Vol. 18 — No. 1 SEPTEMBER 16, 1975 BETHLEHEM, PA. Gridders Win 27-18 In Opener Navy First Soccer Foe Saturday Lehigh soccermen open their season Saturday (Sept. 20) hosting Navy on the Saucon Valley Fields at 2 p.m. This marks the beginning of Tom Fleck's seventh campaign as head coach. In the previous six years he produced four winning seasons and a cumulative record of 45 victories, 32 defeats and four draws. Last year was one of the losers as the Engineers slipped below the .500 mark at 5-7-2 during a disappointing fall in which a rash of injuries helped nullify early- season optimism. Fleck, one of the busiest and successful promoters of soccer in the eastern area, hopes for a better break from the fates this year. He feels he has the material for a representative team if his key man can steer clear of the problems which befell them in 1974. Lehigh plays a strong schedule including among its opponents Navy, Pennsylvania and Hartwick, three teams which usually bid for national ranking, in addition to a tough East Coast Conference slate. LU Women Near Debut The women's athletic program at Lehigh begins another season Thursday (Sept. 18) as coach Helen Bond's field hockey team travels to face Delaware Valley College at 4:15 p.m. Volleyball, the other fall activity, begins Nov. 4 with a match at Centenary College. Barbara Everhart directs this Lehigh squad. These are two of six women's varsity sports. Others are swimming and basketball in the winter, lacrosse and tennis in the spring. In addition there is a varied program of club and intramural athletics. Last year the women compiled a winning 21-19 record and the tennis team (8-0) led all varsity sports at the University.. LARRY HENSHAW, star of Lehigh's victory over Millersville, makes catch and starts dash to end zone. Play covered 70 yards and resulted in the second of three touchdowns he scored. Runners Face Rider, Delaware Friday Lehigh opens its cross country schedule against Delaware and Rider Friday (Sept. 19), at Rider, and the event will enable John Covert to reach the century mark in collegiate coaching ranks. Covert, one of the nation's most respected and successful cross country mentors, will be starting his ninth season with the Engineers and already he has accumulated 84 victories against only 15 defeats. His winning percentage stands at .848 after 99 meets. His record at Lehigh has been phenomenal. His first season (1967) was his worst one and that produced an 8- 3 mark. Succeeding campaigns ended 12-2,10-1,11-1,10-1,10-3, 10- 3 and last year's total of 13-1. In the last six seasons the Engineers have won five IC4A college division team championships and five conference titles. Covert's record is 61-2 against college division rivals, which is Lehigh's bracket, and 23-13 against major schools like Pennsylvania, Manhattan and Army. The Engineer harriers make only one local appearance, hosting a Lehigh invitational cross country meet on the Saucon Valley Fields Oct. 25. All other competition is on the road. South Mt. Distribution The South Mountaineer is being sent to alumni via different classes of mail beginning this fall. The decision, caused by rising costs, was made by the directors of the Alumni Assn. at the spring meeting and announced by Jim Niemeyer, executive director. Tlie Mountaineer will continue to be sent at no charge to alumni, upon a request to the Alumni Office. The standard method of delivery, however, is non-profit (third class) mail. Alumni wishing to receive it via first class mail should remit $4 for 1975-76. The rate for foreign airmail will be $7. Mickey Yardis and Dave Cope paced the Lehigh "A" team to first place in the college division, and fifth place overall, in Sunday's Boardwalk Relays at Atlantic City. Other members of this quartet were Charles Sumrell and Dave Norris. The Phila. Pioneer Club was first followed by three other top athletic club units before Lehigh led the collegians who had 26 teams in the meet. This is a 16-mile grind with each man running four miles. The Pioneers' winning time was one hour, 17 minutes and 47 seconds. The Lehigh "B" team, consisting of Mike Ranney, Dennis Sprick, Dave Friedfeld and Mark Cowell, placed seventh overall. Lehigh's "A" team covered the route in one hour, 22 minutes and 32 seconds. The "B" team did the trick in one hour, 26 minutes and 48 seconds. HOME CLUB HUDDLES Lehigh Home Club is continuing its program of Home Club Huddles following each football game in Taylor Stadium. The huddles are held in Rathbone Hall. Henshaw Scores 3 TDs Against Millersville 11; Sterrett, Gardner Impress Lehigh's rebuilt offensive unit, with five new starters in the line and two in the backfield, came up with an assortment of big plays Saturday as the Engineers opened their football season with a 27-18 triumph over visiting Millersville State. Some 9,500 spectators watched coach Fred Dunlap's squad make its debut with a sixth straight victory, following five in a row to end the 1974 schedule. It was the Engineers' 12th win in their last 15 starts. The team had some opening- game problems both offensively and defensively, but the big- gainers smoothed over a lot of the lumps and proved too much for a determined Marauder squad determined to spring an upset. In the first quarter star fullback Rod Gardner, of Maplewood, N.J., broke through LU—Army Television The Lehigh-Army football game will be featured over WLVT-TV, Channel 39 of Bethlehem, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 21). Greg Pierog's conversion put Lehigh ahead to stay, 7-6. In the second halfback Mark Weaver turned left end for 55 yards, taking the ball to the Marauder 13, and four plays later Weaver rammed two yards to the goal-line only to fumble the ball. Tight end Larry Henshaw, of Hammonton, N. J., grabbed it in mid-air and stepped into the end zone. This was the first of three touchdowns he registered. In the third quarterback Joe Sterrett, of Wallingford, Pa., and Henshaw combined on a touchdown play covering 70 yards. Sterrett passed 35 yards to Henshaw who ran the remaining 35. In the fourth Sterrett sparked a sudden surge with three completions in three tries, for a total of 47 yards, and Gardner had a 29- yard gallop, as Lehigh closed out its scoring with TD No. 4. The tally came on a 15-yard pass, Sterrett to Henshaw. Sterrett, who came off the bench in last year's opener to direct a victory over Hofstra and take attention briefly away from starting quarterback Joe Alleva, had another excellent debut this year. Although shaken up on his first aerial attempt of the day, and taken to the sideline for repairs, he returned after a brief interval (Continued on Page 2) Game At A Glance MILLERSVILLE .6 6 0 6—18 LEHIGH 7 7 7 6—27 M—Daly 16 pass from Lex.
