Routs Lafayette, 35-17, As Rieker Sets TD Mark Senior quarterback Mike Rieker fired three second-half touchdown passes, for a Lehigh seasonal record of 23, last Saturday as the Engineers whipped Lafayette before a capacity crowd of 18,000 in Taylor Stadium, 35-17. This was the 113th game in football's most-played series and it ended the regular schedule for each team, Lehigh finishing 9-2 and Lafayette 5-6. It was the Engineers' sixth victory over the Leopards in the last seven tries. Rieker, who went into action as the NCAA Div. II national leader in total offense with an average of 227 yards a game, didn't open up his aerial attack until midway through the third quarter as the Engineers surprisingly found themselves trailing on the scoreboard, 17-14. Once the overhead barrage got underway three touchdowns were added quickly to the Lehigh total and Lafayette was out of action. Rieker broke a seasonal mark of 22 TD aerials established by Joe Sterrett just two years ago. Lehigh rooters, impatiently waiting for their team's celebrated aerial fireworks to commence, had their innings after the defense—which had set up the game's first touchdown with a blocked punt—somthered a Lafayette field goal try and give the Engineers possession near midfield. Rieker and split end Steve Kreider of Reading, Pa., the most productive passing and receiving combination in football this season, covered 59 yards in just two plays for a touchdown which put Lehigh ahead to stay, 21-17. First there was a 45-yard toss down the middle to the Lafayette 14. Then, on the next down, Rieker cut wide to the left and grabbed a 14-yard scoring toss at the goal line. Two more TDs followed early in the fourth quarter as the Engineers put the game away. The first came after a fumbled punt recovery at the Lafayette 28 and despite a 15-yard penalty which pushed them back to the 31 after Rieker had thrown 12 yards (Continued on Page 2) (B&W Photo) MVP MIKE RIEKER Lehigh QB Honored Mike Rieker, Lehigh quarterback, was voted Most Valuable Player by news media covering the 113th game against Lafayette. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns, and gained 11 yards running. The Catasauqua, Pa. senior threw only five times in the entire first half, completing two of them, as Lehigh stayed on the ground. He was eight- for-12, for 128 yards and the three TDs, after the intermission. Sports Dinner Lehigh's annual fall sports banquet, sponsored by the Lehigh Home Club, the University and the Lehigh Alumni Assn., is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the University Center. There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Field hockey, volleyball, football, soccer and cross country teams will be honored. Frank Hrkach, 123 E. Greenwich St., Bethlehem, phone 868-4519, is reservations chairman. The dinner price is $8.
