Vol. 18 — No. 19 FEBRUARY 17, 1976 j™:*:**:;? BETHLEHEM, PA. mmmmmmmmsmm Matmen Topple Penn State Before 3,200 Fans, 24-17 First Time Since 1968 Lehigh, only wrestling team in the nation with two defending NCAA champions on its roster, had both of them in the lineup for the first time last Saturday and they contributed significantly to a 24-17 victory over Penn State before 3,200 fans at Grace Hall. It was the Engineers' first triumph over the Nittany mat- men since 1968. Last year the teams scrapped to a 16-16 stalemate at Rec Hall. National 134-pound champion Mike Frick, of Hamburg, N. J., moved to 150 for the meet and manhandled rugged Bill Vollrath, 14-3, completing a string of four "must win" victories for Lehigh lightweights. National 177-pound champion Mike Lieberman, in his first meet since Dec. 13, returned to action at 190 and won a key bout against Bill Bertrand, 8-4. Lieberman had been idle since suffering a neck injury in an auto accident early in January. Strategy called for Lehigh to win from 126 through 150, and at 190 and heavyweight. That's how coach Thad Turner spotted his men, in the lighter weights, and that's just how things turned out. Lance Leonhardt, at 126, put Lehigh on the board with a 4-0 shutout of veteran Tom Teagarden. Bob Sloand, of Landing, N. J., followed at 134 with a big fall in 4:29 over Rich Kepler. Unbeaten Tihamer Toth- Fejel, of Cupertino, Calif., kept things rolling with a 17-4 rout of Denny Sciabica and Frick disposed of Vollrath. The four gave Lehigh 18 team points, and an 18-5 lead, collecting a regular decision, a major decision, a superior decision and a fall. State was favored in the next three bouts and won as expected, picking up a fall en route, and slicing Lehigh's lead to 18-17. The Engineers than ran off a string of 15 straight points for a 43-25 lead and took complete command. Charley Brown of Morristown, N. J., paced Lehigh with 19 points. Ray Green, of Washington, D. C, and Bill Milligan, of Ramsey, N. J., had 14 apiece. The 97-point total was Lehigh's highest since an 111-64 rout of Rochester late in the 1970-71 campaign.
