The Engineers whipped Millersville, 22-35, West Chester, 15-47, and the host ESSC Warriors, 20-43, bringing their season record to eight victories in 10 starts. Pete Heesen of East Stroudsburg, the defending NCAA Div. 11 champion, captured individual honors with a time of 27:20 over a five-mile route under horrible conditions. Hard rain and wind, and slick footing, slowed down all competitors. Stellan Thoren, of Sweden, gave Lehigh the No. 2 berth. Other Engineers in the top eight included Jim Davis (4th) of Maplewood, N.J., Dave Rohr (6th) of Rochester, N.Y., Larry Ullrich (7th) of Muttontown, N.Y., and Chuck Sumrell (8th) of New Bern, N.C. JV Gridders Rout Kutztown Quarterback Jeff Bernstein fired three touchdown passes and halfback Matt Ricketson turned an unsuccessful end sweep into a 64-yard scoring run as Lehigh whipped Kutztown in junior varsity football, 40-19. Bernstein, of Randallstown, Md., threw his TD aerials to split end Bill Penrod of Pittsburgh, Pa., 10 yards; halfback Pete DeLuca of Newark, N.J., 22 yards, and tight end Dave Rarig of Whitehall, Pa., 11 yards. Ricketson, of Liverpool, N.Y., ran for more than 100 yards in about three quarters of action. His 64-yard TD pickup came in the second period as he bounced back from tacklers on a right end run, recovered his balance, reversed field and broke free around the left side of the line. The 210-pound freshman also was impressive during the team's first game Oct. 1, a 15-13 loss at Rutgers. Lehigh, dominant from the start, ran up a 40-3 lead on its hosts before the Golden Bears tallied a pair of late touchdowns against reserves. Coach Joe Sterrett alternated Bernstein, Lou Pierro of Hudson, N.Y., and Rich Andres of Millville, N.J., at quarterback. Andres scored on a 7-yard keeper in the fourth quarter. The other Lehigh TD came as fullback Eric Yaszemski, of Harrison, N.J., plunged four yards into the end zone. Lehigh's JV team (1-1) completes its schedule with three Friday afternoon home games starting Oct. 15. Booters Bow 1-0 At Drexel Lehigh's varsity soccermen tumbled back into their scoring slump last week, battling Rutgers to a 1-1 tie and losing to Drexel, 1-0. Jose Perna tallied against the Scarlet Knights as the teams went double overtime before settling for the draw. Goalie Larry Keller, of Penndel, Pa., gave up the Rutgers goal and was credited with eight saves before leaving with five minutes remaining because of a leg injury. Reserve goalie Jeff Endell, of Deal, N.J., worked against Drexel and had a fine day with eight saves but the lack of Lehigh scoring wasted his effort. Willie Rapp netted the marker for Drexel during a scramble at the mouth of the net in the second half. LEHIGH 100 0—1 Rutgers 0 10 0—1 Lehigh goal: Perna. Assist: Kimber. Rutgers goal: Valesques. It was the first shutout inflicted on the Engineers since 1970 when Drexel did the trick, 6-0, during a collegiate doubleheader at Franklin Field, a span of 64 games. The only points of the rain- splattered defensive battle, played on a muddy gridiron which made for treacherous footing, came at the 14:18 mark of the second period when senior kicking specialist John Horning booted a 44-yard field goal. The kick seemed almost unimportant at the time because , there were few observers who believed three points would win the game, especially after Bucknell had won a 32-25 scoring spree between these same teams one year earlier. Bucknell made the field goal stand up, however, by turning back the biggest chance either team had for a TD in the late moments of the fourth quarter. Lehigh, inconsistent on offense but steady defensively on its own side of the 50-yard line, pulled itself together after linebacker Tom Cassone of Stamford, Conn., recovered a Bison fumble on the Engineer 33-yard line with 6:17 remaining in the game.
