Vol. 22 — No. 5 OCTOBER 9, 1979 BETHLEHEM, PA. Delaware Victorious Over Lehigh Before 20,636 Spectators, 21-14 Engineer Rally Falls Short; Yeager Gets 2 Touchdowns JVs Romp In Opener Quarterback John Dean fired four touchdown passes, all in the second quarter, Sunday night as Lehigh won a junior varsity football opener over Kutztown on the Saucon Fields, 39-0. Dean, a freshman from Philadelphia and LaSalle High School was one of four quarterbacks used by the Little Engineers, each playing one period. His scoring tosses were 11 yards to tight end Paul Anastesio of Camp Hill, Pa., 50 yards to halfback Terry Heffner of Allentown, Pa., 20 yards to fullback John Ahsler of Chatham, N.J., and 70 yards to split end Barry Corriel of Millington, N.J. Ahsler also scored on a one- yard plunge, following a 49-yard pass from quarterback Ron Carr of Selinsgrove, Pa., to split end Ryan Mulqueen of Bethlehem, Pa., and halfback Eddie Godbolt of Bethlehem ended the romp with a 30-yard touchdown sprint off the left side in the third quarter. Kutztown, trailing 32-0 at halftime, managed a drive to the Lehigh one-yard line in the fourth period before giving the ball up on downs. Brian Dehler of Lake Lake Grove, N.Y., quarterbacked the Little Engineers in the third period and Larry Michalski of Pittsburgh, Pa., handled the job in the fourth. An impressive second-half comeback fell short last Saturday as Lehigh's football team dropped a 21-14 decision to the University of Delaware before 20,636 fans at Newark, De. It was the first victory for the Blue Hens over the Engineers in the last three meetings between these two old rivals. Lehigh won 35-23 in 1975, its most recent visit to Delaware Stadium before Saturday, and 27- 17 last season in Bethlehem. The teams didn't meet in 1976 and 1977. In the 1979 tussle the Engineers fell behind in the first half, 14-0, tallied twice around a Blue Hen touchdown after the intermission, but were unable to capitalize upon an excellent chance to score again with about six minutes left in the game. The golden opportunity came after the Lehigh defense, playing solidly all afternoon, twice stopped the Blue Hens deep in their own territory and forced punts. After that second kick, which only reached the Delaware 35- yard line, the Engineers got a couple of yards from fullback Bob Romeo, of New Providence, N.J., and 13 big ones as quarterback Rich Andres of Millville, N.J., completed a pass to tight end Dave Rarig of Whitehall, Pa. With a first down at the 20, and momentum definitely on their side, the Engineers came up with a fumbled pitchout recovered by Delaware on the 23. It was Lehigh's last chance to tie or win. The Engineers' touchdowns both came on passes from Andres to split end Mark Yeager of Madison, N.J. In the third period, down 14 points, they were in scoring position after a fine 37-yard punt return by Mike Tuohey of N. Syracuse, N.Y. This gave them possession on the Delaware 30. Andres immediately threw nine yards to halfback Jeff Bernstein, of Randallstown, Md., and Romeo rammed his way eight yards through the middle, reaching the 13. Halfback Joe Rabuck, of Philadelphia, Pa., contributed three yards and on a third down situation Andres hit Yeager on a 10-yard pass in the end zone. STATEMENT OF OWNERSHIP MANAGEMENTS. Niemeyer Executive Director The second Lehigh TD came early in the fourth quarter and was set up when safetyman Keith Conley, of Rockville, Md., pounced upon a fumble at the Blue Hen 12. Rabuck ran for six of those yards before Andres fired the final six across the goal line, again to Yeager. Placekicker Ted Iobst, of Em- maus, Pa., converted after each touchdown. Lehigh trailed 21-14, with 12:30 remaining in the game, and the Engineers were in fine position with a strong wind at their backs to pin down the Hens and do further damage. The defense did that job on the next two Delaware possessions only to have the costly pitchout fumble write an end to the comeback. Delaware, a 19-point favorite in Dunkel ratings, drove 67 yards in seven plays after an interception for its initial score very late in the first quarter. The big play was a 46-yard pass completion to the Lehigh 11. Two plays later quarterback Scott Brunner fired those 11 yards down the middle to halfback Lou Mariani in the end zone. Midway in the second stanza the Hens made it 14-0 as Guy Ramsey picked off another Lehigh pass and raced 74 yards across the goal line. Delaware's final TD came on a second 67- yard march, taking nine plays, with fullback Bo Dennis piling up 64 of those yards. Dennis, a 6-3, 220-pound senior, carried the ball eight straight times and one of those efforts was a 35-yard gallop to the Lehigh 19 where halfback Charlie Marck, of Bethesda, Md., made a last-man tackle near the sideline. The Engineers braced, giving up further yards very grudgingly, but Dennis rammed his way four yards to the 6, on a fourth-and-one maneuver, and then picked up three more to the 3 on his eighth consecutive turn with the ball. Delaware gave him a moment's rest at that point, sending Mariani on a right end sweep toward the end zone. He fought his way to the goal line, dropped the ball, but had teammate Ed Wood fall on it in the end zone for the touchdown. Lehigh holds the record for most points ever scored against Penn State in a football game, routing the Lions 106-0 in 1889.
