Baseball Season; Team 4-4 Footballers Practice; Spring Game Apr. 28 Lehigh spring football practice, suspended during spring vacation, resumed April 2 on the Saucon Fields. Four drill sessions, principally for newcomers to the varsity squad, were held March 19-22 with approximately 65 candidates on hand. The rusumption of practice found lettermen and other veterans of the 1978 squad reporting for the first time. Sessions are scheduled through Saturday, April 28, when the annual spring game will be held in Taylor Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Two veterans, learning new positions, were active in early drills. They were hard-running Lieberman, Weaver Win Lehigh grapplers Mark Lieberman (180.5) and Bobby Weaver (105.5) won U.S. Wrestling Federation national championships March 24 at Madison, Wis., on the second day of the annual federation tournament. Both were representing the New York A.C. March 28 they competed in a dual meet against the Russians at Kings College with Lieberman winning his bout and Weaver losing to a world champion. Lieberman met the same opponent April 1 in the finals of the World Cup matches at Toledo, Ohio, and was pinned. Earlier he defeated Cuban, Japanese and African opponents. Atlanta Alumni To Hear Steck John Steckbeck, associate director for intramural sports and recreation at Lehigh, will be the principal speaker April 10 at a dinner meeting of The Atlanta Lehigh Alumni Club in Swain's Steak House, 81 Peachtree Park Drive NE, Atlanta, Ga. Mike Hemp of 4832 Lake Fjord Pass, Marietta, Ga., phone 922- 6764, is reservations chairman. John Champagne of 570 Valley Lane NE, Atlanta, is club president. NEXT ISSUE The next issue of The South Mountaineer will be published April 16. letterman Joe Rabuck of Philadelphia, Pa., moving from fullback to halfback, and Rich Titus of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., moving from defensive end to defensive tackle. Rabuck, 5-11 and 195 pounds, was impressive as a reserve fullback in 1978 as he carried the ball 56 times for 226 yards (4.0) and a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 28 yards, seeing action in 11 games as the Engineers went 8-3. Titus, 6-1 and 240, made the shift to tackle without much trouble, demonstrating a lot of agility for a big man. He saw some action last year as a replacement on the wings. Newcomers impressing the staff included offensive tackle Kevin Greene, 6-3 and 240, of Jersey City, N.J., linebacker Ken Rosen, 6-0 and 215, of Elmwood Park, N.J., defensive tackle Matt Morgan, 6-2 and 220, of Waynesburg, Pa., a former linebacker, defensive end Russ Becker, 6-3 and 225, of Riegels- ville, Pa., and Palisades High School, and tight ends Paul Anastasio, 6-2 and 202, of Camp Hill, Pa., and Tim Miller, 6-4 and 215, of Allentown, Pa., and William Allen High School. These men will be sophomores for the 1979 campaign and all played on last season's junior varsity team with the exception of Greene who is reporting for the first time. REICHENBACH Tracksters Open Lehigh University's track team will carry a 16-match winning streak into its opening test of the season Saturday, April 7, on the Saucon Fields against Temple, Colgate, East Stroudsburg, Bloomsburg and Trenton State at noon. John Covert, moving into his 12th campaign, has posted seven winning seasons with a total of 43 victories and 25 defeats. Lehigh was undefeated in 1971, 1976 and 1978. The Engineers dropped their opener two years ago to Temple, won seven later matches and were 9-0 last spring. John Whitehead Honored John Whitehead, Lehigh head football coach, was honored March 17 by The Scotland School of Scotland, Pa., at Carlisle, Pa. Whitehead is an alumnus of The Scotland School, Class of 1943, and he began his coaching career there as line mentor in 1950 after serving in the Navy during World War II and graduating from East Stroudsburg State College. The school honored him as a distinguished alumnus, citing his four-year playing career at East Stroudsburg and his successful coaching career which includes a national Div. II title-winning team at Lehigh in 1977. Prior to joining the Engineer staff in 1967 he was head coach at Stroud Union High School, Stroudsburg, Middletown, N.Y., High School and Carlisle, Pa., High School. He became head coach at Lehigh in 1976 and his three-year record with the Engineers is 26- 10. A sizeable Lehigh delegation of alumni and university administrators attended. Maurice Heckler, who was head football coach and assistant superintendent at The Scotland School when Whitehead was an undergraduate, was among the speakers. Heckler has since retired. Establishment of the John Whitehead Award, which will be given each year to the school's most outstanding scholar-athlete, was announced. Whitehead received a silver tray from the school and a trophy from other members of the Class of 1943. His wife, Bernice, was given a sketch of the campus. Turns Back Armstrong State; Lehigh, Lafayette Divide Veteran righthander Doug Reichenbach, of Flemington, N.J., opened Lehigh's 1979 baseball season with a no-hitter in Savannah, winning 4-1 over Armstrong State in the first game of the squad's annual spring vacation training trip to Statesboro, Ga. The Engineers dropped their next three starts before an 11th- inning home run by outfielder Kenny Wood, of Trenton, n.J., gave them a 2-1 decision over Methodist College at Fayet- teville, N.C., on the way home. They balanced the record at 3- and-3 with a 7-1 triumph over the University of Rochester in their initial appearance of the season on the Saucon Fields, dropped a 16-0 game to visiting Lafayette and then bounced back the next day to outscore the Leopards in Easton, 11-8, and pull even again at 4-and-4. Righthander Mark Iorio, of Trenton, N.J., went the route against Rochester. Mitch Smith, of Allendale, N.J., hurled the 11- inning victory over Methodist and a complete game in the triumph over Lafayette. Sophomore third-baseman Chris Nagle, of Allentown, Pa., pounded out a 3-run homer and a 2-run single against the Leopards and outfielder Glenn Troxel, of West Lawn, Pa., had four hits. Troxel led the Engineer batters after their first eight contests with a .379 average. Reichenbach, in his no-hitter over Armstrong, struck out four, walked four and lost a shutout in the fourth inning on an error, steal infield out and sacrifice fly. The split with Lafayette gave Lehigh three triumphs in the last four games against the Leopards. The Engineers swept the 1978 twin bill, 8-7 and 3-2.
