It was the ninth victory of the season for the Engineers, against only two losses, and it cemented their claim as the top collegiate wrestling team in the East. Navy (8-3) picked up an unexpected six points early in the meet, on an unusual disqualification, and this enabled the Middies to carry a 16-11 lead into the last three bouts. Coach Thad Turner had his star trio of Mark Lieberman (177), Mike Brown (190) and Don McCorkel (Hvy) of Hershey, Pa., primed for the task, however, and they pulled the Engineers to victory picking up a fall and two major decisions. Lieberman began the late onslaught with a 16-7 trouncing of Jack Hanson. Brown pinned talented Greg Cooper in 6:58 and McCorkel polished off Nick Mygas, 8-0. Earlier Steve Bastianelli, of Georgetown, Del., had whipped Terry Ruddy 13-10 in their 118- pound opener, Lance Leonhardt had rallied to beat tough Mike Beck 7-5 at 126, Pat Sculley had registered a routine 5-0 decision over Larry Kihlstadius at 150 and Nils Deacon of Howell, N.J., had battled veteran Roger Fleischer Mark Lieberman All-Star Choice Undefeated Mark Lieberman, of Lehigh, has accepted an invitation to compete in the 11th annual NCAA East-West All-Star wrestling meet Feb. 7 at Oregon State. Lieberman, of Allentown, is a veteran of international competition who has an 8-0 record this winter at 177 pounds. In the all- star meet he'll participate at 167. He missed six bouts this season because of a knee injury suffered early in December. Since returning to the lineup he has beaten opponents from East Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Iowa State, Pittsburgh and Navy. This will be the sixth time that Lehigh has been represented in the all-star action. Mike Caruso won in 1967 and Mike Frick was a winner in 1973 and 1976. Dick Meyer lost in 1970 and Terry DeStito was defeated in 1975. Wally Johnson, of Minnesota, is selecting and coaching the East team. to a 2-2 draw at 167. The disqualification, which gave Navy a second chance after the Middies had fallen behind 6-0 and were in danger of being soundly battered, came at 134 and lifted the visitors into a surprising 6-6 tie. Graber's elbow hit off the padding, on the hardwood, and he suffered an injury which made it impossible for him to continue. Referee Pascal Perri disqualified Sloand and declared Graber the winner. Navy took two of the next three bouts, at 142 and 158, to turn what was shaping up as a rout into an uphill struggle for the Engineers. Greg Cunningham of Livingston, N.J., wrestling his first bout for Lehigh, did well against EIWA runnerup Tom Bauer at '42 before bowing, 3-2. Mark Stauffer . of Hummelstown, Pa., representing the Engineers at 150, was outscored by Navy ace John Althans, a national place- winner, 24-11.
