Vol. 17 — No. 24 APRIL 22, 1975 £ BETHLEHEM, PA. Golfers Win 12 of 14 Meets Baseballers (8-11) Rout Two Rivals Shortstop Joe McDonald and outfielder-pitcher Joe Carroll paced Lehigh's baseballers to a pair of routs in the rain last week as the Engineers manhandled Muhlenberg, 19-2, and Upsala, 17- 5, at Taylor Stadium. The triumphs snapped a 5- game losing streak for the Engineers (8-11) who missed a chance at a third victory in the week when a game at Gettysburg last Saturday was canceled because of bad weather. The 5-game dip found the team bowing to Rutgers, 13-5, Temple, 8-7 in 10 innings, Rider, 2-1 and 5- 3, and West Chester, 10-7. Carroll, a sophomore from Arlington, -Varr moved from center field to the pitching mound against Muhlenberg and went the route for his first victory of the season. Paul Hartzell, a senior from Bloomsburg, Pa., hurled the triumph over Upsala, his fourth in six decisions. Taylor Stadium's fences took a beating in the Muhlenberg and Upsala contests as Lehigh collected 43 hits and 36 runs. Carroll and McDonald were the ringleaders. Carroll hit safely nine times in 12 appearances and batted in six runs. He had a homer and eight singles while lifting his seasonal mark to .411. McDonald, a junior from Inkerman, Pa., followed with eight hits in 10 tries including two doubles and a triple, and eight RBIs. He's batting .347. Close behind them in the hit parade were- outfielder Mike Deschler with five hits in nine tries for the week, five RBIs and three homers, boosting his (Continued on Page 2) Women Win 3 In Lacrosse Lehigh's women's lacrosse team made an auspicious debut winning all three of its games in a mini-tournament at Kutztown State. The Engineers beat Lafayette 5-1, Cedar Crest 5-0 and Muhlenberg 4-1. Senior co-captain Judy Manns scored six goals while freshman Lorie Collmann had five and Karen Sam, three. The Engineers made 14 of 18 shots on goal. Goalie Dee Sultzer made four saves and had the best record of any goalie at the tournament. The other co-captain, freshman Jeanne Bonney, also played an outstanding defensive game for coach Barbara Everhart's team. ACTION in Taylor Stadium as Lehigh hammers out 17-5 victory over Upsala. Engineers scored 36 runs on 43 hits in;two-game assault last week in the stadium. Trackmen Shine In N.Y. Relays Mike Green and Sam Scott totaled 46' 6V2" to gain first place in the annual Queens-Iona relays last Saturday at St. John's University, New York City. Despite high winds which made competition difficult the Engineers turned in their finest showing ever in the N.Y. event. Coach John Covert's squad has had only one dual meet since the last issue of The South Mountaineer, winning 75-70 over West Chester. Jesse Kirsch had a big hand in both triumphs, collecting eight assists and a marker against Swarthmore and sending the Gettysburg game into overtime at 9-9 with a goal in the last six seconds. Bruce Crystal produced a goal in the additional time to down the Bullets. It was Lehigh's (2-5) fourth game decided by a single goal, and the first victory.
