for events. The Center also has. 2,077 permanent armchair seats and 2,496 bleacher type seats.
