Published by the Lehigh University Alumni Association :-:^:-:-:.:-:-:.:.:.:.:.^.:.:.:.::::;:::::;:::::::::::*:::: Vol. 19 No. 13 DECEMBER 15, 1976 BETHLEHEM, PA. Brown Tops 1,000 Mark As Cagers Capture Pair; Wrestlers Sweep Quad Co-Captain Leads Lehigh Past Colgate, Elizabethtown Senior co-captain Charlie Brown, of Morristown, N.J., became Lehigh's sixth 1,000-point man with a pair of high-scoring efforts as the Engineer basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with victories over Colgate and Elizabethtown. Against Colgate, in an overtime thriller, he netted 25 to reach 1,005 in a 91-86 triumph. Less than a week later he came back with 31 to pace Lehigh to an 87-78 margin over the E-towners. Both games were played in Grace Hall. He's now No. 6 among the Engineers' all-time scoring leaders with 1,036 and challenging the No. 5 man, Eddie Cahn, who netted 1,054 from 1952 through 1955. Bob Fortune (1968-70) heads the list with 1,242 followed by Norm Brandl (1,231), Johnny Waters (1,099) and Hank Wisniewski (1,084). Brown's in position to charge into the No. 3 spot before midseason and then take aim at Fortune's record. In lifting their season mark to 3-and-4 the Engineers received two high-scoring efforts from Brown and Kenny Clifford, the latter a sharpshooting guard from Scotch Plains, N. J., and hot one-game performances from Bill Griffin, another guard from Scotch Plains, and forward Ray Green of Washington, D.C. There were key contributions from others including freshman forward Jeff Vandemark of Mah- wah, N.J., and freshman guard Frank Hillman of Montclair, N.J. Brown banged in 16 points during the first half against a Colgate team which had just upset Lafayette, helping Lehigh to a 32-26 margin at the intermission. The Engineers played exceptionally well in this contest, methodically building up a lead of 15 points at 65-50, with 6:30 left, before the Raiders suddenly burst into a hot streak which carried them to a 73-73 tie in regulation time. Clifford broke the stalemate early in the extra period with a three-point play, added a field goal for a 78-73 margin, and the Engineers weren't caught a second time. They rattled home 18 points in the five-minute overtime session, nine of them by Clifford. Elizabethtown made a game of it with swiftness and strong shooting while Lehigh countered with even better shooting and a steadier all-around performance utilizing a height advantage. The Engineers led 32-26 in rebounds, eight of them by Brown who was the team leader in that department. E-town rushed to an early 11-4 lead which Lehigh overcame to pull into a 35-35 halftime stalemate chiefly on the shooting of Brown who made 19 points. After the intermission the Engineers gradually took charge, eventually pulling away in the last few minutes. Senior co-captain Paul Brandenburg of Iselin, N.J., the Engineers' starting center, and reserve forward Richie Zajac, a senior from Carteret, N.J., turned in muscular jobs under the boards. There will be sessions each day at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Lance Leonhardt (126), Bob Sloand (142) and Don McCorkel (190) are entered along with Mark Lieberman (177) if the latter's injured knee permits him to compete. Tihamer Toth-Fejel (142), a graduate student serving as an assistant coach this year, also may take part. Midlands officials are limiting Lehigh to a maximum of five entries. Mike Frick, a former NCAA champion for Lehigh and currently an assistant coach at the University of Arizona, plans to compete at 142. He may travel to the tournament with the Lehigh group. Lehigh (4-1) resumes its dual season Jan. 8-11 with a swing into the southland to face East Carolina, North Carolina and North Carolina State. CHARLIE BROWN DON McCORKEL Ike Will Be Feted Eddie Eichelberger, an NCAA wrestling title- winner at Lehigh in 1955 and 1956 and the Engineers' all-time pinning champion, will be honored by the University, and the Alumni Assn., prior to the Lehigh-Iowa State meet Jan. 15 in Grace Hall. He will be feted upon his addition last March to the Citizens Saving (formerly Helms Foundation) wrestling Hall of Fame and his official scroll will be presented at that time. Other Lehigh men in this hall of fame are coaches Billy Sheridan and Gerry Leeman, and referee Johnny Engel. Leeman will present the scroll to Eichelberger, one of the champions he coached at Lehigh, following brief remarks just before the meet against Iowa State begins. Don Sayenga of Bethlehem, Pa., a wrestling historian also admitted to the Hall of Fame last March, also will be honored. There will be a special Hall of Fame dinner on the evening of Jan. 15. Matmen Overtake Cal Poly, Drub Southern III., Tenn. Four Lehigh stars went undefeated and untied last weekend as the Engineers completed a clean sweep of three meets in their eighth annual quadrangular wrestling tournament at Grace Hall. Coach Thad Turner's squad whipped Southern Illinois, 32-10, and Tennessee, 28-12, en route to a confrontation with nationally- ranked Cal Poly. In this meet, an eagerly- awaited high point of the two-day competition, Lehigh stormed back in the late bouts to grab a 17- 16 victory. It was a noteworthy achievement for the Engineers, ranked fifth nationally a year ago, against a strong Mustang squad which was rated No. 6. Lehigh captured the key meet despite the absence of regulars Mike Newbern (158) who's on the sick list, and Mark Lieberman (177) sidelined with a knee injury. Cal Poly warmed up for the battle with easy quadrangular triumphs over Tennessee, 30-8, and Southern Illinois, 39-3. Tennessee eventually outscored Southern Illinois, 19-15, to salvage one triumph while the Salukis returned to Carbondale, HI., with an 0-3 quad record. The four Engineers who led the way during the tournament, each with three victories in three appearances, were 126-pounder Lance Leonhardt of Bethlehem, Pa., 142-pounder Bob Sloand of Landing, N.J., 190-pound freshman Mike Brown of Bethlehem and heavyweight Don McCorkel of Hershey, Pa.
