Post defense last Saturday to whip the Pioneers before 9,500 spectators in Taylor Stadium, 36-10. It was the Engineers' eighth victory in 10 starts and it strengthened Lehigh's bid for a berth in the upcoming NCAA Div. II national championship playoffs. The Lehigh defense, strong all season, placed brilliantly against Post the entire afternoon. The offense, up against one of the top defenses in Div. Ill ranks, managed to put 36 points on the board during a hard-hitting encounter in which officials called more than 21 penalties. Lehigh was guilty 10 times and gave up 108 yards on the infractions. Post was caught 11 times for 174 yards. Several other times penalties were declined and offsetting infractions wiped out a couple of other plays. There also were 12 turnovers, six against each team, and these put additional stress on each defensive unit. As a result the game developed into a grind in which Lehigh netted 259 yards, well below its seasonal average, and Post could manage only 97. Heading up the defenses was end Greg Clark, of Lehigh, who rang up 22 tackles including eight sacks, and recovered a fumble. Clark, a senior from Pittsford, N.Y., appeared to be a fifth man in the Post backfield. Other Engineer defensive standouts were senior tackle Tom Giordani of Hellertown, Pa., who recovered a pair of fumbles, had a sack and eight tackles, sophomore linebacker Jim McCormick of Millville, N.J., with nine tackles and a sack, senior end Glenn Skola of Wallington, N.J., with seven tackles and two sacks, and freshmen linebacker Bruce Rarig, of Whitehall, Pa., with 14 tackles and a pass interception. Six different Engineers scored six points apiece for Lehigh's total of 36. This group included two field goal kickers, sophomore Ken Wood of Pennington, N.J., and freshman Ted Iobst of Emmaus, Pa. The latter also converted three times in four tries, with his final effort being blocked. Senior quarterback Mike Rieker, of Catasauqua, Pa., tallied his first touchdown of the season on a 5-yard run, and fired an 18-yard pass to junior tight end Don Van Orden, of Hawthorne, N.J., for another. Senior halfback Dave Aprill, of Fords, N.J., tallied on a 13-yard run and senior safetyman Steve Hefele, of Allentown, Pa., dashed 57 yards into the end zone with an intercepted pass. Turnovers played a major role. Late in the first quarter, after (Continued on Page 2) Lambert Rankings November 14 1. Massachusetts 8-1 68 V2 2. LEHIGH 8-2 62V2 3. New Hampshire 8-2 57 4. Springfield 7-3 8 Playoff Selections Near Lehigh, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia Union and a "long shot," Delaware, were being considered this week for berths in the NCAA Div. II post-season football playoffs. Delaware, 5-3-1, was given an "outside chance" for serious consideration if the Blue Hens upset undefeated Colgate on Saturday. New Hampshire remained in contention although its chances were all but extinct following last week's 19-6 loss to Massachusetts. Div. II officials, at the NCAA office in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, said Monday (Nov. 14) that "some of the teams" might be picked early this week but that many of the choices wouldn't be known until Nov. 20.
