(Brown and White photo by PETER HAUSER) HALFBACK MARK WEAVER, of Lehigh, stretches to catch go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining Vol. 18 — No. 3 SEPTEMBER 30, 1975 BETHLEHEM, PA. Engineers Overtake Penn In Fourth Quarter, 34-23 An explosive Lehigh team,. refusing to buckle under the weight of frustrating penalties and turnovers, put it all together in the fourth quarter last Saturday to shatter one of the most persistent jinxes in collegiate football. The Engineers whipped Peensylvania, 34-23, coming from behind with three touchdowns in the last seven minutes and 43 seconds to delight a Taylor Stadium turnout of 14,000 spectators. It was Lehigh's first victory over the Quakers since 1889 when touchdowns counted four points, Benjamin Harrison was president, and the Engineers were still three years away from hiring J. A. Harwell of Yale as their first coach. Students ran the football show from 1884, the first season, through 1891. Fred Dunlap, the current mentor, therefore becomes the first full-fledged Lehigh coach ever to walk off the gridiron with a Penn victory under his arm. In the period 1889, through 1974, the Quakers picked on the Engineers for 34 straight triumphs. The only respite for Lehigh was a couple of breaks in the series, from 1907 through 1928 and from 1933 through 1963. Lehigh had come close several times recently but at the final whistle it always was the Penn contingent which rushed to the nearest parties with the most enthusiasm. Engineer rooters were beginning to believe that somewhere, in the agate type of the official book of rules covering football, there was one which made it illegal for Lehigh to beat Penn. Saturday, as the Quakers tried for their 35th in a row at the Engineers' expense, the gremlins worked overtime again to make things difficult for the Brown and White. Dunlap's over-eager forces handicapped themselves repeatedly during the first three quarters with penalties, and for good measure chipped in with two lost fumbles and three pass interceptions, enabling an out played Penn team to build up a 23-13 advantage. Lehigh was winning the battle (Continued on Page 2) Game At A Glance Deserved Victory — Dunlap "This was a big, big victory for our team, and for our football program at Lehigh," says Head Coach Fred Dunlap. "I was particularly proud of the way they came back in that fourth quarter. They kept plugging even after all of those penalties, the fumbles and the interceptions . They just wouldn't quit. "The defense, which hadn't been all we expected it to be against the first two opponents, did a first rate job. "In that last quarter.when we had cut Penn's lead to 27-23 and had a chance to pull it out, we needed the ball again and the defense got it for us. "The offense had trouble with its timing and positioning. Maybe everyone was just a little too anxious. "It was a superb effort on the players' part and they more than deserved to win the game," he concluded. Pennsylvania 7 6 10 0—23 Lehigh 0 13 0 21—34 P—Renfrow 33 run. (Mazzetti kick) L—FG 47 Weaver.
