Vol. 20 — No. 5 OCTOBER 11, 1977 BETHLEHEM, PA. Rieker, Daniels, Kreider Lead Lehigh To Victory Over Rhode Island, 42-16 LU Runners Top 4 Foes Jim Davis, a junior from Maplewood, N.J., finished first in 25:07 over the 5-mile Saucon Fields route to help Lehigh's cross country runners sweep past four opponents last Saturday. The Engineers defeated Millersville, 25-30, West Chester, 23-36, Rider, 19-44, and East Stroudsburg, 16-45, hiking their seasonal mark to 7-and-3. Other Lehigh's in the Top Fifteen were Larry Ullrich of Amherst, N.H., sixth; Dave Rohr of Rochester, N.Y., seventh; Don Fink of Scotch Plains, N.J., eleventh, and Rick Devine of Westwood, N.J., thirteenth. The order of finish: 1. Jim Davis (L). Time: 25:07; 2. Al Treffinger (M); 3. Mike Home (WC); 4. Pat Quirk (WC); 5. Andy Noll (R); 6. Larry Ullrich (L); 7. Dave Rohr (L); 8. Jim Shorkey (M); 9. Dave Hummel (M); 10. Norm Dethloff (M); 11. Don Fink (L); 12. Bob Orazem (ES); 13. Rick DeVine (L); 14. Matt Hart (WC); 15. Steve Montick (ES). JV Gridders Win First Two placekick cdnversions by Ted Iobst, of Emmaus, Pa., gave Lehigh its winning margin in a junior varsity football victory over Kutztown State in the Saucon Valley "bowl," 14-12. It was the first triumph of the season for the Little Engineers who dropped a hard-fought decision to Rutgers one week ago, 30-21. Kutztown had defeated Shippensberg State and Stevens Trade, and lost to East Stroudsburg, before meeting Lehigh. Lehigh drove 52 yards for the game's first touchdown with Steve Plucinsky of Wallington, N.J., highlighting the attack. Fullback John Young of Washington, D.C., plunged the final yard and Iobst converted for a 7-0 advantage. Lehigh scored again, during the second period, with Dave Rosenfeld of Stamford, Conn., picking up 68 yards in two plays for the touchdown. First he passed to Mark Yeager of Madison, N. J., on a halfback pass good for 31 yards. On the next play he caught a 37-yard scoring pass from quarterback Lou Pierro of Hudson, N.Y. Iobst again converted. It was the fourth victory in five starts for Lehigh and it dampened the enthusiasm of 4,115 spectators at Meade Field, Kingston, R.I. The host Rams, who had hoped for better things after winning 28-0 over Maine one week earlier, lost for the third time in five tries. Rieker, the senior passing star from Catasauqua, Pa., completed 11 of 22 aerials for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He was the national total offense leader in Div. II prior to the game with a 239-yard average. Kreider, of Reading, Pa., caught six passes for 194 yards- one of them the early longdistance TD heave from Rieker— but was given the afternoon off where punt returns were concerned. He was a national leader in that category for Div. II prior to the game with a 20.7 average. Halfback Lennie Daniels, of Coxsackie, N.Y., enjoyed his finest varsity game with 17 carries for 103 yards including an 8-yard scoring burst, to lead the Engineers on the ground. John Morrissey, of Monroe, Conn., carried 11 times for 40 yards and Dave Aprill, of Fords, N.J., picked up 36 yards on nine attempts. The anticipated aerial duel between Rieker and Steve Tosches, a transfer from Idaho State who had been impressive for the Rams in earlier starts, never materialized. Lehigh defenders put a hard pass rush on Tosches early, shaking him up and putting him on the sidelines for much of the game, and he wound up with only two completions in nine attempts for 12 yards. He was sacked for a 14- yard loss and never had time to set up and select targets. Rieker stunned the Rams with his 65-yarder to Kreider on Lehigh's third play following the opening kickoff.
